...Movie Review on Serendipity Walking into this movie I had expected to like it. I am a sucker for clichés. Cliché romantic tropes, and anything that has to do with things of that sort such as fate, and love. Things like 27 dresses, dirty dancing, and the notebook are a few examples of romances I’ve been automatically drawn to because it contained those aspects in it. As a hopeless romantic sap, I can’t turn away from these movies no matter how bad. And they do get bad sometimes they are almost always disappointing. The movies that tend to have these aspects in them tend to be awful, and extremely predictable. But I still fall for it every time. Because what is more heartwarming than a couple brought together by fate when they were separated to never see each other again? Love causing people to crash into each other, over and over again like the waves do when reaching out to the beach sand. That’s Romantic, and I can’t keep my hands off of it. In this movie the two Jonathan Trager (John Cusack), and Sarah Thomas (Kate Beckinsale) meet in a Burlington store looking for gifts for their significant others but when they both go to grab the same pair of gloves they end up face to face with each other. From then on they connect, and a short romantic sequence starts with them at a café called serendipity, and at ice skating bonding, and getting close. Reading a film works in exactly the same way as a written text, or a picture, except that the tools that are used to create meaning are different. We call these tools film language. The opening sequence From the moment we first start watching a film, we begin to get involved. The first few minutes of a film (the opening sequence) are very important to us as they give us lots of clues about the film: 1) what will the film be about (conflicts/themes); 2) who are the most important characters (hero, villain, love interest); 3); what is the setting of the film (time and place); 4) the genre; and finally, 5) what sort of film language characterizes the film? We look at all these elements and begin to put them into context. Based on their environment, how they look, what they say and what we see them do, we make assumptions about the characters, their roles in the film and their relationship to each other. ...Headnote This two-part exploratory study utilized a social cognitive theory framework in documenting gender portrayals in teen movies and investigating the influence of exposure to these images on gender-based beliefs about friendships, social aggression, and roles of women in society. First, a content analysis of gender portrayals in teen movies was conducted, revealing that female characters are more likely to be portrayed as socially aggressive than male characters. Second, college students were surveyed about their teen movie-viewing habits, gender-related beliefs, and attitudes. Findings suggest that viewing teen movies is associated with negative stereotypes about female friendships and gender roles. Research examining the effects of media exposure demonstrates that media consumption has a measurable influence on people's perceptions of the real world, and, regardless of the accuracy of these perceptions, they are used to help guide subsequent attitudes, judgments, and actions. Although on one level the novel is an allegory of the 1917 Russian Revolution, the story is just as applicable to the latest rebellion against dictators around the world. Young people should be able to recognize similarities between the animal leaders and politicians today. The novel also demonstrates how language can be used to control minds. Since teenagers are the target not only of the educational system itself but also of advertising, the music industry, etc., they should be interested in exploring how language can control thought and behavior. Animal Farm is short and contains few words that will hamper the reader’s understanding. The incidents in the novel allow for much interactive learning, providing opportunities for students to dramatize certain portions, to expand on speeches, and to work out alternative endings.
