The Henrietta Marie is the oldest slave ship excavated. It was constructed of wood and held together with iron spikes. The ship was 60 feet long, weighed 120 tons and had a center mast 50 feet tall. Henrietta Marie was a British merchant ship that specialized in the slave trade market. The captain of the vessel was Thomas Chamberlain.
On May 18th 1700, the Henrietta Marie was nearing the coast of Jamaica, carrying over 300 prisoners from Africa. Captain Chamberlain docked Henrietta Marie at Port Royal. Once the prisoners where presented and sold to buyers, captain Thomas Chamberlain grossed over 3000 dollars which in today’s currency is roughly over 400,000 dollars.
