...The Impact of Shift Work on Nurses The Impact of Shift Work on Nurses The purpose of this paper is to discuss nursing shift work and its impact on nursing staff health and family life. The position of the International Council of Nurses is quoted below. It is their position that shift work is detrimental. Position Statement: “The International Council of Nurses (ICN) recognizes that many nursing services must be accessible on a twenty-four basis, making shift work a necessity. At the same time ICN is very concerned that shift work may have a negative impact on an individual’s health, ability to function, immediate support group and the continuity of care, thus affecting the services provided” (ICN, 2007). The impact of shift work on nurses affects productivity at work. Nursing leaders should also encourage work place cultures that respect nurses’ days off and vacation time, promote nurses’ prompt departure and allow nurses to refuse to work overtime without retribution. Traditional eight hour shifts are becoming a thing of the past, twelve hours days and night shift are the norm providing flexibility and a balance family life. Because of unforeseen circumstances such as nurses calling out, change in patients’ condition, short staff on the schedule which was posted two weeks ago, hence the reason twelve hour shift becomes an unplanned longer shift. According to the article in the Journal of Nursing Law, “Compounding the situation nurses work long shifts and often have...

...In the second half of the 19th century, the industrial revolution in America had a huge transformation about politics, society, science, especially technology and economy and achieved a big jump in development of nation. However, it was also a darkness and hardest working condition for workers in factories. Unfair, unhealthy working conditions, child and women labor were main and rifle problems that workers and government try to take many actions to correct. The first is the general situation of Industrial Revolution in America, the beginning of factory system, where workers and machinery together in one place to produce goods. Industrial revolution reached America by 1800s and boomed after the civil war (1861-1865). During the revolution, the United States was transformed from an agricultural to industrial society, from hand and home production to machine and factory. Many inventions were created that revolutionized and helped in forming modern America. They include cotton gin, light bulb, telegraph, sugar evaporation system, steam engine, sewing machine… These inventions have influenced the community by giving it a form of faster production and transportation. Besides, transportation expanded. Many new methods of transportation were arisen such as steamboat, canal, especially railroads. ...Industrialization brought much change to America. It created many jobs and new forms of transportation. It created a wider range of goods and significantly decreased their price. Many positives resulted from the industrial revolution. However, there are negatives in any situation. The negative affects of the industrial revolution outweighed the good. Cities quickly became overcrowded and health concerns quickly came about. Children were forced to work in factories with extreme hours and very unsafe conditions as well as adults. The quality of life quickly took a turn for the worst. One of the most significant effects of industrialization was that it led to urbanization of countries. (Document #6) Citizens in rural areas began to move to cities...

...When someone mentions the Industrial revolution, to many it brings to mind the steam engine, or the railroad, or the industries plant, be it a textile mill, with its great rolling yards of fabric and spinner machines, or maybe the steel mill with iron ore being processed and refined to steel bars, amidst the smoke of the furnaces, and the roaring of bellows. All of these things would be true when considering the Industrial Revolution and the impact that it had on America. What most people do not stop to consider is the role that women had to play in the Revolution so to speak, and the impact that it had on families and their development. The Industrial Revolution was a double edged sword for women in the early 1800’s. It helped to get them...

...a number of other issues that could help VBF efficiency throughout the plant. Analysis We analyzed VBF production using the economic order quantity model (EOQ) for shared facilities and found a lower cost production cycle schedule that we believe will greatly help VBF to be more responsive to customer needs, reduce inventories and working capital, as well as increase efficiency within the plant. We focus on the EOQ model and its implications for the firm. Exhibit 3A shows the spreadsheet calculations we used to arrive at the shared facility economic order quantity that we are recommending. We compiled costs associated with setting up for products and for carrying the required level of inventory. Setup costs were given as $800 per hour and accounted for the loss in contribution due to changeovers. The cost of carrying inventory was represented as a 24% variable cost. It is given that tubing costs $400 per metric ton; therefore, we use $96 ($400/ton*24%) per ton per year as our carrying cost. The cycle schedule arrived at is just over 38 runs per year given the assumptions of costs and the EOQ model (compare this to the approximately nine runs per year currently used). The proposed total inventory cost is $168,206. The current total cost of $377,039 is much greater at nine runs per year. Our calculated inventory cost is only 44.6% of this figure. Recommendations...

...A. In this case the employee has filed a claim alleging constructive discharge due to a work policy change. The company has enforced a new policy which requires the entire production staff to work a rotating shift consisting of four 12-hour, followed by four days off. In this employee’s case would cause him to in some instances work on a holy day. The employee quit after the policy change took effect, he is alleging that the policy is discriminatory. The employee is challenging the rules covered under the religion aspect of the Title VII policy guidance, by claiming “constructive discharge”. A constructive discharge results when “the working conditions are so intolerable that a reasonable person in the employee’s position would feel compelled to resign.” (www.eeoc.gov). Constructive discharge is a relevant legal concept in this case, as the claim is alleging the employee was given no other option but to resign, in order to observe his religious practices. B. The Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title VII was created to protect certain groups of people from employment discrimination. Some of these protected groups include but are not limited to age, disability, race/color, religion and sex. In this case the employee is alleging that the company’s new policy on shift work is discriminatory under his Title VII religious rights, because it would require he work on a holy day. A lot of times, constructive discharge claims occur when an employer does not accommodate a request by...

...Two weeks after graduating high school, I arrived at Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center to begin my first “real job” and experience the most pivotal summer of my life. While most of my friends frolicked on beaches enjoying their last summer before college, my ten hour workdays as a “Summer Staffer” consisted of scrubbing floors, cleaning toilets, preparing meals, cleaning dishes, hauling trash, and busing tables. While these duties yielded an education in how to survive a gritty physical environment, the most vital education I received was in how to survive a gritty social environment. My boss was fired for stealing, a direct co-worker was arrested for murder, and another co-worker stalked me. Various fellow staff members allowed these unexpected circumstances to distract them from their daily responsibilities, but I understood that Shocco guests still demanded our services. Rather than retreat from a back-breaking job amidst criminals, I daily maintained a laser-like focus on getting my job done despite feeling intimidated. Overcoming the intimidation brought forth two lessons that changed my life forever: life will always throw you curve balls and you must adapt to them, and secondly, there is no substitute for hard work. These lessons prepared me for the real world and greatly motivated me to obtain a higher education. Upon graduating from the University of Alabama, I had a unique professional and personal opportunity to move to San Diego. Professionally, I became...

...This internet assignment asks us to look at different neighborhood watch programs found in the United States and compare two of them. After researching quite a few of them I decided to talk about the city of Tucson Arizona neighborhood watch and the LAPD (Los Angeles police department) neighborhood watch program. Before I talk about the two programs, I will first define what a neighborhood watch is. According to our book as well as different internet definitions, it is simply a program of neighbors watching out for each other during the workday, evenings, vacations or any other absence. The purpose of this program is to create an alert neighborhood by using simple crime prevention methods. This program works with the mutual aid of neighbors watching property of neighbors. This had several advantages. First, your neighbors will be familiar with your lifestyle, material possessions, and family members. They will know what type of cars you drive and who belongs, as a rule, at our residence. If a police officer drove by your home, he might not recognize that the person standing in your front yard is a stranger but an alert neighbor will recognize that this person is a stranger. The most important thing to know about these programs is that they do NOT promote vigilantism. You are never asked to put yourself in harm’s way to prevent crime. You are only asked to observe and report suspicious behavior and activities to the police department. The City of Tucson Arizona has a...

...the scenario. Constructive discharge also known as constructive dismissal transpires when an organizations employees resigns because the organization or employer’s actions become increasingly unbearable, atrocious, or has made the employees experience with the organization so trying that the employee has no other choice but to resign and leave the organization. Under the law this type of resignation is not truly voluntary so it is viewed as a termination. The given scenario is relevant to the legal concept of constructive discharge because it paints the picture of an ex-employee who resigned due to a new company policy change that would require employees to work on a religious holy day. The new policy requires all shift-work employees to work 12-hour shifts with four days at work and then four days off. The four required work days can occur on any day of the week, Monday through Sunday. B. Title VII: The candidate provides a logical discussion, with sufficient detail, of a protected category under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that is relevant to the scenario. The law, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 makes it illegal to discriminate against someone on the sole foundation of the person’s particular race, their color, their preference on religion, their national origin, or whether they are male or female. The protected category “Duty to Accommodate an Employees Religion”, under the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is actually relevant to...

...United States Army we are told to live by a set of “warrior Ethos” such as loyalty, respect, and self-less service but many times in our jobs we face ethical dilemmas that require us to not only invoke the Army values but our own personal code of ethics and morals. During my time in the US Army I have had the chance to serve as a recruiter and currently as an Army Reserve career counselor, in both jobs I have had to do some form of recruiting either as a traditional recruiter or by trying to recruit Soldiers in the Inactive Ready Reserve (IRR) to rejoining Troop Program Units (TPU). These jobs are rewarding but highly stressful. As a recruiter I was on a mission usually of having to recruit six people per month as an Active Guard and Reserve (AGR) or Army Reserve Recruiter, this was actually six times the mission of my active duty counterparts and in many occasion I was the only reserve recruiter in my recruiting station. During my time in recruiting there were many rumors about the lack of ethics within the Army Recruiting Command, such as recruiters forging documents, concealing law or medical issues, and even having sexual relationships with potential recruits or their parents to get them to join. This has been a stigma of recruiters for as long as I can remember even when I was recruited in 1987 my parents, teachers and friends all thought recruiter and the term liar was one in the same. Sadly recruiting and recruiters haven’t done much to clear their reputation up too much...
