...I. Introduction A. Real Estate Industry (World & Philippine) Real estate refers to land, as well as any physical property or improvements affixed to the land, including houses, buildings, landscaping, fencing, wells, etc. Vacant land and residential lots, plus the houses, outbuildings, decks, trees sewers and fixtures within the boundaries of the property are examples of real estate. There are a variety of ways to invest in real estate, ranging from real estate investment trusts (REITs) to buying rental property or multi-family housing. For investors turned off by the idea of fixing plumbing and dealing with tenants, REITs offer the opportunity to participate directly in the ownership or financing of real estate projects. REITs are tradable interest (much like a share of stock) in a pool of real estate-related assets. REITs own, and often operate, income-producing real estate such as office buildings, apartments, shopping centers, warehouses and hotels. Many REITs specialize in one property type, such as offices, apartments or regional shopping malls. Most investors buy REITs for their rich dividends, although those dividends are usually fully taxable. Keep in mind, though, that each real estate sector is affected by different economic cycles. Larger, diversified, or geographically dispersed REITs are less exposed to regional weakness and major economic cycles. On the other hand, smaller, more specialized REITs often provide the greatest growth potential. In addition...

Lockheed Martin’s HAA is solar powered, helium-filled airship that will fly above the jet stream. HAA will be very beneficial because it will be used for surveillance purposes, weather observation and mobile telecommunications platforms. The HAA sounds like a very efficient airship, but is it efficient when it comes to the environment or society? Is the airship going to have a positive or negative impact? Is Lockheed Martin making everything legal? Lockheed Martin is a global security and information technology company with 136,000 employees worldwide. ...Final Project ETH/125 October 16, 2013 Final Project • What information about diversity in the United States has helped you better understand or relate to others in ways that you may not have in the past? During this class I found it interesting that I was noticing interracial couples more often. While I do not have a prejudice against this, this class opened my eyes to what is really out in the world. While I am very happy to see this I also know that as long as society chooses to label people and hold stereotypes as truths there will always be more to accomplish with regards to discrimination and prejudice. Learning about diversity also helped me to recognize discrimination and prejudice. It is our diversity that makes the United States such a great county. We need to protect this diversity and fight against discrimination and prejudice. I speak up now because of learning about how this country was founded on diversity. I wish to change the mentality of people as much as I can so they too can understand the diversity of the United States. • Have you learned something new about your own racial, ethnic, or cultural history? While I view myself as an American, I did learn about who I am. I was especially interested in my mother’s ancestry. I had a chance to talk to my mother about this. While much of my Great Grandfather’s history is lost we do know that he was married to a Alkonkin Indian Squaw. My mother an I have decided to do more research on her Grandfather...

...Food System Economic Context of Local Food Production How redevelopment of a local food system meets economic and green jobs goals. The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District reported in spring 2009 that farmers are a key to the local economy. The 2007 Census of Agriculture stated that in Carlton, St. Louis and Douglas counties farming is one of the largest family-owned, small business sectors of the local economy. Farmers in these three counties sold $27.7 million of livestock and crops in 2007. Cattle and dairies are the most important component in our region with $17.3 million of total sales. They reported a potential to increase productivity here. About one third of the farmland in this region was fertilized or had manure applied in 2007, and hay fields averaged about 1.5 tons per acre. Nationwide, more than two thirds of cropland was fertilized (although that includes row crops) and hay fields were about 2.5 tons per acre – even in other parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin, with a similar climate. Farming is one of the bigger sources of income for self-employed business owners in this region. In Carlton County, for example, farmers sold $8 million of produce in 2007. Only self-employed construction firms, with $14 million of sales, and real estate, with $8.2 million in sales, were larger. It’s likely that agriculture in regions like the Northland will be even more important in the future. The United States currently has an abundance of cropland – about 1.4 acres per person...
