Executive Summary
Social media has gain momentum very quickly since its introduction in the early start of the Millennium, before you knew it, it was in the mainstream. Everyday there seems to be some kind of new tool or application (app) connected to social media that is being introduced. People are forming new social networks and the interaction level among people is enormous. One of the main reasons that social media has taken off in the way that it has is because of people and their relationships are at the center.
If you think back to the time before social media existed at all, people would interact with each other in person. They would network at various events and form and maintain relationships in that way. Social media has given people the opportunity to take those relationships and build upon them.
Social networking, popularized by teens sharing information with their friends online on Web sites such as Facebook Inc., is now blooming in the business world, thanks to new social networks that enable professionals and executives in industries such as marketing and finance to rub virtual elbows with anyone and everyone who is connected to them. Targeted advertising has attracted millions of professionals to broad-based networking sites like LinkedIn to swap job details and contact information, often for recruiting purposes. Executives have turned to online social sites, email lists and message boards to sound off on information related to their industries.

...Social Networking and Education: Emerging Research within CSCL Abstract: In this paper I introduce a youth-initiated practice: online social networking that is transforming our society in important ways and has vast implications for learning research and education. I introduce the social and technical features that characterize social networking systems and outline results from emerging research that suggests the social and intellectual practices in which participants naturally engage and how these relate to the competencies increasingly valued in formal education. Next, I discuss one research projects which I am currently pursuing that build on early work and suggest how educational programs might employ such practices to advantage. Finally, I discuss what I see as the educative value of this technology in certain contexts and suggest a course for future research and development. My overall goals are to inform other researchers interested in pursuing similar projects and to stimulate interdisciplinary conversation about where such agendas fit within and advance the aims of CSCL.
