...“Eleanor Rigby” is very different when compared to a normal Beatles song, such as “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” Usually, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and John Lennon played a variety of electric guitars while Ringo Starr played drums. In “Eleanor Rigby”, the entirety of the band is not playing their usual instruments. Starr was not even a part of the song hence the lack of drums. Harrison and Lennon instead sang harmony while McCartney sang as the lead vocalist. Furthermore, with the lack of guitars and drums, the music heard below the vocals was played by a string octet. Usually, a string quartet consists of two violins, one viola, and one cello. However, in this case, the string quartet is doubled, which means 4 violins, two violas, and two cellos, in order to create a more powerful sound. Oddly, “Eleanor Rigby” begins strongly with the chorus. While the cellos are arpeggiating, the violins and violas are playing a series of short, fast notes. While the cellos are sustained, the violins and violas are playing a brief subject that eventually returns to the tonic. At 0:14, the first verse begins with vocals and, again, short notes from the upper strings. From the lower strings, we hear a punctual, driving bass line with an occasional arpeggio. We also hear another brief subject of eighth notes from the upper strings. At 0:31, the first of two bridges begins. The violas are playing eighth notes underneath the vocals while the violins and cellos are sustained. At 0:46, the...

...The novel Siddhartha by Herman Hesse examines the life of Siddhartha, the main character as he goes on a journey searching for Nirvana. Likewise, the poem “Song of Myself” by Walt Whitman also depicts a man’s journey of personal discovery. Whitman begins his poem exclaiming to an unknown listener that is “large and contains multitudes” (Whitman 8). With these words, the poet is saying he is a complex person who is interested about the world. The poet sees the world as exciting and multifaceted. Similar to his vision of the world, the poet’s soul is convoluted and contradictory. Like Whiteman, Siddhartha has a restless soul. For example, “his intellect was not satisfied, his soul was not at peace, his heart was not still” (Hesse 5). Moreover,...

...In the three versions of “Dust My Broom” I noticed that each song had some similarities as differences. The elements that stayed the same was the lyrics, the melody and the accomiment the same chords remained the same. The difference of each song was they both added uniqueness to them by adding or changing the type of instruments. For example in 1939 version of Robert Johnson, he a simple guitar that accomiment the melody, very blues music. However, in 1959, since it was the era of rock n roll, they added drums, which created the song to have more rhythm, also they used an electric guitar. Then in the 2006 pieces, the song sound like a rock song, with electric guitar, keyboard, drums and many more instruments. Comparing to this to the 1939...

...Halimeh Salem 1130428 Laila Shikaki Short Essay Nov. 5 2015 Unity and the Cyclical nature of life Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself” and Mahmoud Darwish’s “To My Mother” and “Rita and the Rifle” explore a sense of unity and cyclical nature of life. Death, life, immortality, unity and oneness are all inner themes of such poems. Mahmoud Darwish, a Palestinian poet, conveys these ideas through the representation of the strength of love whether between mother and son or between a couple. On the other hand, Walt Whitman, an American poet, illustrates these ideas in a different way. He explains them in a broader sense by portraying unity and cyclical nature of life through many things found in Earth and beyond. It is evident that these poems are clear...

In Margaret Atwood’s “Siren Song,” Homer’s portrayal of the Sirens in The Odyssey is critiqued in order to remove the detrimental effects of an androcentric perception. The Odyssey points at an authority in power that men have compared to women. ...Jett Stewart, (Nate) Song Comparison Music Appreciation- 105 The song that I chose to do a comparison of is called Fire. It was originally written, performed, and recorded by Jimi Hendrix in 1967 and is on the first album by his group The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The song is two minutes and 47 seconds of pure Psychedelic rock or acid rock, as some called it. The song originally is in duple meter. It starts off with a lot of drumming on a drum set then afterwards there are the sweet melodic psychedelic sounds of Jimi’s electric guitar and voice. After that, there is a catchy bass guitar groove that comes in during the first chorus and enters in and out while back-up singers sing, “Let me stand next to your fire ”as Jimi sings the whole song and is on lead electric guitar. There are crescendos that lead up to Jimi’s awesome guitar solos throughout the whole song. The mood of the song is happy. The bass line is legato and the lead guitar part is staccato. The song for the most part is homophonic and has parts that sound polyphonic because he is singing while playing lead guitar. The band that made a cover of Fire is an awesome band called Red Hot Chili Peppers. They are an alternative and influential funk rock group that was made Los Angeles, California in 1983. They covered the song on their fourth album called Mother’s Milk, which was released on August 16th in 1989. Their version of Fire sounds the same except they took it from moderato to allegro and had more accelerandos...

...should be included in the Introduction to Literature. Music has continuously been changing ever since the first beat was tapped, the first piano was struck, the first violin was plucked, and the first horn was blown; however, in the last 150 years, the meaning of lyrics and the style of music has changed drastically. From Bing Crosby to Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Eminem, the artists and composers have altered the way music sounds on the radio, computer, and other musical devices. Every genre has artists, who have songs, which have lyrics that contain a story. Whether the story is from a memory, a dream, or an ambition, it becomes clear when it is being heard by billions of people. Music has become a basis for artists to exert their most inner emotions and thoughts into lyrics that others can relate to, live by, and act upon, as well as a means to degrade women in an approach that people don’t realize until the lyrics are sought out, the song is heard an abundance of times, or the video is seen. This proposed...

...Jazz Appreciation Aaron Wolf 12/1/10 The Comparison of Two Jazz Concerts Jazz Appreciation class presented me with the opportunity to attend two, unique jazz concerts that differentiated in various aspects. I had the pleasure of listening to The Jameson Sanagin Aaron Wolf Duo and The Cuesta Night Band one night after the other. The differences between these concerts could not have been greater and while I closely observed the performers, their music, the venue and the audience, I found few commonalities between the two. Each was very intriguing to listen to, and the large range of differences between the concerts made it easy and interesting to compare and contrast them. Upon my arrival at these concerts, my attention was instantly drawn to observing the venues and the audiences. I first went to listen to The Jameson Sanagin Aaron Wolf Duo perform at the Steynberg Gallery, which is a café that contains a small room displaying many beautiful art pieces on the walls. The concert took place in this room and had a very relaxed, intimate vibe because of the size of the venue and the audience (about thirty people). This aspect of the concert contrasted with The Cuesta Night band’s performance the following night, which took place at Cuesta’s large auditorium. This venue attracted about seventy people who created a louder atmosphere because of the applause, shouts and whistles from many individuals. The high ceilings...

...Woman is Fickle: A Modern Comparison By Jonathon Davis Dr. Michael J. Pendowski Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama November 13th, 2010 Verdi’s “La donna è mobile,” translated into “Woman is fickle”, puts onto display many popular key musical elements of the 19th century that are still very much alive in today’s modern music. Giuseppe Verdi utilizes several trends in music of the day to create the masterpiece that we still recognize today, despite the immense time gap. The piece is written about a woman whose mind constantly changes direction and leaves her admirers constantly pursuing in vain. Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) was an Italian world class composer of operas during the height of the Romantic period. This piece is widely considered his most notable work, but considering all of his great operas still performed to this day, to place anything as his “most notable” would be an understatement. His career took off with Nabucco, which he wrote after the death of his children and wife, and was able to write masterpiece after masterpiece, even into his twilight years. Verdi died with twenty-eight operas on his resume, many of which are still performed today. Most of Verdi’s inspiration came from the works of Shakespeare, with the opera Macbeth as an example. Verdi also incorporated political messages into his operas, as Italy was leaving Austrian Hapsburg rule at the time. A chorus of Nabucco is still considered an Italian patriotic theme. The opera that this piece...

...Rap Culture in Comparison to the Tone of Hughes and Brooks Today it is hard to get into a car and turn on the radio without hearing a song about money, sex, or fame. Modern day rap culture tries to force those three things on our population through their music and lyrics. They have changed many people’s perception of the perfect life through their tone, music, and lyrics. Many poems help express and can relate to the tone of the modern day rap culture. The tone in the poems, “Red Silk Stockings” by Langston Hughes, and “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks, can be tied to the tone in rap culture and express many modern American values. Rap culture in the twenty first century has exponentially grown and in turn has influenced daily American live. Today, everyone is exposed to this new rap culture that is developing everywhere. Rap culture started in about the 1970’s in New York City (Sullivan). In those days rap was about everyday life and race but has greatly change since then. Rap songs these days are all about sex, money, drugs, women, cars, and practically any material thing. Many songs talk about how rich the rappers are and the extravagant ways they live. Most songs in rap culture have poor grammar and language. These songs are crude and talk about women only as sex. The view points of modern day rappers are extremely clouded because of what they talk about and how they live. The tone of the Hughes and Brooks poems help to show the tone and expression of modern day rap culture...

...Dallas Williams October 26, 2011 Love Songs Dr. Christina Fuhrmann When comparing the two different versions of this song and trying to choose one, there is definitely no wrong answer. Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald both did a wonderful job in their own right on “Love is here to Stay”. Unfortunately there is only one first dance at a wedding so in this case they can’t play both. Even though Sinatra and Fitzgerald are two very different singing styles, I think there were many similarities to the approach each singer took in singing this song. But, in this situation there were more differences than not. More differences in the two songs make it harder to pick one song to use. In Love is here to stay, the lyrics are a dead giveaway towards the attitude of love in this song. In this short song, the lyrics are describing how long love will last. Therefore the composer compared love to material things that will only be phases. Saying, this love will outlast all of those items. When comparing the two singer’s attitudes towards these lyrics while singing, I think Ella Fitzgerald did a better job of conveying with her voice the true meaning of these lyrics. As Ella Fitzgerald sang the song I could get a sense of lasting love by the tone in her voice. Her tone is somewhat laid back and she elongates words, maybe as a metaphor to show how this love is long lasting. As opposed to the approach Frank Sinatra had taken, Sinatra was to the point and had more of a reassuring...
