Description of the Strategy

The “Use of Onset and Meaning to Figure Out a Word” is a strategy that helps children work through unknown words and solve letter-sound problems they encounter, and also serves as pathways for applying phonics knowledge (Karin L. Dahl, Patricia L. Scharer. Lora L. Lawson, and Patricia R. Grogan, 2000). When a word must be figured out because it is not recognized by sight is called Word Analysis. It can also be called phonics or decoding. Phonics or decoding is using alphabet letters and their sounds to figure out unknown words, and it is a major way to figure out words that are not recognized at sight (Gerald G. Duffy, 2014). This is the reading component that the strategy mostly addresses at the time it is implemented. …show more content…
Olson and Treiman (1990) have stated that children are more successful at decoding words divided on the onset-rime border than any other division. So "str...and" is easier to link and decode than "stra...nd". Bryant and Bradley (1983, 1985) support the idea that teaching children to attend to onset and rime will have a positive effect on their literacy skills. Examples of those prompts that Karin L Dahl, Patricia L. Scharer, Lora L. Laswon, and Patricia R. Grogan (2000) state are; “1. Look at the first letters. How does that word start? Get your mouth ready to make that sound. 2. Look at the way the word begins. Now look at the picture. What word would make sense here?” Furthermore, they should use other games that will enhance the use of the strategy. Karen Tankersley (2003) gives a list of fun games that struggling readers can play with during the implementation of the “Use of Onset and Meaning to Figure Out a Word” strategy. Flashcards with letters that commonly appear, Letter Bingo, Word maker, Hangman, Word Hopscotch, Word Tic Tac Toe, Detective Team, Go Fish, Word Ladders, Magnetic Board, Word List, and Missing Letter. All these games can be modified to fit the needs of each child in the decoding and making meaning of unknown words. An example how to modify the “Hangman” game would be to give either the initial letters or the rime to figure out a word. By giving either of these, children will decode the unknown word. One other activity that Erickson, K. and Koppenhaver, D. (2007) say that can be useful for figuring out unknown words using onsets and rime is Guess the Covered Word.
