How to teach machines to read and use the web Benoit Dherin, Director, Keep.com

Last Friday, I listened a speech outside of class. It is Benoit Dherin who is the director of Keep.com and Computer Science. His speech focused appropriately on the issue of applying machine learning for web-content extraction to online retail business. This speech is on May1st,2015,12:30pm, Downtown Campus, Room529. My analysis will focus on how Dherin used the strategies of story-telling, intonation, articulation, pauses, quotation and redundancy to engage and maintain his audience’s interest as well as evoke their sympathy. Utilizing showing the actual action of online retailers during a speech, his introduction captured the audience’s attention; the body of his speech discuss how machine learning can be used to bridge the gap between retailers and web users in an automated way and his conclusion summarized the challenges and solutions involved in teaching machines to explore, mine, and map data on the web.
Director Dherin opened his speech showing the we that contains a multitude of supply and demand. Through showing the audience what the web is like, his aim was directly telling the audience that on the supply side are online retailers, providing product inventories and advertising deals and discounts. Moreover, on the demand side are individual consumers, who clearly express desires, values, preferences, and more via blog, social media and various apps. The number of audience is not too much, so it is much convenient for Dherin to make interaction with the audience. He was in a most humble clear tone, loud enough to be audibly heard. His evidence used was relevant and timely. Before he showed his thesis statement which is how to teach machines to read and use the web, he paused for effect and used short simple sentences in his introduction part to allow his audience to visualize and grasp without ambiguity. When he finally told his statement, with direct eye-contact, Director Dherin successfully attracted the audience’s attention about this topic about computer science issues.
To achieve a warm reception, he assessed his audience and appropriately referenced the mind is a very unusual piece of software, and the best way to understand how a piece of software works. Director Dherin shows his point of view that computers are flexible enough to model the strange evolved convolutions of our thought, and yet responsive only to precise instructions. So if the endeavor succeeds, it will be a double victory which Dherin stated his statement during the speech that human being would finally come to know the exact mechanics of themselves—and they’ll have made intelligent machines. Director Dherin paused appropriately so that the audience had time to think about his topic and his statement showing during the speech.
As the speech moved from the introduction, through the body and onto the conclusion with good verbal transitions, he used an appropriate quotation, “The father of psychology, William James, described this in 1890 as “the most mysterious thing in the world”: How could consciousness be physical? How could a few pounds of gray gelatin give rise to our very thoughts and selves?”, to demonstrate the challenges they face nowadays about teaching machines to read and use the web on the supply and demand side. This is the appeal of pathos he used in the speech. He introduced his process he had made recent years about the development of computer translation ability. He used data and statistics to show his main research areas such as mathematical physics, differential geometry, and quantum physics that he worked on about this topic to show the changes. The statistics and data are the most obvious part of logos. Logos appealed ethically and totally support his main idea.
He closed his speech after telling the audience that the problems and solutions he was working on. The solutions he mentioned in the speech concludes teaching machines to explore, mine and map data on the web. As we all know, machine learning is a branch of computer science that enables computers to learn from experience and billions of data and statistics to support the development of this technology. Director Dherin made his conclusion that he was still working on figuring out how to teach machines to read and use the web as same as human beings. He believes in the future, the problems will be solved. From my point of view, the conclusion part of this speech may be ended too soon. The audience may have less connection from what he is saying at the end part. Maybe because of too many academic statistics used in the speech causes me understand a little bit hard. Overall, the speech about How to teach machines to read and use the web by Benoit Dherin, Director, Keep.com let me learn a lot about speech skills and how to not only make connection with the audience, but also show the main points and thesis statement at the introduction and conclusion part.

Delivery Analysis of Any Given Sunday Speech

...In the climax of the movie Any Given Sunday, Coach Tony D’Amato (portrayed by Al Pacino) gives a riveting speech right before his team takes the field for their biggest football game of the year. The coach delivers the speech to his players as they all watch on one knee, eager to take the field. We, the television audience, watch from a distance, through cameras that pan around the room and give us the feeling of being part of the team as well. We also get the added effect of music that speeds up and slows down as the pace of the speech alters. The different shots of players and their reactions to the speech also help to subconsciously alter the way we feel. If we see a player with his head down in tears, we will feel pity. However, the use of different cameras to show the rising confidence throughout the locker room gets us, the audience, on board with the coaches message and we sometimes are even ready to take the field with the team. These effects dramatically enhance the impact the speech has on us viewers, and is an added dimension that cannot be created through live speaking. Coach D’Amato’s physical appearance parallels his message even before he starts to speak. His messy hair and open shirt with glasses hanging down portray a sense of tenacity and an obvious chip on the coach’s shoulder. He grasps his coaching papers in his hands, shuffling them, pacing around the room. His mannerisms show anxiety, nervousness; he is truly speaking unscripted and from the...

In the beginning, Medcalf announced the purpose of his speech: to inform the audience that we should not allow our identities to get wrapped up in what we do, but in whom we are. The audience on the day of the speech was comprised mostly of University of the Pacific student-athletes, but there were also some coaches and younger athletes from the Stockton community....

Rhetorical Analysis Of Susan B. Anthony's Speech

...Susan B. Anthony’s speech “On Women’s Right To Suffrage” and Pericles’ Funeral Oration both used rhetorical appeals effectively, evidenced by the number of people studying the pieces of writing. Furthermore, the literature pieces in question both talk about a social matter; Anthony is talking about social justice and the funeral Oration talks about democracy. Despite bearing some superficial differences, the similarities between Anthony’s speech and Pericles’ Funeral Oration regarding rhetorical appeals are remarkable. Both speeches were able to vocalize their points effectively because they used social values like justice and adoration that showed extremely powerful pathos forming a solid argument. In Anthony’s speech, for example, she says...

Student Hate Speech Analysis

...familiar with the hate preacher, he stands in the mall area and condemning people to hell. The First Amendment protects the preacher allowing him the freedom of speech. He only shows up to campus about once a month and students stand around amused by his yelling and ranting until they grow bored and walk away. But imagine if instead this was a daily occurrence and its multiple people verbally harassing an individual based on nothing more than their race, gender, or sexual preference; three factors about a person that cannot be changed. Charles R. Lawrence III appropriately calls for regulation on racist speech, as it is becoming a serious issue on college campuses and its effects on victims. One recent incident of racist speech happened in March of this year at Oklahoma University. A posting of a video of one of the university fraternities, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, showing the fraternity on a bus chanting racial slurs targeting blacks. The song included lynching and that the allowance of blacks in the fraternity’s chapter would never happen. The University President...

Rhetorical Analysis of Bono's Commencement Speech

...Bono Rhetorical Essay Rock Star and AIDS activist, Bono, in his commencement speech to the ’04 class of UPENN (entitled “Because We Can, We Must”) explains that since we are able to, we should find a cause and fight for it. Bono’s sole purpose is to inspire the UPENN graduates to make a difference in this world.. He adopts an informal tone in order to connect with and motivate his primary audience, the graduates, and to engage his secondary audience, the family (parents, grandparents, etc.) of the graduates. Bono begins his speech by explaining why he is at UPENN giving this speech and by sharing a personal anecdote (a pattern that is seen throughout his speech). His first sentence is a simple, declarative statement, “My name is Bono, and I am a rock star.” He opens with this kind of sentence to not only catch the attention of the audience, but to also establish his informal tone which is continued throughout the entire speech. His use of first person also makes the essay in entirety more relatable. While contemplating why someone like him was being honored with the title Doctor of Law and allowed to give a speech, Bono compares the situation to “[a] King Charles spaniels in little tartan sweats and hats” claiming “it’s not natural.” This self-deprecating statement is effective in establishing an informal tone because it sets Bono up to be seen as equal, to anyone sitting in there listening to him. He goes on to share a story about how he came to realize his passion...

Steve Jobs 2005 Stanford Commencement Speech Analysis Essay

...Steve Jobs 2005 Stanford Commencement Speech Analysis Essay In his speech, Jobs explores the crucial role of failure in finding success, specifically in the situations when he shows that it takes hard work, deliberate practice, and the ability to learn from failure and to persevere. The first point that Jobs makes, is that to be successful, you have to work hard. During the commencement speech, Jobs shares that, “If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do,” (7). Though Jobs admits to having dropped out of the class he was originally attending and ‘dropping in’ on a new one the decision he made was one that, in the long run, furthered his career. By making the decision, and putting in the work to go through the calligraphy class, Jobs ended up creating the future of typefaces on the personal computer. By putting himself and his career on the line, Jobs tells the Stanford graduating class of 2005, “Again, you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future,” (8). Jobs let his actions decide his fate for his career, and at the time, he didn’t know that the decisions he was making would land him where it did. It took years of hard work for him to get to where he ended up, at the top of an internationally known company. Jobs later went on to say, “We worked...

...Nothing will relax you more than to know you have properly prepared. The stage fright or speech anxiety felt by many speakers is due to not knowing enough about the speaking environment or the audience. The more you know about your speaking environment and your audience, the more relaxed you will be when delivering your speech. Many speakers, however, often overlook the need to include any kind of audience analysis as part of their speech preparation. Proper audience analysis will assure that you give the right speech to the right audience. Most professional speakers send their clients a multi-page questionnaire in order to gather enough information about them and the speaking event to properly customize their speeches. Using the word "A-U-D-I-E-N-C-E" as an acronym, I have defined some general audience analysis categories that these surveys should include. A nalysis - Who are they? How many will be there? U nderstanding - What is their knowledge of the subject? D emographics - What is their age, sex, educational background? I nterest - Why are they there? Who asked them to be there? E nvironment - Where will I stand? Can they all see & hear me? N eeds - What are their needs? What are your needs as the speaker? C ustomized - What specific needs do you need to address? E xpectations - What do they expect to learn or hear from you? Develop specific questions which fit into each of these eight categories and ask the client or audience to tell you what they...
