...Good Student Dr. Grogan Literary Methodology 17 February 2012 Mistaking Awkwardness for Arrogance: A Reexamination of Gabriel in James Joyce’s “The Dead” A figure as complex and multifaceted as the rich narrative from which he is taken, Gabriel Conroy has long interested readers seeking meaning in James Joyce’s “The Dead.” Initially regarded as “a painfully ordinary man” by Melissa Free, subsequent critics have more harshly accused Gabriel of arrogance and classism, based on his “Three Encounters” with the characters Lily, Molly Ivors, and Gretta (280, 283). However, though many sound arguments can be made in support of Gabriel’s arrogance, one might see this position as a failure to recognize two important factors: First, the nervous insecurity with which he often conducts himself, and second, the disparity between his inner thoughts and outer actions. Indeed, an ethical examination of the story’s “Three Encounters” reveals a highly self-conscious, socially clumsy Gabriel, whose sometimes-condescending thoughts rarely manifest in intentionally hostile behavior. One can first see this display of self-consciousness when examining Gabriel’s discourse with the character Lily, the first in the series of encounters by which he is often judged. For those critics who interpret Gabriel negatively, this might seem a reasonable place to start, for his amusement with the girl’s low accent – “[smiling] at the three syllables she had given his surname,” – is a clear indication that Gabriel...

Technology and Communication

...Technology and Communications Amanda Rogacki COM 295 July 6, 2015 George DeMetropolis Technology and Communications There are many different media platforms that can be used in a business environment. Each scenario below required a different form of technology or media to communicate the given message. In the first scenario, an employee’s computer is infected with a virus and you need to contact technical support to fix the problem. I believe that a phone call to the technical support team informing them of the issue is the best choice. When a virus is detected it is best that it be dealt with quickly before it can spread to others on the network. After they have been notified depending on the company they can send someone to fix it, take the computer, or remotely access it to remove the virus. One of my team mates had some good points about bad news being best delivered in person. While I agree with that I do not think it applies here. This is not someone losing a job or not getting the raises they were promised. In this situation it is simply a problem that needs to be solved quickly. Some companies do not have a technical support team in the office and must call them in. If that was the case a face to face would not be possible. Even though I agree with his point about bad news I do not feel it meets the criteria here. In the second scenario, the Human resources department needs to inform all the employees of the changes in the health plan. We also...

James Joyce Research Paper

...English 12 12 December 2011 Paper Assignment #6 James Joyce Strangled by Spiritual Paralysis Stanislaus Joyce once wrote “Ireland [is] a country which has seen revolutions in every generation” (Joyce 510). But what happens when these revolutions seem to come to an end? The Irish defeated British to become an independent nation of devout Catholics. They worked harder than those beside them to keep their families out of poverty, when Ireland became over populated as a result of the Napoleonic Wars. They suffered through the Great Potato Famine, losing many loved ones in the process. The country struggled to recover after each of these tragedies, but with their triumphs brought improvement. Through their devotion to Catholicism, their loyalty to Ireland and their hard work for their family, they survived, but they settled into an unchanging society engulfed by a form of spiritual paralysis as author James Joyce identifies in his writings. Many literary critics have taken an interest in his writings because of the underlying theme of spiritual paralysis in Dublin. Joyce’s brother, Stanislaus wrote “James Joyce: A Memoir”, in effort to defend and explain Joyce’s motivation for using Dublin as the heart of his writing. He describes Joyce as an independent person, often excited by multiple “enthusiasms”, which he was quick to share with the world (Joyce 488). Joyce was not afraid to criticize his homeland if he felt it would bring improvement, which can be seen in his impulsive...

Critical Thinking

...ABSTRACT: This report explores critical discourse analysis as a theory in rhetoric discourse and speech act and pragmatics. The framework of analysis includes the mixture of my own ideas and theory of various experts such and Aristotle, Tuan Van Dijk, H.P Grice and Robert Dilts. As critical discourse analysis is a very flexible term of social linguistic study and it allows one to go with the own ideas, here I have chosen suitable analytical tool of experts to analyze the two different discourse, one is verbal discourse ( Tryst with Destiny) and second is written discourse ( Toyoda’s statement 2013) and at the end comparison of both discourse. Key words: critical discourse analysis, rhetoric discourse, speech act, pragmatics, social linguistic, tryst with destiny, Toyoda’s statement 2013. INTRODUCTION Critical discourse analysis (CDA) comprises three inter-related processes of analysis which are linked up with three inter-related dimensions of discourse. Three inter-related process of analysis. 1) Text analysis (description) 2) Processing analysis ( interpretation) 3) Social analysis ( explanation) Three inter-related dimensions of CDA. 1) Discourse structure (systematically and explicitly described structure at all level) 2) Social structure (in the context of society) 3) Cognitive structure ( mental cognitive interface) The three dimensions of CDA is coherently related with each other to make up a substantial discourse where mental cognitive...

Obama Rhetorical Analysis

...October 01, 2011 Remarks by the President at the Human Rights Campaign's Annual National Dinner Washington Convention Center Washington, D.C. 7:26 P.M. EDT THE PRESIDENT: Thank you so much. It is great to be back. (Applause.) I see a lot of friends in the house. I appreciate the chance to join you tonight. I also took a trip out to California last week, where I held some productive bilateral talks with your leader, Lady Gaga. (Laughter.) She was wearing 16-inch heels. (Laughter.) She was eight feet tall. (Laughter.) It was a little intimidating. Now, I don’t want to give a long speech. Cyndi Lauper is in the house. I can’t compete with that. (Applause.) But I wanted to come here tonight, first of all, to personally thank Joe for his outstanding years of leadership at HRC. (Applause.) What he has accomplished at the helm of this organization has been remarkable, and I want to thank all of you for the support that you’ve shown this organization and for your commitment to a simple idea: Every single American -- gay, straight, lesbian, bisexual, transgender -- every single American deserves to be treated equally in the eyes of the law and in the eyes of our society. It’s a pretty simple proposition. (Applause.) Now, I don’t have to tell you that we have a ways to go in that struggle. I don’t have to tell you how many are still denied their basic rights -- Americans who are still made to feel like second-class citizens, who have to live a lie to keep their jobs, or who are...

Personal Narrative: My Experience In Middle School

...were at camp a snake came outside of the boys cabin. The girls were yelling at us through window, telling us not open the door. We couldn't hear them so we opened the door, then when we saw the snake we all ran to our beds. Sixth grade was the first year we could get on the honor roll, so I was really excited the first time I got on the honor roll. I tried to join the speech team with my friend Ben that year, but we couldn't memorize our lines, so we just gave up. I was really excited for my first day of seventh grade. Mrs. Sextro was my homeroom teacher. I heard Mrs. Lightner was really fun, so I was excited to have her as one of my teachers. I really enjoyed watching the new sixth grade get lost in the hallways, it reminded me of what I had to go through when I was in sixth grade. We took lots of cool field trips in seventh grade. We got to go to Trinity Catholic high school and experience what it was like to be a high school student for a day. We got the opportunity to have mass and get a tour of the old St. Louis Cathedral. My favorite field trip was to finance park. We were given a life scenario and an annual income. We had to buy the necessary items to live, and pay off all our bills. At the end we have to figure out a way to stay out of debt. I really liked my field day team. Seventh grade was my first year winning first place on field day. My team worked really hard. On April fools day I decided to hide people's book bags outside in the hallway, it was hilarious. I made...

Think about it, if Trump gets irritated by Democrats's sub-tweeting him, do you really think he's the right man to be in the situation room? McGillians it has come to the extent where POTUS & FLOTUS are spending their last couple of months in office making sure Trump does not get elected. Further, Melania Trump made a great first impression at the Republican Convention, blatantly plagiarized Michelle Obama's speech. We can all understand that Melania might be low-key horrified of English, but maybe if Trump stopped being delusional and a racist, he could pay for English courses (tax free). You could be the judge yourself.. mel Exactly, how can America trust the prospective First Lady when she plagiarizes from the current FLOTUS? Throughout the entire presidential debate Trump looked defeated, he couldn't answer the most simple questions, and if he did answer them it wasn't in the political form. One of the questions that was asked during the debate was "How will you bring more jobs", Trump responded just by saying "We gotta bring all the companies back here". It does not take a genius to answer that, but Trump showed no ground that he could execute...

Project Service Learning

...Service Learning is the cornerstone class that links academic studies at the College of Muscogee Nation (CMN) with the student and the communities. Each will strengthen the other as we learn to use cultural and historical facts and traditions to face social problems, meet human needs, promote civic responsibility and provide a basis for future citizen support. My service project is using volunteerism to improve the quality of life for the children in the Okmulgee area by applying the Muscogee traditions and culture taught to us through the curriculum of College of Muscogee Nation and our ancestors. The first goal of this service learning project is to improve the quality of life for the children of the low-income Okmulgee community residents. A historical assessment of the Okmulgee area provides a picture of drastic change and a people trying to make genuine progress in face of pressure beyond their control. This area, like the United States, has experienced drastic changes in the last fifty years including loss of manufacturing plants such as the Peanut Plant, Phillips 66 Refinery, Americana Window Glass, Ingersoll-Rand, and Ball Brothers Glass. The 2013 U.S. Census Bureau lists the population of Okmulgee as 12, 373 with 25.5% below poverty level. The per capita income for the 12 months (in 2013 dollars) is 16, 981 compared to the national per capita of $24,208. According to Oklahoma Unemployment records the unemployment rate in Okmulgee County, Oklahoma was 4.1% in April...

How Peaceful Is China’s Peaceful Rise?

...HOW PEACEFUL IS CHINA’S PEACEFUL RISE? 16 July 2014 at 17:01 HOW PEACEFUL IS CHINA’S PEACEFUL RISE? The People’s Republic of China has been taking great pains to point out to its neighbours specifically, and the world in general, that they have nothing to fear of its increasing power. This approach is epitomised by China’s emphasis on the term ‘peaceful rise’ to describe its expanding influence since 2004. Not only is ‘peaceful rise’ used to allay concerns that China will use its power to further its goals at the expense of other nations, it is also used to directly contrast the PRC with the United States who have been embroiled in the same period in the controversial War on Terror. Given the prominence of the claim of the claim it is clearly in the interests of understanding international and regional developments that we pose the question “How peaceful is China’s peaceful rise?” As this essay will show, in light of the PRC’s domestic aims and because of China’s historical and cultural experiences, any attempt to answer question is contradictory, and depends on the region. The question of China’s contradictory peaceful rise is explained most completely by the theory of neoclassical realism. Neoclassical realism argues that it is the aim of states to gain power to pursue what they deem is in their national interests. It breaks down the state’s efforts in that respect into two spheres, the internal and the external. The external sphere is similar to other theories of...

When I took a trip to Britain, I thought people would speak with a “British accent.” I didn’t realize that there are many different accents and the differences are not just pronunciation, but also vocabulary. In order to get my message across, I learned to avoid using slang words as much as I could. I didn’t realize how much American slang I use in my everyday speech! Despite the many different ways of speaking English across the UK, I felt the way that I speak English made me stick out as an American.
