...These are definitely games that people like to spectate that we call sports. One of my favorite sports was just broadcast on ESPN2, had a world-wide $10 million dollar tournament where the winners took home $5 million dollars. The players of this sport all did this without leaving their seat. I’m referring to electronic sports, or esports. I’m not just talking about playing a golf, basketball, or tennis game on the Wii. What I do mean is that there are video games out there that take all the main components of traditional sports: communication, training, and teamwork, and make them into their video game. People are playing sports without ever leaving their seat. Ladies and gentlemen, Welcome once again to Digital Sports! (Stanley Parable announcer saying this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRloyLtJ6r0) Let’s talk about the three things you will need to be able to play digital sports effectively: communication, training, and teamwork. Communication in esports is one of the most crucial skill areas. Think about all the things you rely on when playing a traditional sport--body language, hand signals, eye contact, speaking to each other. All of these thing are pretty much removed from esports. Now, it is a little different if you play professionally and you are communicating in one room--but if you are playing with friends online and they don’t have microphones, you’re out of luck. Because of this, communication is the most valued and highly underused skills a esport player can...

...The authors argue that much of the violence in sport today involves overconformity to the norms of the sport ethic. This contradicts arguments stating that commercialization and the media are the main causes of violence in sports today. Which side do you agree with and why? Although the media contributes to instigating violence, it is not the main cause of violence in sports today for several reasons. Firstly, Athletes use media to promote themselves. Due to television being the main way of communication, people use it as a way to become famous. They want to show their abilities to the public in order to gain recognition and acceptances of fans and other athletes. I believe that overconformity of violence is some of the way that athletes increase their popularity, so that they can become legends on and off the field. One of the reason that society attribute good values to athletes who do that. “He is courageous, he sacrifices himself for the team, he plays with injuries, He tackles like a man”, are some of the comments from the public who created that image of sports. In addition, athletes are benefited if they follow that conception. Because of the media coverage, they will be contracted by great sport clubs, and they will be recognized as a true professional player. The society already gave meaning to sports, so the media transmits and shows what people want to see. Secondly, part of the violence is attributed to some gender ideology. Nowadays, a great part of the population...

...ABSTRACT Sport events are increasingly reliant on episodic volunteers for the successful delivery of an event. As there continues to exist a surge in the organization of sporting events coupled with the demand for volunteers, event organizers must concern themselves with utilizing the appropriate recruitment and retention strategies. In an effort to do this, one must understand the points of satisfaction for volunteers as well as factors influencing their future intentions to volunteer. While there exists a plethora of research to understand the motivation of volunteers, exploring the antecedents of volunteer satisfaction as well as intent to remain has been limited. This study investigates the factors influencing volunteer satisfaction as well as intentions to remain as a volunteer for future sporting events from an elite men’s golf event on the Professional Golf Association (PGA) circuit. Results indicated that overall volunteers were satisfied with their experience and willing to return yet were concerned with the level of communication between the organization and volunteers. The present study also found that longevity of service influenced volunteer satisfaction. A MANOVA revealed significant differences between first time and returning volunteers in their intent to continue volunteering for both sport events and community causes. The findings have implications to not only expand the theoretical understanding of sport volunteerism, but acknowledge the factors that sport event...

...semi-structured interviews, and an open-ended exploratory interview, I deduced the main themes that were relevant among audience members at a Flagler College men’s soccer game. Background Information The sport of soccer began with the Han Dynasty, over 2,000 years ago; since then, soccer has grown into a worldwide sport that draws millions of fans to spectate games (FIFA 1994). The sport of soccer was first recognized on the national level in England in 1863. The birth of England’s Football Association was the first time the sport of soccer had a governing body. The presence of a governing body marked the end of rules and regulatory technicalities of the game varying by nations. As soccer got more popular, the game started drawing a larger audience and media recognition. In 2014, the FIFA World Cup drew a total audience of 3.2 billion people (including online viewers); the sheer number of soccer fans is in part due to the ability of the sport to maintain the balance between unity and conflict (FIFA 2015 & Dolan and Connolly 2016). Spectators are drawn to sports such as soccer because of an innate desire for group identity and solidarity; particularly, sports act as the balance beam between unity and conflict during times of war. Unity and conflict are interpersonal, sports reach across physical or social border to unify members in the ultimate aim of beating out the other team, and, in the process, subduing conflicts so that competition can take place. In Afghanistan for example...

...care if a kid is a multi-sport kid. In fact I think it’s a benefit.” - Tom Hilbert, volleyball coach for the Colorado State University. More and more, parents of athletes are encouraging their kids to specialize in sports. Sport specialization is when an athlete intensely trains in one sport while excluding others, but the reality is multi-sport participation has more benefits. For example, when athletes specialize many of them end up with overuse injuries, damage and pain caused by repetitive use and overuse of the muscles. While in multi-sport participation athletes work on various muscle groups, they don't use the same ones over and over again. To prevent those type of injuries the athletes should take at least one day off per week...
