...ESL Versus Mainstream Classes The College of New Jersey In the article, ESL versus Mainstream Classes: Contrasting L2 Learning Environments (TESOL Quarterly, Vol. 28, No. 2, summer 1994). Linda Harklau explores the differences between ESL and mainstream classes. The article is a result of an ethnographic study of new comer students in a San Francisco Bay area high school. Harklau felt that in order for ESOL students to successfully transition into mainstream classes the differences in instruction in the two types of classes must be identified as well as the advantages and disadvantages of both learning environments. Harklau conducted her study over a 3 ½ year period. The subjects were newcomers to the San Francisco Bat area and were all Chinese ethnic students. She chose these students for the sample group because they represented the predominant group in the ESL program. Her study consisted of 315 hours of classroom observations, samples of homework, samples of schoolwork, school records, and 38 formal interviews. What Harklau found was that there were two significant ways in which the instructions differed. First was the organization and goals of instruction and second was the contrast in the types of social interactions that occurred in each environment. Although the student I chose is very bright, he does have disabilities that permits his growth academically therefore qualifying him for Special Education services. This student moved to the United States at the age of 12. He spoke no English at all and had accomplished to learn English on his own determination by speaking with his adoptive parents, playing video games, and watching television. After enrolling in school he was classified and enrolled as an English Language Learner. This student has excelled at tremendous speeds. Now that he is a junior in high school, he is at a high L3 and by test scores would be considered an advanced L4 or early L5. Due to his disability and being in Special Ed classes, he will never be able to advance past a L3 status in high school. Both teachers and students adopt the grammar-translation method, which focuses on vocabulary, grammar and linguistic phenomenon rather than on listening and speaking. The teaching pattern is text-based and teacher-dominated, and will inevitably prevent students from developing their creativities. I used to be an English teacher in a vocational college of China and the ages of my students usually range from 17 to 21. In the process of English learning, students often confront with some concrete problems. Issues of language use and instruction are a past, present, and future hotbed of debate. It seems that teachers are instructed on how to instruct, while voters are granted the power to make or break educational practices. California is one of the most volatile states when considering how best to instruct English language learners (ELLs). There has been regular discussion about the best way to educate ELLs. In 1968, the door to funding was officially opened for bilingual education. According to Purcell (2002), the Bilingual Education Act authorized federal funding for programs that addressed the needs of students who had limited English skills. With more cases of disgruntled students and parents, it was clear that the education of English language learners was not going to come easily. While the concept of bilingual education is admirable, the fact is that the delivery of the education left much to be desired. With the level of dissatisfaction, the need for reform had arrived.
