...Soft drink sales correlate with the weather Squashes and cordials are typical of soft drinks in seeing their strongest sales over the summer months as hydration and refreshment becomes more important to consumers. Following two warm summers in 2013 and 2014, 2015 saw fewer hours of sunshine over the key July and August months in particular. Summer 2015 was also wetter than average, with July seeing almost twice as much rainfall as in 2013 and 2014 (see Market Drivers). Squashes/cordials are traditionally a commodity category Squashes/cordials are a very affordable option against other soft drinks, helping to drive penetration to 82%. However, this has also contributed towards squashes/ cordials being seen as a cupboard staple which it is difficult to encourage consumers to pay more for. Super-concentrated squashes have had some success in raising the average price of the category (see Market Drivers). Sugar concerns impact the market Consumer concerns regarding the sugar in food and drink are widespread, driven by media coverage and the government’s efforts to tackle rising obesity. ‘No added sugar’ has become a prominent feature of many squashes/cordials, with Britvic removing all full-sugar variants from its Robinsons range from early 2015. Meanwhile, Ribena was among companies affected by Tesco’s delisting of full-sugar soft drinks targeting kids, although nosugar variants continue to be sold by the retailer (see Market Drivers). Companies...

...Pumpkins Pumpkins are a fruit that belong in the same family as squash and cucumbers. They are grown in six of the seven continents. In the United States the pumpkin is a common symbol in many fall activities and holidays, the most popular of them being Halloween and thanksgiving. October is the month in which the majority of pumpkins are sold. On October 31 children and adults alike use pumpkins to make jack lanterns. These decorations are most commonly in the form of a face represented by the eyes, nose, and mouth. A candle is typically placed inside allowing light to shine through providing the “lantern “effect. Pumpkins are also edible and are used in many recipes. In the colonial times they were used to make pie crusts, but now it is much more common to be used as a filling instead. They were also used by the Indians for medicinal purposes as a first aid for snake bites. Trees Trees are a very symbolic plant. Used as an outline to map ones family history, to being a self sustained ecosystem of its own, the tree has represented many things throughout history. With its roots reaching deep into the ground to provide nutrients for the trunk, branches, and leaves, they are a perfect example of the circle of life. As the leaves wither and die they fall to the ground and begin to decay providing food to be used again by the tree from which they came. This self perpetuating cycle has been around for billions of years and continues today. This phenomenon has...

...The 43-year-old company, which declared bankruptcy last year and emerged with a new owner, says it has learned from its mistakes and has a strategy to rebuild its brand. It’s a saga that has played out many times before in business: an iconic brand loses its way and has to struggle to regain its position in the market. For Prince, at stake is the future of a company that once had more than 130 employees and now is looking to add to its current staff of 50. Its strategy includes expanding its product line and bringing back some old favorites, being more active in social media, and continuing to help develop the next batch of top tennis players. Ballardie cited a number of factors that pushed Prince into bankruptcy last May, when the company had $55.2 million in assets and more than $77 million in liabilities. “It really was the perfect storm,” said Ballardie, a 10-year Prince executive who previously led Eastern Hemisphere operations. “A number of things collided. One thing was we were too insular with our technology.” In the mid-2000s, Prince introduced its O3 technology, which features oversized string holes, known as “O-Ports,” on the side of rackets. The O-Ports improve aerodynamics and, in turn, racket speed. By the end of the decade, Prince sold only O-Port rackets. Ballardie said tennis players who preferred more traditional rackets were forced to turn to other manufacturers. The downturn in the economy also slammed Prince. “Prince is, and has always been...

To play soccer you must get the ball into the goal post passing the keeper without using your hands, they are located on both sides of the field. The team with the most points wins the game. Soccer has its own organisation that promotes the game and holds tournaments. The organisation is known as FIFA (Federation de Football Association) which was founded in 1904. Perfection of this skill allows intercepting the ball with ease and to handle the ball while keeping his/her head up. Step 2. Dribbling Dribbling is kicking and controlling the ball while in motion. To dribble you must kick the ball hard enough so it goes forward, but light enough to keep it within reach of your feet. Step 3. Passing Passing is kicking the ball to a team member allowing them to be able to assist you in winning the game. It helps to watch where your team members are so you can assume where they will be running to. By doing so, this allows you to kick the ball ahead of your teammate so they can run to the ball. ...Studies Squash (or Cucurbitaceae for you Latin buffs out there) belong to the gourd or melon family and are divided into two main types, summer and winter squash. Summer squash are the more fragile of the two – they’re not suitable for storing over long periods and while less nutrient-dense than winter squash, due to their high water content, still provide some important health benefits. Examples of summer squash include courgettes and the aptly-named yellow summer squash. Winter squash are hardier than their summer cousins and are available from August to March, but they’re at their best from October to November, and they can be stored for extended periods ranging from 1-6 months. Winter squash include varieties such as pumpkins, acorn, butternut and spaghetti squash. Most of us are familiar with pumpkins as they are carved into scary looking jack-o’-lanterns at Halloween. The type of pumpkins used for the lanterns are less edible and it’s typically the smaller, sugar pumpkins that are used in cooking. The dried seeds are also a favourite in many dishes. Squash history Squashes are originally native to Central and South America and pumpkins in particular were one of the staples in the Central American diet. The name pumpkin is derived from the old French word ‘pompion’ meaning ripe or cooked by the sun. Over time, squash cultivation spread across North America, the Native Americans called them ‘askutasquash’ which is where the modern name ‘squash’ originates. Squash was once...

...Waffle A waffle is a leavened batter or dough cooked between two plates, patterned to give a characteristic size, shape and surface impression. Etymology The word “waffle” first appears in the English language in 1725: "Waffles. Take flower, cream..."[2] It is directly derived from the Dutch wafel, which itself derives from the Middle Dutch wafele.[3] While the Middle Dutch wafele is first attested to at the end of the 13th century, it is preceded by the French walfre in 1185; both are considered to share the same Frankish etymological rootwafla.[4] Depending on the context of the use of wafla, it either means honeycomb or cake. History Medieval origins Waffles are preceded, in the early Middle Ages, around the period of the 9th–10th centuries, with the simultaneous emergence of fer à hosties /hostieijzers (communion wafer irons) and moule à oublies (wafer irons).[7][8] While the communion wafer irons typically depicted imagery of Jesus and his crucifixion, the moule à oublies featured more trivial Biblical scenes or simple, emblematic designs.[7] The format of the iron itself was almost always round and considerably larger than those used for communion.[9][10] The oublie was, in its basic form, composed only of grain flour and water – just as was the communion wafer.[11] It took until the 11th century, as a product of The Crusades bringing new culinary ingredients to Western Europe, for flavorings such as orange blossom water to be added to the oublies; however, locally-sourced...

...The quote by Gideon Rosen who teaches Philosophy at Princeton impacted me and made think about who I was. Till then I looked at myself only as a Squash player. In between games and matches or during training, my mind started veering towards the above-mentioned words and I could not help but ruminate about what my culture was and what I had taken from it. At the outset, going by the cliched definition, I was a Tamil Brahmin; therefore I belonged to the highest rung of the Hindu society’s hierarchical order. But then, brahmins or the learned ones stayed cloistered in their small world of rituals and traditions and were versed in the Vedic ‘mantras’ or Hindu metric texts. However, that did not define me, I was far from it. I played Squash, trained with my coach or other players, travelled in groups to different cities in my country, India, even to distant shores, many times half way across the world, to play with ‘meat-eaters’ and the ‘impure ones’ and thrived in that. I had no time for what my cultural comrades did. I was pals with people of all religions, races and linguistic groups. My friends spoke languages from Tamil to Marathi and Hindi in India to German, French, Chinese and Samoan, to name some and we shared a bon homie unlike any I had known in my culture group....
