...Elizabeth Tran Dr. McCarthy English 102 10 May 2015 How The Media Affects The Asian Community Just last month ABC premiered their new show Fresh Off The Boat, which happens to be one of the few shows ever to be centered around an Asian-American family on American television. Growing up in America with first generation immigrant parents has not been easy, and growing up in a culture where you can’t even see yourself in everyday media makes it even harder to adjust. I remember watching T.V. as a kid and rarely did I see any Asian Americans on the screen; and if I did, the characters were portrayed in a way I was not familiar with. Finally getting a show like Fresh Off The Boat makes it seem like Asian Americans are breaking through barriers and making their way into mainstream media. As an Asian American myself, I happen to see this as a huge deal; finally, there is something I can relate to on T.V. Even though the Asian-American community has been excited and supportive of the series, it apparently does not appeal to the majority, and there have already been rumors of the show’s cancellation. But why is a show as innovative as Fresh Off the Boat being cancelled? The show has so many fans and is considered ground braking in the Asian-American community, but that is not enough to keep the show on air apparently. -As a minority in America, Asian Americans deserve to have their culture portrayed accurately in mainstream media. However, whenever there are Asian characters...

...Food Education My fourth year in high school, sitting down eating a sub in Subway. Looking for something to read, I look down at my napkin and read what calories I am ingesting for the certain type of sub I’m eating. Everything I ever eaten here is below 500 calories. This is what brought healthy food choices to my attention. I turn my phone on, and google search, “Deaths from obesity.” I found the website World Health Organization, and a statistic caught my eye, “Around 3.4 million adults die each year as a result of being overweight or obese”(who.int). I had no idea someones diet can kill so many people, and I knew things needed to be changed. I admit, watching what I ingest was not my first priority as a child. Whenever we stopped by a fast food restaurant, I was not thinking how much work it would take to burn all the calories off. Big Macs; Whoppers, Orange Chicken from Panda Express, you name it I ate it. Not just the main course was unhealthy, the drinks and the sides were just as bad. It all added up to more than 1000 calorie meals, which my body could not handle. An average person only needs 2000 calories daily, these meals through off your digestive system. Yet besides, most of the meals had little to no basic nutrients I needed on a daily basis. Veggies and other healthy choices were not important to me. The result of my crazy diet was laziness, overweightness, and depression. I never fully recovered from it, I still eat unhealthy sometimes. But as I age, my diet...

...my topic question is “what is the benefits of volunteer for college students?” By pointing out the questions, I had come up with three main points for the paper. The first benefit of volunteer is helping people to have healthier lives. For example, doing volunteer work outside in fresh environment could help people to be more positive and more physically active. Not only that, volunteer helps people to reduce stress and enhance their happiness. The second benefit of volunteer is helping college students to get involved with the community, thus, helping them to get a successful job. Volunteer in a specific field helps a student to get used to what he/she is studying. Also, while volunteering, a student can meet many others people, which helps him/her to improve his/her communication skill, his/her confidence, and his/her networking with others. Last but not least, volunteer helps the world a better place. There are many non-profit organization opening, which bring many students together to help those less fortunate people. The Benefits of Volunteer There exists one question that has been discussed among high school and college students: “What do students usually do during their free time?” The answers vary from doing exercises, joining organizations, taking part-time job to sleeping, reading, going for a walk. For me, as well as many others students, I choose to do volunteer. According to the President’s Task Force...

...Benefits of Sex The health benefits of sex extend well beyond the bedroom. Turns out sex is good for you in ways you may never have imagined. 1. Sex Relieves Stress A big health benefit of sex is lower blood pressure and overall stress reduction, according to researchers from Scotland who reported their findings in the journal Biological Psychology. They studied 24 women and 22 men who kept records of their sexual activity. Then the researchers subjected them to stressful situations -- such as speaking in public and doing verbal arithmetic -- and noted their blood pressure response to stress. Those who had intercourse had better responses to stress than those who engaged in other sexual behaviors or abstained. Another study published in the same journal found that frequent intercourse was associated with lower diastolic blood pressure in cohabiting participants. Yet other research found a link between partner hugs and lower blood pressure in women. 2. Sex Boosts Immunity Good sexual health may mean better physical health. Having sex once or twice a week has been linked with higher levels of an antibody called immunoglobulin A or IgA, which can protect you from getting colds and other infections. Scientists at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., took samples of saliva, which contain IgA, from 112 college students who reported the frequency of sex they had. Those in the "frequent" group -- once or twice a week -- had higher levels of IgA than those in the other three groups...

...The biggest technological change recently is the use of mobile phones. These days everybody seems to have them. Cell phones have improved safety. Children can now reach their parents and vice-versa. Schools can reach parents, too, and parents don’t need to worry about being out of contact during the day, as they can always be reached in an emergency. Everyone can connect everybody else in the matter of a few presses of buttons, a signal and a minute to connect. Victims of serious accidents such as car wrecks and earthquakes have been able to use their cell phones to contact help. With cell phones, help is always just a phone call away. Cell phones also have some negative impacts. It can be hard for people to get disconnected, for example, from work. Some employers assume that their employees will be permanently available for consultation or discussion, even when the employee is on vacation. When cell phones were first introduced, there was a lot of discussion about cell phone etiquette, but these days, most people seem to ignore that advice. People talk loudly on their phone in public spaces, and they take phone calls while in the middle of conversations with others. People answer their phones in movie theaters and conference presentations. Cell phones are a wonderful technology that adds to safety and the feeling of connectedness. They have become essential for business and personal use. Also, technology has helped improve productivity at work by allowing manufacturers to...

...Sleeping early means that one should finish his/her work on time and get to bed as soon as possible like ten o’clock in the night. Sleeping at 10:00 pm gives us sufficient time of sleep like 8 hours till 6:00 am in the morning. I totally agree that sleeping early is very beneficial for every human being. There are countless benefits of sleeping early like, one can get up in morning for exercise, remain fresh all day, have a good healthy body, have a good social life, remain punctual and gain excellent time management skills. We assume that when we sleep our body and brain goes to sleep as well, this is not true; our brain keeps on working and monitors the biological maintenance tasks which keep us running all our life like managing hormone system, immune system, body temperature, skin, muscles, blood and digestive system. There is an old saying “Early to bed and early to rise Makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise” This piece of wisdom passed on to us in childhood, do say it all about the importance of sleep but we seem to forget or rather ignore it as we grow older. It becomes an easy choice to cut back on sleep in order to fulfill the needs and demands of modern life. We need to understand that sleep is a necessity, not a luxury. The quality of sleep decides the quality of waking hours including mental and physical activity, productivity, emotional balance, creative processes and even weight gain or loss. The requirement of sleep varies from person to person. Researchers...

...Good morning ladies and gentlemen, I stand here today as a voice against corruption, the most prevailing social evils which shrouds our society. It may start with a simple free drink or a friend asking you to look the other way while he does something? It is a vicious chain reaction, when one public officer is bribed it becomes easier to bribe another, I have seen many bright deserving students with shattered dreams because they could not afford to bribe the administration of the school they dreamed to go, our forefathers did not fight with their blood, tears and sweat for nearly a century so that we doom ourselves with greed and selfishness. Corruption concerns us all, young and old, but today I stress that the youth take more active stand against this abhorrence, I say this because our country is a young country, 75% of the population is below the age of 35, it is time for us to fight and eradicate this crippling disease, it is time, to clean our house. It pains me to say we are responsible for our country to be marred with this mark, being the largest democracy in the world it is our responsibility to choose our representatives, to choose a leader who puts the country, its development and its pride before their individuality, it is the youth who should cure the cancer of corruption eating way our society. We already possess the power, it is time we exercised our power of our democracy, to quote martin Luther king Jr. “the time is always right to do the right thing” it is...

...Absenteeism Factors Contribute to Teachers Absence Impact of Teachers Absenteeism Measuring Absenteeism Controlling Absenteeism Conclusion Bibliography 3 Chapter I The Problem and Its Scope Introduction Rates of employee absences and the effects of absences on productivity are topics of conversation in many organizations. One reason is that high rates of employee absence may signal weak management and poor labor-management relations. In the education sphere, employee absenteeism is a special problem, not only in terms of the cost to the school (payment to substitute teachers) but also the wasted education-time that is liable to impair the sense of confidence that the general public has in the schools. Students may eventually lose their desire to learn if the regular teacher is frequently absent and the curriculum is delivered by an array of substitute teachers. In essence, teacher absenteeism has important implications for school reform, teacher training, educational leadership, and issues related to social justice aimed at promoting equity and excellence in the...

...Literature Review Investigating the relationship between self-efficacy and academic success Cheng Zhang PSY 301 LAB Jason Wallin 23/10/2013 Literature Review: Investigating the relationship between self-efficacy and academic success During the past decades, the importance of self-efficacy has been receiving much attention from many scholars from a variety of research fields such as psychology and education. Scholars want to find the relationship of self-efficacy and the outcome of academic performance. According to the self-efficacy theory proposed by Bandura in the late 1970s, self-efficacy is the individual’s perceived capability to perform a given duty successfully (Bandura, 1977). As Bandura stated in a more recent article, the belief that a person possesses the power to generate expected effects by his or her actions is the fundamental basis of any factors that serve as guides and motivators. Without such a belief, it is quite hard for a person to find sufficient incentive to take actions or overcome difficulties (Bandura, 2002, p. 2). Pajaresand Schunk(2001) summarized that Bandura’s social cognitive theory emphasizes the important role of self-efficacy belief in the process where individuals make decisions and ultimately take actions to pursue their goals. Alternatively speaking, it is more likely for people to engage in activities when they feel confident and have competence than those that they do not. Meanwhile, according to Hackett and Betz (1981), expectations...

Davies granted the NAACP lawyers, Thurgood Marshall and Wiley Branton the right to stop governor Faubus from using the National Guard to stop the nine black students from entering the high school. After finally agreeing to not use the National Guard, he wished the students would stay away until integration could occur without violence. He knew there would be violence African Americans in their school. September 23, 1957 the nine black students were off to school. Being smart, they went in through the rear so they could avoid as many conflicts as possible. White mobs joined together to protest the new students while reporters met to support the black students. All of the white mobs went crazy when they finally heard that the new students were in their high school. The nine black students actually exited out the rear of the building the minute the mobs came so they would not get hurt. The following day President Eisenhower actually sent the 101st Airborne Division so the students would finish their education. Each student had their own patroller but whites still hurt the black students. Melba Patillo was stabbed in the hallway and had acid sprayed in her eyes. If it weren’t for her patroller pouring water in her eyes right away, she would have been blind the rest of her life. A few weeks later the patrollers were relieved of their body guard duties...
