For most college freshman, being away from home and living in a new place is a very difficult thing to do. If someone is getting less than the recommended amount of sleep or is sleeping restlessly or disturbed throughout the night, it carries over into their day and often has negative effects on their studies. Sleep is very important for everyone but especially for a college student under a great deal of pressure and stress. Losing sleep is not good and is even worse when you lose it because of your own snoring. Just about everyone snores occasionally, but if snoring happens frequently it can affect the quantity and quality of your sleep; snoring can lead to poor sleep and daytime fatigue, irritability, and increased health problems. A change in sleeping position, clearing nasal passages, and cleaning bedroom furniture are a few ways to stop or limit snoring during the night in order to prevent multiple problems from occurring due to snoring. Because sleep is so important, not only for a person’s body but also for their mind, it is imperative that any unnecessary disruption occurring during their sleep be dealt with as quickly as possible. When someone’s nose is clogged, it becomes more difficult to breathe, which can result in snoring during the night. Steam is a miracle worker when it comes to clearing the sinuses. Some ways to clear the sinuses with steam are by taking a hot shower, inhaling steam from a hot cup of water, or even drinking a hot cup of tea. Also one could even better the results of taking a hot shower to reduce snoring by placing a “Vicks Vapor Disk” on the floor of the shower; not only will the steam from the shower help to clear your sinuses but the steam coming off of the disks will advance the results even more. For the best results, these remedies should be done right before bedtime to ensure that the sinuses are still clear when going to sleep. It is very important to remember to thoroughly clean and disinfect all the surfaces in one’s bedroom as allergies play a key role in snoring. There are so many things out in the world to be allergic to; household items are often forgotten about when attempting to steer clear of allergy problems. Elements in bedrooms such as pillows, fan blades and furniture, unless cleaned repeatedly, constantly have dust containing numerous allergens collected on them. If a person suffering from snoring also has allergy problems, more than likely, the allergies are what are causing the snoring. Bedding and pillows should be washed every two to three weeks, replacing all pillows every six months. One suffering from allergies as well as snoring might also consider investing in a hypoallergenic pillow; hypoallergenic pillows are designed to repel dust mites, one of the leading causes of allergies. If these steps are taken, snoring due to allergies should stop. Getting a good night’s sleep is very important and if it is not achieved, there can be very severe consequences. Anything that disrupts a person’s sleep and keeps them from getting a peaceful night of rest should be cut out as promptly as possible.
