...The Maritime Strategy of China in the Asia-Pacific Region Origins, Development and Impact HUANG, AN-HAO Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2009 School of Social and Political Sciences Faculty of Arts The University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper ABSTRACT This thesis aims to examine how and why a continental-oriented China has shifted its maritime strategic orientation and naval force structure from its coast toward the far seas in an era of interdependent international system. Generally, China is an ancient continental land power with an incomplete oceanic awareness. With the transformation after the Cold War of China’s grand strategy from landward security to seaward security, maritime security interests have gradually become the most essential part of China’s strategic rationale. Undoubtedly, the quest for sea power and sea rights has become Beijing’s main maritime strategic issue. Given China’s escalating maritime politico-economic-military leverage in the Asia-Pacific region, its desire to become a leading sea power embodying global strategic thinking means that it must expand its maritime strategy by developing its navy and preparing for armed confrontation in terms of international relations realism. Conversely, Beijing’s maritime policy leads at the same time towards globalization, which involves multilateralism and strategic coexistence of a more pragmatic kind. This research...

...Executive Summary Introduction/Background of the study Objective of the study Scope of the study Methodology Project findings Recommendations 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. References Executive Summary As Prahlad and Hat point out, the economies of vastly populated countries such as China, India, and the former Soviet Union present a profusion of consumers and immense growth potential for multinational corporations. The trick is for senior management to fully understand that this market possibility exists and that tapping into it may require a radical departure from the traditional, developed-economy mindset. As Nike’s financial record indicates, market saturation and intense competition in Tier One economies has squelched Nike’s growth trajectory. While the Swoosh continues to penetrate typical Western markets, tapping into the increasing numbers of “middle and lower class” consumers in emerging markets could offer a phenomenal expansion opportunity if the firm can create the right business model. In addition, beyond the potential economic benefits from this venture, Nike’s World Shoe Project also offers a credible response to the labor issues that have buffeted the company, and leverages their efforts to minimize the environmental impact of their production activities. • Introduction/Background of the study The words “Just make me the shoe!” echoed down the boardroom table to Tom Hartage a 17 – year veteran of the running shoe company, Nike Inc...

...Case Study of Google in China Case Study of Google in China The SEO Consultants (2010) website highlights Google as the number one leading internet search engine within the United States today. In earlier years, the managers’ of Google recognized to remain competitive they needed to enter into the international territory of China. Shortly after launching the search engine in China from the home base of the U.S., the Chinese government blocked the site to prevent users from access to information the government deemed should be censored. Once unblocked, the government censored the search results users of China received. Google management determined they needed to base an operation center within China to better service users and fully tap into this market; however, there were many hurdles including values and ethics that needed consideration (Hill, 2009). Legal, Cultural, and Ethical Challenges Google’s mantra and mission of “don’t be evil” reflects the values of the company. Originally it simply meant to always provide the end user with only the highest quality of search results, but over time the company embraced it as their way of doing business. The culture within China is very different than that of the U.S. With the company physically placing operations in China, their Chinese operations would be subject to the laws and censorship of China. This presented an ethical challenge to Google management, as their commitment has always been to provide the end user...
