Examining the Pros
Our group decided to dissect and analyze three distinct career paths within the financial advising industry: Financial Advisor, Director of Recruiting, and Operations Manager/Principal. These specific careers were selected among a pool of many others because we believe there is a correlation with these professions with the beginning, middle and end stages of a career in the industry. To learn more about these fields we were given the pleasure of interviewing and talking to the individuals that have seen success, failure, and have overcome obstacles to earn lucrative incomes throughout their career. Human resource departments in advising firms across the country select highly qualified individuals to represent the firm and the families of whom they serve. This is a rigorous process because it is of the utmost importance to hire good people that conduct themselves in an honorable manner and that can be trusted. It is imperative that advisors follow basic human ethics such as trust, honesty, and doing everything they can to serve the clients. We first interviewed the director of recruiting of one of the biggest and reputable firms in the city of St. Louis. The director of recruiting oversees the whole hiring process of potential advisors, investment representatives and receptionists among other positions. The position requires intuition and the reading of an interviewees character before they move on within the interview process. Number one, how is the pay and how potentially lucrative can this career path be? The director with great pride said that she was 100% happy with how she was being financially rewarded, and believes that the advisors as well as the employees of other positions are generously rewarded for their efforts. The company she directs stresses keeping the best and the way to keep the best is by rewarding them for their work. We also talked about the added perks of working for her firm, such as paid vacations. Members of the firm have planned out a week trip to a resort in Amalfi, Southern Italy. The work hard, play hard attitude keeps the employees motivated to work with the added incentive of vacations. She said that the company wants their advisors to engage in the areas they enjoy. The only negative that she expressed to us is that for some, work life balance can be an issue. The industry can suck you in, by not necessarily making you introverted, but that your whole life and friendships revolve around your co-workers and your clients. She compares it to a team or almost as if it were a cult following. Overall, our interviewee has given us great insight on how they prospect clients and advisors, how lucrative this industry is, and how much fun it can really be if you are willing to work hard for
