Is Hollister’s Bullying Policy Effective? Students come to school five days a week expecting to have a normal day. They expect to go through all of their classes and then go home at the end of the day. This was not the case on April 20, 1999 in Columbine High School when Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris shot and killed twelve classmates and one teacher. It is belief that the Columbine High School shooting happened because of bullying. Could this have been prevented if there was a clear bully policy in place? Can we prevent this from happening in Hollister High School based on what is stated in our bully policy? The current policy states, “students who participates in bullying or who retaliate against anyone who reports bullying will be discipled…show more content… The policy states that “employees will report an incident within 2-school days of the employee witnessing the incident.” (Hollister R-V Schools 14) They report cases of bullying by filling out an Incident Report Form. This supports the claim that instances of bullying are reported. Due to the fact that cases of bullying are reported, there will be an investigation regarding the incident. As long as the bully is reported, the staff and administration will take action and there will be an investigation to decide on the discipline of the bully within 10 schools days. Bullies will be disciplined based upon the district’s discipline code. Possible punishments could include in or out of school suspension, detention, removal from honors and if the situation is deemed worthy, the police will be involved.
