Delirium

...Delirium (Lauren Oliver novel) Delirium is a dystopian young adult novel written by Lauren Oliver, published in January 2011 by HarperCollins (HarperTeen), about a young girl, Lena Haloway, who falls in love in a society where love is seen as a disease. Plot The story is set in Portland, Maine, in an alternate present. Civilization is concentrated in those cities which escaped the severe bombings of decades past. Travel between cities is highly restricted. Electric fences separate the city from the Wilds—unregulated territory which was presumably mostly destroyed by bombs. The totalitarian government teaches that love is a disease, named amor deliria nervosa, commonly referred to as "the deliria". A surgical cure for the deliria has been developed and is mandatory for citizens 18 years old and over. Lena has looked forward to the procedure for years, convinced as she is by the government that love is a horrible disease that must be destroyed from mankind's system. However, mere months before her scheduled procedure, Lena falls in love with an Invalid (a person over 18 who has not taken the Cure and lives in the Wilds) named Alex. He was born in the Wilds outside the city, and has pretended to be cured in order to live undetected in the city and be in the resistance. He offers Lena the means of escape from the procedure that will destroy her ability to love. The two of them would leave the city and live in the Wilds, joining the rebels who oppose the procedure and the government...

Summary of New Books

...A Summary of Christine Smallwood’s “New Books” Christine Smallwood, author of “New Books” published in Harper’s Magazine in 2014 begins the article by giving the reader the complete details of a wrestling and boxing match with a man named Arrichion. Arrichion started his career in boxing and wrestling in the time of 564 B.C... He won only two titles in his career, one in 572 B.C. and the other in 568 B.C. Arrichion’s last match occurred when he was in a chokehold and refused to tap out, eventually breaking out of it and dislocating his opponents’ ankle. Unfortunately after winning the match, Arrichion, injured himself by “breaking his own neck” (73) causing his own death. According to Smallwood’s article, the Greek motto, “Victory or Death” (73) takes on a new connotation; “Victory in Death” (73) thus implying 2500 years later, professional football players today are more likely to suffer from some type of brain trauma due to their desire to win championships like that of Arrichion. Who knew that the life expectancy of a professional football player was only the age of fifty-five? Several professional football players have committed suicide due to repeated concussions while playing their sport. According to the article by Smallwood, the issue has become so pervasive, Dave Duerson, a former safety in the NFL, “shot himself in the heart in 2011, he left a note asking that his brain be sent to Boston University” (73). Smallwood points out that according to neurological...

Rathe Toufic's 'In Distracted'

...also be just a book of aphorisms, which leaves the readers in thought of Toufic’s philosophies in a larger context. This elevates the piece with light humor that is not responsible for a serious literary political stance; in effect maximizing its potential of being received to “an available stranger”. Toufic, Jalal. "Exerpts." In Vampires. Barrytown, N.Y.: Station Hill ;, 1991. 1-4. Summary: Excerpts from Vampires analyze various films that uses the mythical character of vampires as their main subject. However, it is not quite the typical analysis of the characters’ behavioral qualities the writing focuses on. But instead, it is the cinematographic techniques involved with the portrayal and filming of such characters that he discusses. Toufic delivers through the ideas of time, tunneling through space, flas and apparent threshold and lapses. For instance, the case in which the vampire tunnels through doors that open by themselves, the shot of the scene manipulates the reality through edits such as dissolving cutting of scenes. These techniques allow us to reimagine the world within the hands of the director. Toufic refers to Grillet’s quote, “The duration of the modern work is no way a summary, a condensed version, of an extended and more ‘real’ duration which would be that of the anecdote, of the narrated story”. Toufic continues, “The entire story of Marienbad happens neither in two years nor in three days, but exactly in one hour and a half - Marienbad lasts only as long...

...A Farewell to Arms By Ernest Hemingway Book Summary Next About A Farewell to Arms A Farewell to Arms begins in the Alps around the frontier between Italy and present-day Slovenia. Allied with Britain, France, and Russia against the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Germany, Italy is responsible for preventing the Austro-Hungarian forces from assisting the Germans on the war's western front, and Russia in the east. The novel's narrator and protagonist is eventually identified as Lieutenant Frederic Henry, an American who has volunteered for the Italian army because the United States has not yet entered the war. Henry supervises a group of Italian ambulance drivers. After a wintertime leave spent touring the country, Lieutenant Henry returns to the captured town at the front where his unit lives. One evening his roommate, a surgeon and lieutenant in the Italian army named Rinaldi, introduces Henry to two British nurses: Catherine Barkley and her friend Helen Ferguson. Catherine and Henry talk of the war and of her fiancé, killed in combat the year before; clearly she has been traumatized by the experience. On his second visit to the British hospital, they kiss. When Henry again visits Catherine, she tells him that she loves him and asks whether he loves her. He responds that he does. One night, Lieutenant Henry and his fellow ambulance-drivers settle into a dugout across the river from the enemy troops. While the drivers are eating, the Austrian bombardment wounds Henry in the leg...

Dead Poet Society

...Film i Engelsk Bilag 1a FILM ANALYSIS – an introduction (Source: http://www.filmeducation.org) – bearbejdet af Mi og LK, Favrskov Gymnasium Reading a film is just like reading a book, except that instead of looking at a written page we are looking at the cinema screen. Reading a film works in exactly the same way as a written text, or a picture, except that the tools that are used to create meaning are different. We call these tools film language. The opening sequence From the moment we first start watching a film, we begin to get involved. The first few minutes of a film (the opening sequence) are very important to us as they give us lots of clues about the film: 1) what will the film be about (conflicts/themes); 2) who are the most important characters (hero, villain, love interest); 3); what is the setting of the film (time and place); 4) the genre; and finally, 5) what sort of film language characterizes the film? We look at all these elements and begin to put them into context. Based on their environment, how they look, what they say and what we see them do, we make assumptions about the characters, their roles in the film and their relationship to each other. We also recognize so-called genre markers (things we associate with one particular genre) which tell us if we are watching a Western or a Sc-Fi film and, thus, form specific expectations about what is going to happen during the rest of the film. At the same time, we listen to the sounds and the music...

Pro-Slavery In James Mcpherson's Battle Cry Of Freedom

...Introduction There have been numerous assessments of the events which occurred during the Civil War from 1861-1865, but none seem to justly satisfy the absolute, complete, and thorough accounts of James McPherson’s extremely detailed book, Battle Cry of Freedom. McPherson recounts the entire story of the Civil War, stresses on themes such as slavery and writes with a style of contingency to help create a deep study of all of the events- what did and did not happen. Battle Cry of Freedom is a masterful, fast paced retelling and remembrance that comes in the shape of a detailed resource. Published in 1988, it is critically acclaimed for its ability to provide in-depth factual storytelling. The amount of thought put into this expansive book by McPherson is researched meticulously as it calls for the skills of cogitation and contemplating. McPherson is a political...

Of Mice and Men

...Reading File – Class 5   1.   Summary Retell the story in your own words or attach a good summary from the internet (mentioning your source)..... The book Of Mice and Men is about two poor guys, George and Lennie, who travel together to find work. Lennie is a big, clumsy  man, who doesn’t know his own strength and he is also childlike, simple and easily forgetful. Lennie goes through  life with his fellow George, a smart guy and hard worker who takes care of Lennie. The book starts with  them walking down a road, they ran away from their job in Weed because the stupid, innocent Lennie touched a ladie’s dress (because Lennie likes soft things). Lennie and George have a shared dream: having their own farm, where they can keep all kinds of animals, and can live from their harvest when they have saved enough money. When they on their way to a ranch, hoping to find work, they sleep in the clearing (a place near a river) for one night. The next day they come to the bunkhouse and they get a job. Soon they meet the other workers on the ranch, including Curley, the son of the boss. Curley is mean, aggressive and a lightweight-boxer. Because he is so small he doesn’t like big guys, he feels threatened by them. So an aggressive look and a rude attitude is his first reaction when he sees big Lennie. The next day when Curley comes into the room, Lennie is attacked by Curley. But strong Lennie defends himself and crushes  (accidentally) the hand of Curley, because he tried to stop...

...SOX Summary Jason Garrett LAW/421 1/12/2014 Instructor: JANE SCHNEIDER The Securities and Exchange Commission was created to hold companies accountable for reporting their current state of financial information on a statement to give the market and investors a snap shot of the company health. This basic legislation of 1933-1934 Securities Act was very basic when you fast forward six or several decades later since that Act there were legislation drafted twice one in 70’s and in the other in the early 90’s. They were introduce to improve on the Securities Acts of ’33 and ‘34 to curt tail newly created unethical practices the rear their head over the course of time but with no new legislative to combat it when it occurred there was no way to control them either. These drafts of new financial regulations were created to add on to the previous Acts to control these new and various forms fraud, falsifying and manipulations by corporations. The draft act of ‘70 did not see the day of light but the one draft in the ‘90s almost made it but was pulled at the last minute and boy that was the one that could have changed what would later change the course of financial history. Unfortunately these legislatives never passed mainly due to the climate in the mid-nineties when making money was so easy from loading up corporations, dotcoms and startups, no one from CEO’s to most politicians did not want more financial regulations. In the late 90’ going into ’00, or before the Sarbanes-Oxley...

With so much experience, no one could blame you for wondering why you need a course or this book to tell you how to look at movies. After all, you might say, “It’s just a movie.” For most of us most of the time, movies are a break from our daily obligations—a form of escape, entertainment, and pleasure. Motion pictures had been popular for fifty years before even most filmmakers, much less scholars, considered movies worthy of serious study. But motion pictures are much more than entertainment. The movies we see shape the way we view the world around us and our place in that world. What’s more, a close analysis of any particular movie can tell us a great deal about the artist, society, or industry that created it. Surely any art form with that kind of influence and insight is worth understanding on the deepest possible level...
