...part of our workplace culture. Some recent statistics regarding text messaging demonstrate how incredibly popular it has become in the last several years: More than 70% of wireless users (or more than 200 million Americans) have an SMS (or “short message service”) package for their mobile device that allows for short text messages to be sent from one device to another. The use of text messaging increased by 107% in 2009. Approximately 2.5 billion text messages are sent each day in the United States. More text messages are now sent via cell phone than calls placed with those same phones. Employers can adopt a policy prohibiting text messaging at work. If text messaging continues, you can discipline employees for violating the policy because, as you note, employees who are texting while at work are not working. Because of the prevalence of text messaging, even if you ban text messaging during work hours, you should put some guidelines in place that address texting in the workplace and require that your employees comply with them. For instance, you should have a policy in place that prevents the sending, receiving, or displaying of messages or images (email, text, or otherwise) on personal mobile devices if those messages or images could be considered harassing, offensive, pornographic, or disruptive to other employees. Your policy should explain that “offensive” content includes anything sexual in nature, as well as anything that might offend someone on the basis of...

...Introduction Short Message Service SMS is today's simplest and cost-effective way to reach a global mobile audience. Thousands of organizations are using messaging already to communicate with customers and employees. SMS was built into the European Global System for Mobile (GSM) standard as an insignificant, additional capability. Yet in many countries SMS was perceived as cheap, and it offered one-to-one, or one-to-many, text communications that could be read at leisure, or more often, immediately. SMS was avidly taken up by young people, forming new cultures of media use.(Goggin & Spurgeon, 2005). Text messaging is instantaneous, inexpensive and personal, and enables numerous applications. In the face of turbulent economic conditions and significant cost pressures, U.S. financial institutions, like their counterparts around the world, are focusing on improving the profitability of their customer relationships, lowering channel costs and enabling more self-service electronic banking. In recent years, the rise of mobile banking has opened a new path for financial institutions to lower the cost to serve their customers, improve their competitive position and increase customer acquisition and loyalty. At the same time, mobile banking establishes a foundation for delivering future products and services that can be monetized, such as mobile payments and remittances. Despite this new ROI opportunity, most institutions have primarily utilized this new channel to drive mobile banking...

...North South University ENG 105.24 Research Paper On Technology In Classroom ( Technology in educating Rural People ) Prepared By: Neha Jajodia ID # 1311448030 Prepared for : MR. Peter Michael Brown ( PMB ) Date : 16th April 2015 Imagine a nation with a population booming with literacy. Where, irrespective of remoteness of village or limitation of seats, every student gets his fair share at educating himself. Sounds like a lot to ask for at this stage. But it's never too late to start trying. Rural education is one field that has been lacking progress in Bangladesh and other third world countries, in general. There are very few schools set up in the rural areas, and as such, students living in remote villages have to walk miles to reach school. Moreover, the scope for higher education is almost negligible. Even within the few schools present in the rural areas, quality of education is usually not up to the mark, with poor infrastructure, absence of proper qualified teachers and other facilities like electricity, etc. This in turn drives more potential students away from school. Attempts to get round this problem have been made by different third world countries in their own ways. Almost all solutions lie in the use of technology. In our neighboring country, India, the government has tried to promote rural education in various ways, like ensuring provision of at least one computer in every school...

...OBE49749 Campaign for Sightsavers Tactical Response Recent research by the market research organisation DJS has revealed some intriguing trends in the attitudes of Britons to donating to charity (DJS 2013). For example, it was found that those who were earning an average income were more likely to donate to charities than those who were earning a higher than average income. Another very important finding of the survey was the fact that charities could be missing out on as much as £665 million in donations a year because they failed to address the main reasons for non-donation, which were found to be financial constraints and a distrust of charities due to lack of information. Among the concerns expressed by respondents were wastage costs, lack of transparency and administration costs. In other words, people were discouraged from donating to charities if they could not see a real and definite impact in the charity’s work. They wanted to feel that their donations were having a definite effect. Within this context then, the communication problems of a charity such as sight savers are twofold: On the one hand, the charity needs to make sure that it has a real presence in the public consciousness, and draw attention towards the urgency of the issues that it is concerned with. On the other hand, it needs to demonstrate to potential donors that their money is being used effectively to address these issues, and that a real impact is being made. A useful starting point for developing...

...SMS Messaging In my English 1301 class, all of the students have not only adapted to the rising technology, but they have embraced texting to the point where they have become entirely dependent on it. Communicating has become more prompt and convenient then it has ever been before. Starting with basic e-mails to instant messaging on famous websites, like Facebook or Twitter. However, these abbreviations are starting to affect the way people communicate with one another and their writing skills. Users of these abbreviations are becoming more, and more psychologically depend on it. When a person sends a text message, it is usually in a modern language that originated from online when chatting. Users have adapted this shorter, quicker abbreviated way of messaging in order to gets their point across in 140 characters or less. Just because something is easier, quicker and shorter is not also right, and it is starting to affect people psychologically and their able to mental write simple paper. Text massaging abbreviations is inappropriate for school, work and formal writing assignments. A user needs to know the difference in how to use formal vs. informal writing that predates text messaging. An individual can ask anyone that has a cell phone, and that person would say, “That they would rather text someone than call”. Why would someone rather text than speak to that person. When a user uses abbreviation, they overlook most of what they have learned about how to properly communicate...

...SMS Text Analysis: Language, Gender and Current Practices Muhammad Shaban Rafi1 Abstract This article tests the assumption that SMS language is like a pidgin in every speech community. The article also examines the assumption that a great motor of SMS lives among females whose lexical and morpho-syntactic choices are different from males. It further speculates influence of SMS language on language of media. One hundred messages were taken randomly from 20 cell phones and perceptions of 25 males and 25 females were recorded on an ordinal scale for analysis. The text was analyzed to look into lexicology, morphology and syntactic levels of texters, and influence of SMS on language of commercials. The results show that a novice intelligible language has evolved through SMS, which is influencing language of media. A significant difference is found between male and female texters’ linguistic properties. Introduction Short Message Service (SMS) language tends to create a novice language, which has become an integral part of the multilingual world. It pursues simple sentences structure for communication. It is assumed that SMS syntactic and lexical choices by the texters are not so different from a child language. A child expresses his feelings through simple present progressive tense e.g. mom eating for ‘Mom is eating’ and Eating for ‘I am eating’. The empirical data show that SMS language over-looks orthographic and syntactic rules of a language with a great emphasis...

...THE ROLE OF SMS TEXT MESSAGES Ruth Rettie, School of Marketing, Kingston University, United Kingdom Matthew Brum, MBA student, Kingston University, United Kingdom Email contact: R.Rettie@Kingston.ac.uk ABSTRACT This paper explores the marketing role of SMS text messages. While Internet based m-commerce has been disappointing, commercial applications for SMS are developing rapidly. The conceptual framework compares SMS to telemarketing and email marketing, and describes the key features of this new medium. Five distinct SMS business models are identified and discussed. We used quantitative research among mobile users to assess attitudes to SMS marketing. Most respondents were concerned about junk messages and wanted to control incoming messages. Initial attitudes to advertising in text messages were negative, but many were prepared to accept advertising in exchange for discounts or promotional offers. INTRODUCTION The development of Internet based m-commerce has been disappointing: restricted sites, slow download, small screens, and the limited number of handsets, currently constrain commercial development. At the same time companies are beginning to recognize the potential of SMS (Short Message Service) text messages, as a low cost, high impact communication medium, that can be received by almost all mobile phone users. Several companies are adopting highly innovative m-commerce strategies using SMS text messaging. 15 billion SMS messages (Cyberatlas 2001a) were...
