...Sven Shibahara February 4th, 2015 Human Resource Management Appraising the Secretaries at Sweetwater U 1. Do you think that the experts’ recommendations will be sufficient to get most of the administrators to fill out the rating forms properly? Why? Why not? What additional actions (if any) do you think will be necessary? Yes I do, the sample performance rating form that the experts recommended Sweetwater to use instead of the good or excellent formula they were using is way more in depth. For instance, this rates the secretaries on a scale of 1-5 on different skills such as communication, organizational know-how, and achieving business results. Within each of these categories, the employer has a chance to write in their own words how the secretaries are excelling in these categories or how they can improve on them. You have to go in with the mindset that every employee is excellent at what they do and just help them develop ways to do their job more effectively. 2. Do you think that Vice President Winchester would be better off dropping graphic rating forms, substituting instead one of the other techniques discussed in this chapter, such as a ranking method? Why? Yes, I believe a ranking method is one of the best ways to go about rating someone’s work performance. I like the idea of seeing your individual strengths and weaknesses right in front of you from the perspective of other people. For me, it’s like gaining the drive to make myself a better worker by trying...

...STUDY Appraising the Secretaries of Sweet water University SUMMARY OF THE CASE: This case study is about the newly appointed vice president, Rob Winchester and about the difficulties he faced shortly after his university career began .Rob's boss, Sweetwater's president assigned him the first task of improving the performance appraisal system used to evaluate secretarial and clerical performance. In this case, the main difficulty is the performance appraisal which was directly tied to salary increases given at the end of the year. The graphic rating forms which were used to evaluate clerical staff were not efficient as these forms never gave the true evaluation of performance. So, to change the faulty performance appraisal system two Sweetwater experts gave their recommendations to solve the problem. The first recommendation was not to use graphic rating forms as this rating method did not provide any clear picture about the good or bad performance. The second recommendation was not to force administrators to arbitrarily rate at least half their secretaries as something less than excellent. The recommendations given by the experts were good and made sense but these recommendations created problems like efficacy of any graphic rating forms if it is compared to the original forced ranking approach used by Rob and what should be the basis of performance appraisal. ANALYSIS OF THE CASE: The job of Rob Winchester was to completely change the performance rating system of the university...

...1. Do you think that the experts’ recommendations will be sufficient to get most of the administrators to fill out the rating forms properly? Why? Why not? What additional actions (if any) do you think will be necessary? Yes, I think that the experts’ recommendations will encourage administrators to fill the forms out properly. The sample performance rating form that the expert recommended Sweetwater to use instead of the good or excellent formula they were using is way more in depth. For example, this rates the secretaries on a scale of 1-5 on different skills such as communication, organizational know-how, and achieving business results. Within each of these categories, the employer has a chance to write in their own words how the secretaries are excelling in these categories or how they can improve on them. You have to go in with the mindset that every employee is excellent at what they do and just help them develop ways to do their job more effectively. However, there should be some strong training sessions for administrators and secretary. This training should help them understand the new system. Also, since all secretaries used to receive the same salary increase, the maximum increase should be lowered to an amount which can be given to all secretaries while staying within budget. 2. Do you think that Vice President Winchester would be better off dropping graphic rating forms, substituting instead one of the other techniques discussed in this chapter, such as a ranking...

...Do you think that the experts ‘recommendations will be sufficient to get most of the administrators to fill out the rating forms properly? Why? Why not? What additional actions (if any) do you think will be necessary? I don’t feel that the experts’ recommendations will be enough to get most of the administrators to fill out the rating forms properly. The managers would be pleased with the recommendation to withdraw Mr. Winchester’s forced ranking system but, would definitely challenge the idea of not tying salary increases to appraisal forms because it’s what they’ve always done (Dessler 2011). Before making this type of changes both management and employees should be trained so they could fully understand the new system. Do you think that Vice President Winchester would be better off dropping graphic rating forms, substituting instead one of the other techniques we discussed in this chapter, such as a ranking method? Why? I don’t think it’s a good idea to stop using it all at once since the secretaries got so upset they were picketing. They could use the current method but, more efficiently. The ranking method is not as simple as the graphic forms. In some cases it could cause disagreements among employees (Dessler 2011). What performance appraisal system would you develop for the secretaries if you were Rob Winchester? Defend your answer. The performance appraisal system that I would develop for the secretaries is the Graphic Rating Scale method. It is the simplest...

...Appraising the Secretaries at Sweetwater U 1. The recommendations would encourage administrators to fill out the forms correctly. Although, it is important to consider that the administrators might be biased and convinced to rate “excellent”. Incorporating a more detailed form and not binding the performance ratings to salary increases would allow the managers to feel more freely about rating secretaries accurately. It would be necessary to have some sort of strong training sessions for both the administrators and secretaries to help them understand the new system. It would be advisable to lower the maximum increase to an amount that could be given to all secretaries while staying with the budget because the secretaries all received the same salary increases and were all happy with that originally. 2. Yes because using graphic forms have several issues, which includes, halo effect, unclear standards, central tendencies, leniency, and bias opinions. Other substitute methods could definitely be considered. The ranking method is much better in order to retrieve desired results. Alternation ranking methods avoids central tendencies. A BARS system may be his next best option but it could potentially be more costly to develop if the clerical staff has positions that are different. 3. The purpose of a performance appraisal system is to develop good performance from employees and to also raise production. A performance appraisal system allows employees to see...

...14. The Defendant appealed to the Supreme Court of Canada where the issue was whether the lower courts erred in not granting standing to bring a s.8 challenge and in holding that Marakah had no reasonable expectation of privacy in the messages sent to Winchester (8). a. Majority Decision of the Supreme Court 15. The majority of the Supreme Court agreed with the lower courts in deciding that Marakah had a direct interest and a subjective expectation of privacy in the text messages he sent to Winchester (21-23). However, they added that the subject matter of the search was the ‘electronic conversation’ between Marakah and Winchester (17). 16. Furthermore, they reasoned that control was only one determining factor in assessing the objectively reasonable expectation of privacy, and that the lower court should not only have applied it to the device, but also to the electronic conversation (44). They held that Marakah’s subjective expectation of privacy in the text messages in Winchester’s phone was objectively reasonable, and that Marakah has standing under s.8 of the Charter (54-55). They also held that the evidence in Winchester’s phone should be excluded under s.24(2) to prevent bringing the administration of justice into disrepute (73). - In making this decision, the Court conducted the Grant Analysis and reasoned that first, the breach was in fact a serious violation, (66), second, Marakah’s Charter protected rights were violated because he had a reasonable expectation of...

...Krikorian, and I am the mayor of this great town of Sweetwater Florida. Today we are celebrating one hundred great years off our town’s rich history. Our city comes from very humble beginnings, but has grown to be an amazing place. Although the great City of Sweetwater was officially started in 1941 when it was incorporated into Miami-Dade County, the history of our magnificent city goes further back into the 1920s. This area that we currently know and love as Sweetwater was originally land purchased by the Miami-Pittsburgh Land Company back in the early 1920s during the Florida land boom. The Miami-Pittsburg Land Corporation were the first people to plot out land for what they called the Sweetwater Groves, but due to the 1926 Hurricane and the bust of the South Florida real estate put an end to the project. This area is called Sweetwater because it was name after the water from the Everglades which is said to have a sweet taste when you drink it....

...What Am I Worth? DeVry University What Am I Worth? There is a balancing act that has to happen periodically in the work place in order for the employees to be happy and fairly compensated and for a business to stay afloat. In the application case: “Appraising the Secretaries at Sweetwater U” the balance was in danger of being tipped when the university realized that there was a bias that was occurring during annual job performance appraisals. Because these appraisals were directly tied to annual income raises, these biases proved to be very costly to the university since every appraisal led to a maximized income raise for every secretary at Sweetwater U. In this scenario, the secretaries at Sweetwater U were happy but the University’s budget was not. After newly appointed Vice President for administrative affairs Rob Winchester met with his experts at Sweetwater U, they presented him with two ideas that were viable ideas but in my opinion, insufficient. The first recommendation that Winchester’s experts gave was to change the rating form that was being used by the administrators to appraise their secretaries. The second idea that was presented to Vice President Winchester was to sever the tie which directly linked the secretaries’ rating forms to their annual income raises. One agreeable aspect to changing the rating form would allow an unbiased rating system to be developed so that the rating form would have some form of value with consideration to the...

...Over the last couple weeks at Sweetwater High School the principal Dr.Ramon Del Rosario brought forth an idea that all student wear a school uniform. He says they will have great effects on the students and their grades. the school uniform will consist of a grey polo shirt and khaki pants. He says they are cheap and easy to find and they will prevent gang violence. In the last couple of days Dr. Ramon Del Rosario was talking to the school board and got his idea approved. They decided that starting the next semester they want every student in a uniform and if the students are defiant and don’t wear it there will be disciplinary action taken by the administrators. Our principle will give a speech at the next assembly telling all you students the new news about the uniforms. He will be telling you guys that he has informed all the nearby stores that they will need to stock up on grey polo shirts and khaki pants and to put them on sale so that every student at Sweetwater can go buy their uniforms for the new semester. On the other hand when all of you guys are in your new uniforms there will be less gang violence which will bring a better representation to our school. If the gang members that were causing problems to all the other student stop coming to school then its better for everyone else because they can focus on their school work without being terrified of being hurt by a gang member or a bad student that has bad grades and goes to school to mess with...

...What It Takes To Be A DJ Being a DJ is not as easy as some may think. There are people out there who dismiss being a DJ as just playing one record after another, which is easy to say if one has never witnessed a DJ in action or even tried it themselves. Yes, it may appear to be easy to the untrained eye, but that’s mainly due to the fact that so many professional DJs make it look like a walk in the park. It’s become second nature to them. Imagine having to play for at least an hour to an expectant audience, an audience that has paid good money to have a good time, and being able to give that audience a good time, using just two decks, a mixer, and music that the DJ has chosen, is quite a skill (Barnes). Few DJs are able to support themselves financially with their DJing alone, and on top of that, they have to spend a lot of time and money on their craft. Of course, there are the obvious pluses; the awe-factor, the parties, the party-boys and girls, the ass-kissing. But there is more to it than that. This is an artform, an expression, a way of life (kbein). Many people dream of becoming a DJ, but to really be a DJ, one must buy the right equipment to handle the big-beat tunes. The first thing a DJ needs to do is to determine the type of gear he wishes to use. Building ones first DJ setup can be a difficult task if the person does not know which equipment to buy. There are four typical DJ setups: 1) computer only; it can be very difficult to DJ with only a computer because the...
