...Potential Careers in Sports Management Esther Cole University of Incarnate Word This is my very first course in sports management and I have learned that there are many paths I could take once I graduate. Right now it is too early to feel passionate about any one career path. I will discuss various careers in sports management and I how feel about them now as I am just starting out. I hope to look back at this paper when I am finished and see if my views and opinions have changed. The Number of students who decide to get a MBA in sports management has grown significantly since the recession. A Ba in sports management was not producing jobs that many hopeful students thought it would. The sports industry was not immune to the recession like many people thought. Some people thought that the sports business would never feel the effects of the recession but they were wrong. Both the NBA and the NFL cut jobs during the recession and this caused a ripple effect with new graduates. They were forced to take low paying jobs working in the industry but as ticket sellers or working in the concessions. Still others who felt there was no other option took unpaid internships in the hope of landing a job afterward (Belson, 2009). Sports management degrees date back to the 1970’s with a rocky start. The degree was not seen as legitimate, “many academics mocked them for teaching how to mix Gatorade” (Wecker, 2011). The program has come a long way and has advanced into a masters level and...

...NEW GREEN September 19, 2015 Dr. James Case I USA Today K90000787 1 Case 1- USA Today Kimberley Hutchinson K90000787 INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT Current Marketing Objectives, Strategy and Performance Gannett Co., Inc. began USA Today in 1982 by filling a gap in the newspaper industry. Gannett wanted their paper to provide more news about more subjects in a short time frame. The two trends they took advantage of were catering to adults who had short attention spans and who were nurtured on television. These consumers wanted different information from their newspapers. The readers wanted quick, clear, fact-filled stories that were arranged with subheads, breakouts, informational graphics and that were easy to read. This is what Gannett delivered with USA Today. While the readers’ wants have differed over the years, the paper has kept up. In 1994, the paper upgraded to cover more serious topics and added reader-opinion polls and hot-line numbers. The readers were able to call the lines to obtain additional information on topics they were interested in. In 1995, there was a lull in readership; they began to see the need for more technological data required by consumers. USAToday.com was born and met that need. USA Today and USAToday.com have 5.3 million daily readers with $1.8 million paid subscriptions. Today, USA Today has the largest print circulation with over 1.8 million copies daily and 3.2 million daily readers. They also have the highest volume...

Many professionals in sports training to achieve better performances have applied mental imagery as a technique. This idea has been there in sports for many years, however, it is recently being incorporated into sports training. As a psychological process intended to improve performance of athletes, it has presented positive results while other athletes have reported negative results from the visualization process. This paper aims to unearth whether indeed imagery is research founded or just a matter of popular psychology. Many researches that have been carried out by various experts explicitly indicate that the visualization concept is beneficial to sports. Mental imagery as a visualization technique has successfully aided to improve the performance of athletes. Studies conducted on imagery during the twentieth century have had inconsistent results due factors such as unavailability of reliable controls and subjects. However, recent studies on mental imagery have had sufficient evidence to suggest that it can improve performance of various sports. Finke carried out a meta-analytic research of sixty studies aimed at examining effect of mental practice on control conditions. The results from average effect sizes indicated that the practice of imagery influence performance more than without...

...Abstract This paper explores the origin of wire services, major new agencies providing those services, and the evolution of the service over its history. Wire services are necessary for the facilitation of news internationally. The methods of providing news from a wire service, or news agency, to other newspaper, periodical, radio, television, or other communication outlet has evolved throughout history. This paper explores the humble beginnings of wire services and highlights several of the major wire service providers, including Reuters, The Associated Press (AP), United Press International, Agence France Presse (AFP), and Bloomberg. The Evolution of Wire Services: Then and Now Wire services are integral components of international communication. Also referred to as a news agency, a wire service is an organization “that sends out syndicated news copy to subscribers by wire or by satellite transmission (Mish, 1997).” With origins dating back to the early 1850s (McPhail, 2010), wire services have not always conducted communication transfers with advanced technology like satellite transmissions. From telegraphy to teleprinters to radio, the process of getting news from a wire service to its dependent news and other providers has evolved substantially throughout the years. The conception and continued modernization of wire services can be attributed to various agency titans, including Reuters, The Associated Press (AP), United Press International, Agence France Presse (AFP)...

...basketball players improve their shooting. Problem/Purpose/Engineering Goals We are trying to create a technology. The purpose for doing this is that when people are practicing basketball, unless they want to create a new diagram every single time on paper and track where they shot from and whether or not they made the shot, they don’t receive feedback on their shooting percentage or anything like that. There is a mental part to playing basketball, and if someone knows that he is consistently improving his shot every day, then he will be more confident while playing and an overall better player. Our project hopes to make the shot tracking process easier and less time consuming. Background There’s always room to improve in basketball so our objective is to create a tool that will help optimize the rate of development of one’s shooting skill. While this technology already currently exists, we are trying to improve upon it to build a more efficient implementation while making sure that it does not provide obstructions to progress. We will do this by making sure our device isn’t bulky and doesn’t distract the shooter, and we will also provide more detailed shot analytics. Basketball is an internationally known sport with a very large following in the National Basketball Association and...

...Communication and Collaboration Paper Kimberly Johnson Gen.200/BSB918 09/12/2011 Thomas Volmar Communication and Collaboration Communication and Collaboration among individuals of different learning styles and personalities is important not only in a professional environment but also in society. Learning styles differ from person to person. Different learning styles are often the result among individuals with different types of each. Different personality styles thrown together can either clash or compliment. Personality is the first thing one person notices about another when communicating with them and learning the different strengths about each personality type can help to improve communication and collaboration. There are three different learning and personality styles that I will talk about. Verbal/Linguistic “Verbal Linguistic is the ability to communicate through language, listening, reading, writing, and speaking” (Keys to College Studying Chapt. 2). In order to communicate and collaborate effectively each team member must use their strengths to make up for another’s weakness. Those with Verbal Linguistic strengths can effectively communicate in writing and can also use persuasion. Teachers can also help their students by having them keep journals, play word games, and use discussion in the class room. Interpersonal “Interpersonal is the ability to relate to others, noticing their moods, motivations, feelings, social activity...

...March 24, 2015 Case Study #1 Volkswagen Group Prepared By: Team 2 Alejandra Alvarez Amanda Kilroy Ryan Musante Bastian Steppin The Volkswagen Group (VW), based in Wolfsburg, Germany, is one of the largest automakers in the world. Comprised of twelve different brands, the automaker maintains a global presence, with more than 100 factories across Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Africa. The company sells its cars in 153 countries. As the world’s 8th largest employer, it has 592,586 workers who produce close to 41,000 vehicles every weekday. Volkswagen boasts many notable strengths, such as strong brand identity (in all 12 of the their brands), dedication to creating customer satisfaction, and excellence in design and engineering. The secret to their success, however, truly lies in their avid dedication to improving efficiency. As efficiency increases, production volume rises, and costs shrink. Throughout their supply chain there have been countless efforts, both large and small, to improve processes, speed up, and lower costs for virtually all tasks that are required to put vehicles into the hands of customers worldwide. Corporate Structure Volkswagen’s corporate structure appears to violate the conventional wisdom of the automotive industry. Firstly, they have a large assortment of brands, each running as its own entity. Each has its own board of directors, and its own annual reports. The brands cater to different markets, either in terms...
