Metal Whistles in Elementary School Toy Collection
Recently, it has been discovered that the toy collection that is planned to be sent at week’s end to elementary schools in South America, did not pass U.S. satisfactory limits for children ages 7 and younger due to the metal whistle included in the toy collection containing small traces of lead.
Listed below are three possible alternatives that have been identified to address the whistle problem. 1. Replace the metal whistle with a plastic whistle. 2. Find an alternative toy, i.e. flash cards, rubber ball, stickers to replace the metal whistle. 3. Remove the metal whistle from the toy collection.
The Utilitarian Method was used for selecting the alternatives, as this method evaluates an act in the nomenclatures of consequences or outcomes. It endeavors to accomplish the maximum good for the maximum amount while producing the smallest amount of damage or averting the maximum amount of anguish. It embraces that every person’s concern should be measured equally when making the decision. For any group of alternatives it would assess the most ethical alternative as the alternative which generates the greatest equilibrium of gains over damage for the most stakeholders. Outcomes maybe measured in expressions such as financial gain or loss, or the short term and long term consequence of the act. A. Replace the metal whistle with a plastic whistle.
Advantages: Plastic whistles do not contain metal, and therefore would not be contaminated with levels of lead. The cost for plastic whistles are less than the cost of metal ones. Disadvantages: Plastic whistles tend to break easily because of the plastic material which makes it weak and flimsy.
Financial Considerations: Replacing the metal whistle with a plastic whistle will be most cost effective for the reason stated previously, the cost of plastic is less than the cost for metal.
Ethical Considerations: Would it be morally responsible for the company not to replace the metal whistles? Would this act be fair and just?

B. Find an alternative item to replace the metal whistle.
Advantage: There is an eminent possibility that the company will in the short and long run from the higher sales revenue. Parents will be happy because their children will not be getting a toy that could make them ill.
Disadvantage: Parents or the media may uncover the truth about the small traces of lead contained in the metal whistle which will injure the company’s character. Society will bear the cost of high healthcare from the long term effect of sick children.
Financial Considerations: An alternative item may be more costly than the metal whistle. The company may have to pay a large amount of money to pay for medical expenses of sick children.
Legal Considerations: Would not replacing the metal whistle be illegal because of the small traces of lead that could potentially make children sick? Does the company have the legal right not to replace or remove the metal whistles?
Ethical Considerations: Would not removing or replacing the metal whistles be morally acceptable? Would not removing or replacing the metal whistles be fair to the elementary children? C. Advantages: By simply removing the website, no additional cost would be incurred by finding an option to replace the metal whistle. It would take less time to get rid of the metal whistle and repackage than to get rid of the metal whistle, insert a replacement toy, and then repackage.
Disadvantages: The elementary school toy collection would be short by one toy.
Financial Considerations: No additional monies would have to be spent on replacing the metal whistle with an alternate toy.
Legal Considerations: Will taking out the metal whistle completely break any contracts that exists because the toy collection is required to have “x” amount of toys?
Ethical Considerations: Would removing the metal whistle and not disclosing the reason for removing, would it be fair and just?
The suggested recommendation would be to remove the metal whistle and to replace with a lower cost plastic whistle. By removing the metal whistle and replacing with a plastic one is both beneficial to the company as well as to the customer. The plastic whistles are cost effective for the company, and the customer will not have to worry about children getting sick from the small traces of lead contained in the metal whistles. This recommendation ensures that all individuals involved interests are considered. It assesses the alternatives and provides the best net benefit to all who are involved.
Customer relationships will be deeply impacted by this alternative. The customer will value the fact that the company has taken an interest in their wellbeing by replacing a potentially dangerous toy with a safe and reliable one. With this value, the company will earn a sense of trust with the customer, in turn higher sales and revenue for the elementary toy collection.
Social responsibility is how the company accomplishes its actions to converge its broader responsibilities to the environment and society by evading behaviors which may be harmful. The company must certify that tactical decisions are attained while taking into account consideration conceivable influence on the stakeholders. By being socially responsible company, the company considers stakeholders similarly. Broader perceptions also have to be measured in terms of environmental and social impression of scheduled activities. The company is being socially responsible by finding the traces of lead in the metal whistle before it became both dangerous and harmful to society.
There are two actions that the company can execute to confirm that ethical decision making ensues on all ranks within the company. These are to investigate the ethical environment and put precautions in place and to openly pledge to be an ethical company. 1. Investigate The Ethical Environment. Contemplate piloting an official valuation of the company’s culture from the standpoint of boldness, insights, morals, and principles of demeanor, burdens to compel misbehavior, interactions, jeopardies and weaknesses. Pay specific consideration to company principles and how they have been adopted by the Board, senior management, employees in all departments as well as important shareholders. 2. Openly Pledge To Be An Ethical Company. Companies that are honest about their ethical principles and behavior seem to be more reliable than those who remain quit. The company should openly display their idea, morals and codes of conduct on the internet for unrestricted viewing.
A company’s code of ethics is an established list of guidelines that outline and administer ethics and procedures in a business setting (What Are The Benefits of A Code of Ethics, 2014). Ethical conduct is advantageous for the company because it defends the welfare of the company and the welfare of any individual who comes into interaction with the company. An additional benefit of a code of ethics is trust. Guidelines encourage trust, particularly when they are obeyed constantly. When there is a break in the code of ethics, the issue is handled and employees can be taught from the infringement. A code of ethics must permit space for employee development and knowledge to better comprehend the code of ethics, but every employee must attempt to do their best to adhere to the rules and regulations (What Are The Benefits of A Code of Ethics, 2014).
Toys R Us delights itself on an established Code of Conduct platform. Through time, they have moved work in plants to increase outside rudimentary agreement, qualified management team to integrate employee’s opinions, and help plant administration construct volume. They contain conservational and community working environments in their valuations, and go beyond plant barriers to evaluate whether employees are capable of meeting their basic needs. Following are three components from the Toys R Us Code of Conduct that are important to include in the development of the Code of Ethics for the company.
Fair Dealing: Each employee of the company must transact justly with the company’s customers, suppliers, competitors and other employees. No employee may take prejudicial gain of anyone through manipulation, concealment, abuse of privileged information, misrepresentation of material facts or any other unfair dealing practice (Toys R Us Code of Conduct, 2014).
Fraternization
The Company believes that fraternization (such as dating or other types of repetitive socializing outside the normal business relationship) between employees where there is a direct or indirect reporting relationship puts unwarranted burden on the working relationship. Even if the fraternization is guiltless, it can lead at the minimum to accusations of preference and to probable statements of harassment or maliciousness. Therefore, fraternizing where there is a direct or indirect reporting relationship is fervently opposed (Toys R Us Code of Conduct, 2014).
Acts of Harassment or Discrimination
The company has an established procedure alongside any actions of harassment and discrimination due to a person’s race, religion, national origin, gender, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, etc. (Toys R Us Code of Conduct, 2014) . The company trusts that all persons have a right to work in a relaxed atmosphere free from harassment and discrimination and that harassment or discrimination of any kind is a method of misconduct that emasculates the integrity of the employment relationship (Toys R Us Code of Conduct, 2014).
