TCP/IP This week’s paper will provide an overview into the world of the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Internet Protocol (IP), and how they are used together in business and telecommunications. Frist, the current TCP/IP offerings as, as they apply to the OSI model, will be discussed. Second, the future of TCP/IP will be discussed with relevant research support as well as recommendations for new software and equipment. Finally, an overview of different methods for reducing network congestion through the use of equipment, software and multiplexing will be given.
Current Offerings of TCP/IP In business, the OSI and TCP/IP have been the standard method of network classification for many years. The Open Systems Interconnect Model (OSI) can be thought of as an idea or guideline, while TCP/IP more closely relates to reality. Both models do mostly the same thing, but TCP/IP is a more efficient method, and usually matches up directly with the network. Because OSI is more of an idea, it is not utilized as much as TCP/IP. With the creation of smart switches and other advanced network equipment and functions, more layers can be combined and a more streamlined process can be gained. Because of this, TCP/IP is the most used model in modern networks, while OSI is used for describing network activity.

Improving TCP/IP
As TCP/IP ages and new technology comes about, there is a need to upgrade software and hardware to keep up with the demands of modern networking. Below we will discuss the possibilities to improve the operations using TCP/IP.
Software Upgrades Software upgrades for TCP/IP will be an integral part of ensuring that networks will be efficient and secure. There are many choices for software to improve TCP/IP functionality. Some of these offerings are in the form of software services provided offsite by an outside company. Other options include new VSE technology from Barnard Software (Barnard, n.d.) that allow enhanced features such as separate IPv4 and IPv6 stacks on the same system. Some programs provide an all-encompassing improvement such as the Green Hills TCP/IP Stack (Web, n.d.) which provides improvements to traffic flow, security, routing, and many more protocols than standard TCP/IP stacks. The upgrades to improve TCP/IP via software are out there, but many have large price tags and require extensive knowledge to implement.
Equipment Upgrades Upgrading TCP/IP with hardware may be more desirable than software, but the price tag on new equipment can be a deterrent to financially concerned businesses. Equipment is always evolving with more features and capabilities. When purchasing equipment, a business needs to ensure that the piece of equipment they are looking for will be upgradeable. Nobody likes buying an expensive new piece and then seeing a new version come out a day later. A piece of equipment that can significantly improve TCP/IP operations is the IP Core. Developed by Hitech Global, this piece of equipment is capable of providing features such as improved speeds, MAC and IP address tracking, and modular design for future upgrades. The IP core is a physical board that incorporates many of the features of software along with the potential of an upgradeable board. (IPCORE, n.d.). Finally, as web based smart switches gain popularity, TCP/IP network operations will likely evolve with new features accessible through the browser based interface.
Reducing Congestion As technology evolves and millions of people a day get connected, there is a concern for keeping the world’s networks running smoothly. In a world where time is money, the speed of a network is of critical importance. A network becomes congested as packets are transmitted and retransmitted beyond the load limit for an individual node. This can cause traffic to slow or stop completely as the packet loss rises. There are methods used through software, hardware, and multiplexing that can help avoid and reduce congestion. These will be given an overview below.
Software
Software solutions for network congestion include certain functions of TCP/IP, queue management, algorithms, and QoS adjustments. For large networks, support built into software may not be enough i.e. Solely TCP or QoS algorithms. A variety of different algorithms and protocols should be used for decongesting the network. An example could be the combination or TCP and other appropriate protocols, Queue management, and a network scheduler. These pieces would need to be fine-tuned for different traffic levels.
Hardware
Hardware solutions to network congestion can be expensive. Adding bandwidth is often costly, but may be necessary if slowdowns are common. If equipment is too far behind the current technology, expect to upgrade it up to standard. This may not solve all the network congestion issues, but out of date equipment is a major factor. In some cases, network congestion may be caused by not having enough equipment to handle the load. As a network grows, the capacity to support the network’s traffic also needs to grow, or congestion will become a major problem.

Multiplexing
Multiplexing does not solve all of the network congestion problems, but it is a step in the right direction. Multiplexing involves taking multiple data streams, be they analog or digital, and combining them onto a single signal. This has definite some definite benefits for a network since a larger amount of data can be sent in the same space as a previous smaller amount. Multiplexing can be done through multiple methods and even through optical fiber. This makes this method ideal for managing network congestion.
Conclusion
The OSI and TCP/IP models are an important part of modern networking. TCP/IP is used in most networks today with large success. OSI is and will continue to be an effective model to describe network traffic.
Upgrades through software and hardware are an important part of keeping TCP/IP based network running smooth. Though costly, these upgrades are a necessary part of staying connected in the technologically evolving business world.
Networks congestion will always be a problem in networks. Managed properly with the right equipment, network congestion can be remedied with software, hardware, and even multiplexing methods.
