The Biggest Change of My Life

Author’s Note:
This paper was prepared for English Composition, ENG 102-409, taught by Corinne Rhein. As we grow up, we try to prepare ourselves for the future by making goals for ourselves and by having dreams of what we want our life to be; I always wanted to become a mother. I just never imagined being stared in the face with the reality of motherhood at a young age. I was 18 when I found out I was pregnant. Although I was very nervous I knew this was what I was supposed to do with my life. Fast forward to almost three years later, many aspects of my life has changed by having a child but I believe the aspects that have changed the most have been my spirituality, my mentality and my physical appearance.
Spirituality was the first part of me to change during my transition into motherhood. I have always had a strong spiritual background- catholic school from kindergarten to second grade, night time religion classes from third to eighth grade, church every Sunday, praying with my family, etc. -but my belief in God wasn’t nearly as strong as it is now. I was in the hospital ready to give birth when my spirituality was brought to a higher level than it ever was. I recited the saying “this too shall pass” during times that I didn’t think I could take anymore. My spirituality was also stronger when I was told that I had to go in for an emergency cesarean section, where I had my 9lb 12oz healthy baby boy and hemorrhaged, requiring many transfusions and extra surgery. This trying moment in my life reminded me to bring back my belief in God and in prayer. Therefore, making my spirituality the first change to happen during my first moments of motherhood.
The next part of me to change when I became a mother was my mentality. Before I had my son I was more worried about hanging out with friends and going out to do things rather than staying home with my family. Now I would much rather stay home with my son than go out with other people. My mentality has also changed because after my son was born I lost most of my friends, so I don’t worry too much anymore about friends. I am more worried about finishing college and reaching the personal goals I set for myself, whether they are short term or long term goals.
The last and most apparent change in me was my physical appearance. I used to play sports and have a very fit body, I used to get more than enough sleep to keep me well enough for the next day. I would also make sure that I had the newest clothes and shoes and always had my hair done. Since I became pregnant I have bags under my eyes from not sleeping enough, stretch marks and I wear a size bigger pants than I used to. However, I am a lot more comfortable with my physical appearance than I used to be before I had my son.
All in all, motherhood is a part of life that not everyone will experience, but I have had the pleasure of having a child before most people. Despite many different changes that occur during this time, the ones that changed the most were my spirituality, my mentality and my physical appearance.

...just turned fifteen years. The story is written as if it was in the past, as we can see in the text, which is seen in the first sentence“. The summer she turned fifteen”. Sam and her father lives together in Montana and every summer they take a four-day float trip down the river, which is in the text “[…]It was a four day float trip, or five if you dawdled, or three if her father had to get back to work” . Sam’s mother is dead, but the text does not say how or when. Sam goes to a boarding school and in the fall she is a sophomore, but she is seriously doubt about this, and she doesn’t know if she would go there. It was her father’s idea, and she hasn’t accepted yet, which indicates that she feels compassion for her father and she will not leave him alone. Sam is a shy girl, because when Layton compliments her teeth she gets suspicious from the praise, which is in the text “You have perfect teeth,” he said “Did you have braces?” Sam is not very confident about herself, and she does not believe it when Layton compliment her. Layton gives her attention, and she has never experienced something like this before. Sam gets more and more self-confidence throughout the process, this seen in the text, when Sam shoot with the gun and finds out that she is very good at it. Sam respect her father, which is several times in the text for example when she is not sure if her father would like her to shoot with the gun. Sam’s father had guns, but he hadn’t been hunting since her mother died...

Narrative for Lifespan Development

...counselor. Therefore I must address these experiences and deal with them emotionally. As I relive these moments I will correlate my development with the research of the following theorist: Piaget, Erikson, and Seltzer. By showing correlation of my development with their theories I will prove many of experiences as an adolescence were typical of an American teenager. Looking into the mirror I was frustrated. Why isn’t my hair pretty? Other girls wear their hair straight. Why did mine always have to be braided? Why couldn’t I have a relaxer to smooth out my curls? I shook my head in frustration and began to look for the hot comb. On my first day of middle school I was going to look pretty like everyone else. I was going to have my hair straight and laid to the side. My mother usually kept the hot comb under the kitchen sink along with the straightening grease and heat tester cloth. All these tools would help me achieve my sleek look. I carefully turned on an eye of the stove, placed the hot comb on the eye and waited. When I saw smoke arise from the comb, I took the comb off and placed it on the white cloth. If the cloth turned brown it was to hot. If it made no mark it was ready for my tresses. On this...

My Past, Present Future

...My Past, Present, and Future Hard life does not equal reason for failure, but reason for determination. Even though it may seem with so much bad you are bound to fail, with all of my bad I'm bound to succeed. I have been through a lot in life, just as every single mother but I still have what it takes for my future success. Do you have what it takes for a brighter future? The first reason I believe hard times give you determination, is because I had a hard childhood growing up. Beginning with my father abusing my mother and he was never around, a mother who was struggling to figure out who she was and what she wanted in life, and how to take care of a teenager with so many bad experiences. My father was murdered in front of me and passed in my arms when I was seven years old. My only father figures I had left were my brothers who for their own reasons couldn’t be around much. I turned to alcohol at a young age thinking it would make my life better. I felt as if I was alone. I didn’t know I had people that would be there for me. All I knew was my immediate family and my friends, which were not good influences. My mother had turned to alcohol as well and I was always home alone or with my uncle John. I never wanted to go to school; however, my uncle encouraged me to do so. I continued to attend school and did the best I thought I could. I got into skating thanks to my uncle and that is how I got rid of my stress if I had it. Uncle John always took me and my friends to the skating...

Teen Prostitution

...ALTHOUGH TEEN PROSTITUTES live in the same cities and towns as ordinary teenagers across the United States, their world is very different. They are here in our communities, and yet they are hidden from most people. They are kids, and yet the life they live separates them from most other kids and from normal teenage activities and concerns. They are criminals, but they are the victims of repeated crimes. They are family members, but most have not known a family’s love and support. They have independence, but they do not have freedom. They are earning money, but they live in poverty. They are sexually active, but without intimacy. They have escaped one set of rules but are forced to obey other, harsher ones. The world of prostitution is so separate from the ordinary world that most people rarely catch more than a glimpse of it. If they pause to wonder about a teen prostitute’s life—to ask what it’s really like, what would make a young person want to live like that, or what prostitution does to a teenager—they will not find many clues in the ordinary world. Even when the news tells of the death or the arrest of a young prostitute, it rarely explains anything about the world that young person lived in. Looking behind the surface of that separate world is one way to see how teen prostitutes really live. Even from an early age, these kids often have a different and painful experience of the world. The steps they take to avoid being hurt in the ordinary world often lead them, unknowingly...

Teenage Pregnancy

...According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute (AGI), a nonprofit agency that focuses on sexual and reproductive health research, policy analysis, and public education, teenage pregnancy has adverse consequences for the parents, the child, and society. Pregnant teens are less likely to complete high school and attend college than teenagers who avoid pregnancy. Many teenage parents live below the poverty level and rely on welfare. The children of teenage parents receive inadequate medical care, have more problems in school, and spend more time in prison than children of adult parents. The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy (NCPTP) claims that teenage childbearing costs society about $6.9 billion annually; this estimate includes welfare and food stamp benefits, medical care expenses, lost tax revenue (teenage childbearing affects the parents’ work patterns), incarceration expenses, and foster care. In an effort to reduce teenage pregnancy and the problems associated with it, policymakers have recently focused on what causes the widespread poverty and welfare dependence that teen moms experience and have attempted to devise solutions to these problems. Some social critics argue that because pregnancy limits a teenager’s opportunities for education and well-paying jobs, many are forced to accept welfare to support themselves and their children. Only 64 percent of teen moms graduate from high school or earn a general education diploma within two years after they would have...

Abortion Be Legal

...an abortion if she wants to. A woman should never feel like they are a killer because of the choice of going with abortion. Way too many teenagers are getting pregnant; not allowing them to get an abortion is saying that they have to raise their child as a single mother or in poverty (Jacob, Weisberg). Children or woman that are raped or woman who can’t cope mentally or physically with a baby should not be forced to go through the whole pregnancy. It is not their life we are talking about there are children being brought into the world and having to live in poverty and suffer. Abortion as an option would help the children being born to teenage mothers, the women that are raped not have to live with the rape their whole lives and woman that can’t mentally handle having a child another option. Part 1: Argument Abortion should be an option for any woman if they are pregnant and feel they do not want to have the baby. They may choose abortion so they don’t have to go through all of the emotions of carrying the baby to full term and then giving it up for adoption. Teenage girls that get pregnant and are not allowed to have an abortion are being set up for failure in the future. How can a child take care of another child? Teenagers that have babies drastically diminish their chances of living the “American dream” (Jacob Weisberg). Most teenagers hardly ever get any support from the dad and tend to live their lives in poverty. The chances of them going to college and getting a good...

Detour for Emmy

...amazing book. The reason being is because everything Emmy goes threw is like a detour for her from start to ending. Emmy went threw a lot from being a regular teenager to being a mother at teenager years. Emmy had to change her goals and her dreams because of on little mistake that happened. But that didn’t stop Emmy from being the best she could be. She continued her life but down another path because she had another life to take care of besides her own. Being a single parent for Emmy was hard because she didn’t have Art there to help her or be there for Rosie. This was another big detour for Emmy because she thought that Art would’ve been a little bit more of a father and help to Rosie and her but he wasn’t. Everything to Emmy was a big disappointment to her in her life but she would just take another turn to make things better for her. Life for Emmy was full decisions to make either she took one path or she took another. Usually one was the difficult path because she either had to give something up she didn’t have the help. She would always have to take the path she knew would be easier for her and would help her with Rosie. “Detour for Emmy” was a very good title for this book as I explained the things Emmy had to go threw and the detours she had to make because of a little mistake that happened that turned her whole life...

Asasd

...I’m sharing with you some of the struggles I endured as a teenager and explain how I learned from the lot of mistakes I made. Looking back and reflecting on my life I can now see that I have made many mistakes. Most of my mistakes I have made were due to my lack of patience and never listening to the older family members. If I had listened to their words of wisdom, I would have saved myself a lot of trouble and headaches. Instead of taking their advice, I took my own path and did things my way. Just like any teenagers, I want to spend my time doing crazy and stupid things. I hate being nagged by my parents. They always want me to clean the house, wash dishes, study and all the crazy stuffs I hate. They always said that “This is for your own good” and I got so irritated every time I hear those words. As a teenager, I want to do things on my own. I want to enjoy life. Play arcade games, hang-out with friends, go somewhere. It seemed as if the more I did not listen, the deeper the hole I dug myself. I remember my mother told me “What goes around comes around.” I started dating a lot of girls around when I turned thirteen. I did not take into consideration the feelings of the girls that I talked to at all. I met a girl and fell in love with her but she didn’t feel the same way about me as I felt as I felt about her. My heart was broken and all I could think about was the lecture I received from my mother about karma. And now, I’m so in love with a girl whom I think...

...courage, compassionate, and an inspirational young man. Dave tells his story when he was at the age of eighteen in this series. Dave not only wrote this novel but many more. I believe Dave and I share some of the same characteristics according to his book. Dave and I are both people who have a lot of compassion and have reasons to inspire people to go on with their lives. Dave has compassion towards his writings, not only does he has compassion but you can also read his writings and tell he loves what he does. In my opinion Dave has the power to inspire many teenagers or even adults to keep moving forward and not give up. As for myself, I find myself somewhat similar to Dave, although I didn’t experience the same obstacles as him, I have compassion towards writing and helping teens, like myself, through situations that they believe have no escape. * Part 2 A scene from the novel, “The Privilege of Youth: A Teenagers Story,” that really affected me was when he retells his heartbreaking childhood. The author describes his childhood as bleak and pessimistic. The author inputs simple but yet complex sentences to describe his life as a child. For Example, in chapter 2 page 15 middle of the second paragraph Dave states, “I was no longer an animal existing in a darkened basement/ garage, but a real person.” I believe this is the perfect sentence to show you that Dave not only does his have simple sentences but also involves the use of imagery and figurative language. Dave adopts...

Vernissage Essay

...Vernissage essay Have you ever peeped on your parents? Well Alex has. And he isn’t just peeping. He describes every little thing. Maybe that’s just how it is, to be a child, or maybe that is the stage where a child wants to show, that he turns into a teenager. Describing his banana sandwich as baby food normally means child food aren’t good enough for Alex. He wants to be a grown up and eat grown up food. Making projects about earthworms in Nature class is also one of the childish struggles, you have to go through, if your name is Alex. He even needs to have a babysitter for one single night, while his parents are out for something called a vernissage. All this means Alex hasn’t turned into a teenager yet, but he really wants to. It seems normally for the parents to contact a babysitter, like it happens pretty often. It means that his parents, often are out for something. But that’s not the real problem.
