...Chapter 12. & YOUTH INFORMATION and COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES(ICT) The definitions and ideas applied to information and communication technologies and the modern media culture are examined in the beginning of this chapter. The characterizations of media culture are then explored from the perspective of young people, and the links between youth and ICT are investigated. The dominant cultural logic with regard to ICT is outlined, and different forms of the digital divide are presented. Some global aspects of ICT use among youth are reviewed, using both primary and secondary sources. New forms of youth socialization brought about by the emergence of ICT are examined, and the chapter concludes with a set of recommendations. INTRODUCTION Young people today live in a world characterized by dramatic cultural, economic, social and educational differences; individual circumstances depend largely on where a person is born and raised. More than 800 million adults (two-thirds of them women) still lack basic literacy skills; at the other end of the spectrum, the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) is skyrocketing. Notwithstanding the immense diversity in living environments, an unprecedented and unifying global media culture has developed that challenges and often surpasses such traditional forms of socialization as family and school. This complex cultural situation—in which young people are struggling to find direction in their lives or simply to survive, to improve...

...socialization for children and young adults today are family, peer groups, mass media and school. I say this because it is where children and young adults socialize. The family is the main agent of socialization because children and young adults spend the most time with their families and first learn values from their families. Families come in different sizes - parents (married, single, or divorced), grandparents and extended family and this affects children. Families also just don’t socialize their children within the walls of their home. Parents teach values that children and young adults will have for their entire life along with gender roles. Socialization is affected by social times – for example, 50 years ago children were spanked with a wooden spoon for misbehavior but today, for many, it is considered child abuse. Other family factors such as race, social class, wealth, also affect the socialization of children and young adults (Openstax). Peer groups are also agents for socialization for children and young adults. Peer groups are made up of individuals about the same age and have similar social characteristics such as participating in sports, religion, or similar activities. In young adults, acceptance by their peer group is very important to them, which is why peer groups are so influential on young adults. Because young adults want to be like their peers, they want to become what they think their peers want them to be. Often there is conflict between what young adults want...

...did for hime the shool project and refused to pay now The Effect of Technology on the Young Generation Name University In today`s world, the development of the younger generation is greatly affected by digitization. Technology changes the experience of childhood not only socially but also in both economical and cultural aspects. Technology has the greatest influence on the world today, and we are constantly surrounded by it and life will almost be impossible without it (Davies, 2010). In the below summary, I have outlined briefly how the media has changed the lives of the young generation: The article basically outlines the social, economic and cultural changes that have come about due to digitization. The media is so much engrossed in our lives that it would be impossible for our young generation to survive in its absence. The internet, video and television dictate the morals, cultures and characters the young pick up as they grow up. There are some economic aspects of change brought about by the digital age. In today’s era, Children seem to be staying younger longer. This creates financial dependence which is worsened by the stagnating youth labor market and consequently leading to delayed entrance into adulthood. In addition, there has been tremendous rise in the spending power. The main concern here is not only on the money young people spend but their influence on family decision concerning expenditure and...

...Technologies: Fueling Childhood Obesity Epidemic Name ENG 122 Instructor June 20, 2011 Technologies: Fueling Childhood Obesity Epidemic Nintendo DS, Wii, Play Station, X-Box 360, or computers what kid doesn’t love them right? How many owners of these devices suffer from obesity? Obesity now affects 20% of U.S. children, according to the National Center for Health statistics, a U.S. government agency. Obesity occurs when an individual takes in more calories in the form of food than he or she burns for energy. With recent popularity in new technologies, children are not exercising as much as they did in the past, and childhood obesity is becoming a wide spread epidemic in today’s society. Childhood obesity is an ever growing struggle amongst our society today. Most health experts believe childhood obesity is the result of a combination of genetic, environmental and psychological factors. Environment factors that contribute to childhood obesity include activity levels, diets, and eating habits. These factors can easily be maintained, or improved in a young individual’s routine with the help of the peers around them. Parents are the ones who should be acting as positive role models for their children. If an obese child has and obese parent they may think that it is just genetic, but in fact it could be due to poor eating habits ( consumption of excessive amounts of calories), or lack of physical activities. Recent studies show that on average kids among...

...of Mass Media on Adolescents Kelsey Wyatt Western Governors University Abstract This Paper contents reviews of several studies conducted on the effects of mass media on children and adolescents. Most of the research suggests that over exposure and unsupervised use of mass media outlets can alter the psychological development of children, as well as create anxieties in adolescents. All of the researched reviewed examines the effects of all media other than book content. Research has shown that consuming too much mass media at a young age can alter the social and psychological structure of adolescents. Mass media can even desensitize youth to unhealthy behavior and effect their education. One of the more noticeable changes in the 21st century has been the growing media consumption, availability and influence. A major consequence of this growing influence is the negative effect it can have on a children’s well-being. Parents no longer have to worry about the influence of “bad” friends but the “virtual” bad influence readily at the fingertips of their children. According to the U.S. census over 80% of adolescents own at least one form of media technology (Comer 2008). The use of this technology is increasing every year with text messages and social networking being an easy access to both youths and adults. A survey was conducted in 2010 by the Kaiser Family Foundation on daily media usage. The survey found that children 8 to 18 logged an average of 6 hour media usage per...

...Entertainment for children Introduction In this essay paper I have given a critical analysis on entertainment content designed for children especially those under the age of 18 and its impact on them. In fact, media’s presence has been ubiquitous in the children’s lives hence being the prolific contributor of all forms of teenage problems. Some of the online web sites entails of information for children that may be destructive if not well guided by their parents. Parental guidance is very much important especially for these young people because without their intervention, the children’s future will be no more (Knobloch 123). Increasing technology has been a nightmare in most developed states in the world such as the United States whereby children have got six hours daily with media. It has been realized that children’s media consumption contributes to high degree of negativity than the otherwise. The following may serve as one of the web site for children entertainment. Children and television The television as one of the viewing sites is very much important towards the child’s cognitive development and lots of learning in different fields such as cultures, geography among many others. ...is disruptive of the reproduction of traditional cultural practices, from modes of dress to language, aesthetics and ideologies. From Japanese punk to Australian hip hop, youth subcultures are seen as being implicitly rebellious, born as much from a desire to reject the generation that went before them, as from an identification with what they have become. Exactly how accurate this widespread impression may be is difficult to assess. What is certain, however, is that the age of globalization, more than any other age before it, is an age that has both exerted great effects upon, and been greatly affected by, young people. Adolescents undergo the process of identity formation as one of their foremost development challenges. This paper addresses what role the mass media play in this process. One avenue of exploration would be to examine how the media can impact the adolescent’s perceptions of social reality, which could lead to the internalization of certain attitudes as the adolescent struggles to develop a stable core repertoire of attitudes, beliefs and values. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY GLOBALIZATION Globalization, which also has been called global...

...the world of technology has advanced considerably, namely the media. First there was the telegraph, then the radio, the newspaper, magazines, the television, and finally the internet. Today’s society is one that depends on technological communication to keep up with school, work, and relationships. Most people wake up and read the newspaper or watch the news, then spread the knowledge they learned with family, friends, and coworkers. Most of our decisions are based on the things we see and hear in the media. We rely on the media to get the current news and facts about what is important and what we should be aware of. We put our trust in the media as an authority to give us news, entertainment and education. However, the influence of mass media on children and teenagers and society is such a widespread and controversial issue that we should be aware of it. Magazines and television constantly expose young people to images of violence, drugs and alcohol, sex, and celebrities. A child is reportedly exposed to about 40,000 ads of such criteria a year. We are taught at a young age that these things are bad; however, the media companies know that these things sell. Unfortunately, the things that sell corrupt children and teens every day. The influence of media on children and teens extends to health related issues. Television has the power to educate on nutrition and exercise. However, it can influence viewers to make poor food choices or to overeat. Excessive television viewing can...

...Is it possible for children to hurt their future selves socially by spend multiple hours a day on electronic devices in their youth? Sara, from Institute of HeartMath (2012) A website devoted to healthy living states "The fear is not only that this technology is replacing traditional children's activities but that it also may be diminishing social-interaction skills, the ability to relate to the world around them and their empathy for others." But not everyone agrees, there are as many people that promote the use of electronic devices for educational purposes with young children as there are against it. In this essay we will discuss the pro's and the cons of children and technology. The different type of media and the effects they can have on children. Some children seem to be born with the ability to adapt social interaction and the use of media devices. Being able to utilize technology to help a child advance in life by teaching them basic education is helpful in preparing a child for their future. Media devices are useful in helping to educate children, but they cannot replace the day to day social interaction a child requires early in life. It is the responsibility of the parent to make sure that a child gets enough social interaction with other children so that they learn how to relate to others in a group. It is said that a child is like a sponge they absorb information constantly so by making sure that they are absorbing the right kind of information is paramount...

...Advertising to children has existed for a long time; however what has changed is the amount of advertising and the media through which it comes. Today’s commercials are more sophisticated and pervasive, it is not that the products are good or bad, it is the notion of manipulating children to buy the product. Children are not little adults and their minds are not fully developed, still marketers are playing to their developmental vulnerability. The advertising that children are exposed to today is honed by psychologist and is enhanced by media technologies (Clay, 2000). The issues surround the impact of commercial culture and children’s well-being usually generates plumes of steam and everyone gets excited about it. However there seem to be two very hostile sides that are digging themselves in. On one side there are the evil corporations vs. the helpless children; on the other side there are the marketers that claim television is good for children. Overall this shows that children are entirely helpless and open to manipulation in such a wholesale way. So who is right? Is commercialism bad for children, or is commercial simply a part of modern democratic or capitalistic system which children are okay with. Nevertheless, the basic rule of advertising is to be truthful and not mislead the consumer. In today’s world of technology overload, younger and younger children are being exposed to product branding and marketing. Advertisers are notorious for exaggerating the benefits...

...Technology is relatively new in terms of its prevalence with children. As many parents are not as up-to-date with the latest gadgets, they tend to have little knowledge on the possible effects technology might bring. But technology, while useful, brings many negative effects to teens' lives. Parents who have technophile kids should be aware of the possible risks and dangers. Predators Informed parents know that the media blows the prevalence of online sexual predators out of proportion. However, they do exist, and they often go after easy targets, namely children. Technology such as the Internet and smart phones give both children and predators the ability to make contact with large amounts of new people. Uninformed children might feel they are making a friend but in fact are running the risk of being preyed upon. The key risk here, though, is not the predator but the lack of adult knowledge about technology and the lack of supervision parents give to their children’s online behaviors. Parents who feel bad prying into their children’s lives are ignoring the fact that most children, especially teens, are sexually curious, willing to take risks, and have poor decision-making behaviors. So, while not common, sexual predators do exist and should be something parents talk to their kids about before allowing them full reign online. Mental Health Problems Clinical coordinator at Illinois Addiction Recovery Shannon Chrismore wrote in the book, “Internet Addiction: A Handbook and Guide...

...Media and Youth In today’s world, it is hard to imagine life without technology. While there are still many adults who can remember life without the smart phone, laptop or tablet, the youth is a different story. Desensitization to violence is a subtle, almost incidental process which may occur as a result of repeated exposure to real-life violence, as well as from exposure to media violence. Emotional desensitization is evident when there is numbing or blunting of emotional reactions to events which would typically elicit a strong response. Cognitive desensitization is evident when the belief that violence is uncommon and unlikely becomes the belief that violence is mundane and inevitable. Emotional and cognitive desensitization to violence decrease the likelihood that violent behavior will be either censored or censured. (Funk, 2004 p. 3) Although violence and sex have always been a part of every culture, the youth of today are more exposed to it than before through the different types of media. The advancement of technology continues to increase as the need for constant connection to the media enhances. However, through this technology, the media has become a normalcy for today’s youth, which includes all of the negatives that go along with it. Over the years, the youth have become desensitized to all of the violence and sex in the media. Music is now and will always be the largest media influence. Unlike visual media, music is a strong mental force that also connects...

...Media Violence and Children Unit 5 Thomas Clancy – Instructor Shirley Landram Abstract This purpose of this essay is to show some of the ways television can influence children. It delves into emotions that can be experience or learned from family or TV. Understanding what young ones perceive and learn at different ages can be helpful to curb the impact that television shows have on children. Many people are concerned about the effect of media violence on children. Can something be done about this problem? Education and understanding may be a help in curbing violent tendencies. Only time will tell. Media Violence and Children This generation is being raised in a world so full of technology that often it is hard for anyone to keep track of it. As parents try to keep up with the fast-paced world, many rely on television as a babysitter. There children see violent behaviors and misconduct. Some of the programs are not good for a child since what is seen can desensitize them to abusive behavior in everyday life. Parents have an important role in helping children understand what is seen in the media.. Opting for more prosocial programs and explaining about emotions involved is something parents and caregivers can do. There have been studies done of how violence on shows affects children. It is wondered if violence on television has lasting effects. If too much violence is seen by children, they seem to become unaffected by it in later years. It teaches the child...
