...The first thing I saw when I opened my eyes was the view. Outside the window to my right was the sky, shining the most brilliant shade of blue. It was very reminiscent of a first love long gone, a mid- July cookout, and freedom. The mountain breeze was tender and felt rejuvenating, if ever so slightly. It was scenic. A paradise. My body was another dimension altogether. I felt exhausted, breathless like I’d been running without stop. The coughing and night sweats keep me up every day, further adding to my fatigue. I feel weaker by the day. I miss be able to get up and walk around. Eating the foods that I love and even simple things like running or jumping. I’m bedridden against my will and watch this beautiful weather go to waste. This kind...

... I can feel the room closing in and the air becoming short. What an idiot I was to think going into the caves was fun. It has been 10 hours since the cave in, at least that’s what I think. It’s too dark to see my watch or anything for that matter. Still, what kind of stupidity consumed me at the time of my departure to tell me not to bring a torch is beyond me. At least I bought granola bars and enough to keep me alive for a few weeks. Heck, I could survive for at least a month and in that time people could find me rotting away in here anyways. It has been four days now. My head pounds with growing intensity, and now what little vision I had is disappearing. The bad news is that my liter of water is almost gone and soon I will run out. Though, I still have my supply of granola bars, one can only eat so much and not get sick of their taste. I miss the outside world and its scent. My chances of surviving are becoming slimmer as I feel the pain in my head grow into an array of things. I am now approaching the end of my second week sitting here. Good news is that I’ve finally found water. How I found it is beyond my beliefs as I could only hear the trickle of it. However, with good news it is always followed by bad news, since I am now getting short on granola bars. I long to get out of here before I run out and have to resort to desperate measures. I can see hope though, in this dark cave, and I feel as if I will make it. It has been three weeks since the cave-...

...W hen Sarah turned 10 years old she went to the beach for the first time with her family, she was very eager. She had heard many stories of the that mighty ocean, so she cannot wait more time to see it. When they arrived to the beach she cheerfully jumped out of the car and she said, “Wow, this is paradise!” She loved the bright sun and the hotness that it released, and those powerful ocean´s waves that crashed against the cliffs as she watched the seagulls joyfully fly around in circles in the air. She felt in heaven when the warm and golden sand ran against her little toes with a gentle breeze, and the gorgeous shiny shells that she found as she walked in the shore. However, the ocean wasn’t what she had imagined, those waves were too...

...The crisp night air, still roosting in the treetops, fleeting away with the birth of dawn, gives way to the faint morning breeze flowing up from the mountains feet. The birds in their frosty night slumber begin to welcome the day with a heart warming chorus as the radiant beams break through the red and yellow leaves, spreading across the rocky peak. The sound of a waterfall echoes through the mountain as the water runs over the ancient rocks. Nature at its finest, waiting to be seen, hiding away in the peaks and gullies, preparing for the Arkansas winter. As I look down from the cliff, a dizzying height, I admire the stunning view. With every day comes difficulties, some old and some new, and it is up to each of us the outcome of our choices....

...It was a bright and sunny day on the Ocean City beach. It was me and my friends, Abigail, Sydney, Carlie, and Cami. It was Abigail's birthday. We decided to go swimming. Abigail stayed on the beach tho, she wasn't a great swimmer. She was also afraid of the sharks, which in the past few days there had been 2 shark attacks on the Ocean City beaches. That didn't bother me or Sydney. When Cami and Carlie realized that Abigail stayed back they returned to our umbrella. Soon later me and Sydney returned for a little lunch. We ate some pb&j sandwiches. About a hour later we returned to water. This time Abiagl came. We went out pretty far, Abigail started to struggle, so she swam back to the beach. On her way back Sydney spotted something swimming...

...Sixteen years into my life I have had a lot of ups, downs, and maybe a few loops just like a roller coaster, but all these things have defined who am I today. The best thing that has ever happened to me has been my family traveling to Mission Beach, San Diego, California every summer since I was two years old. ...question emphasizes the title of the story on a particular notion to the reader. In the fictional story, the gangster, Benji and Reggie are twin brothers of ten months apart. They grew up together inseparably in every aspect. It was common for them to be seen together and when they were not, people always question them on where the other is. High school and puberty brought the difference between them physically. They would be seen away from each other severally, and they even looked different physically with Benji being skinny while Reggie looked chubby. Benji and Reggie are brought up in an upper middle class family, and their parents own a beach house in Sag harbor where they go to during the summers. In the summer of 1985, Benji was 15 years old, and Reggie was 14 years old. During the summer when the whole family left for their beach house, the boys would be left alone for some time when their parents went back to the city to work during the weekdays. Benji and Reggie are described, in the story, as Siamese twins when they were young, describing their inseparable nature. This is clearly brought out by the language used as quoted “Where is the surgeon, who is gifted enough to separate these conjoined twins? Paging Doctor Puberty, with arms scrubbed, smocked to the hilt, chasing the nurses and well versed in the latest means.” The story was set when Benji was 15 years of age, and until this time; they had grown inseparably with his brother. The drifted apart during high...

...Discuss the use of the voice in Spike Jonze’s film ‘her’ as a primary carrier of narrative and consider its relationship to image in the film. Not so long ago, sound was not considered as a significant medium in the media industry. However in 1936 Rudolf Arnheim put together a book, which helped unveil the amounts of unseen potential that were in radio. Subsequently, rather than writing the sound medium out of movies, filmmakers started to realize the essentiality of sound in film, and how effective it is whether it is evident or not. (Arnheim, 1936) Early 2014, Spike Jonze constructed a highly complex movie in which he has set sound as a primary carrier of narrative in ways that are unfamiliar and unique in comparison to most movies seen today. As soon as the movie begins, it starts becoming more and more evident that it will not be a highly visual piece, as it will be more led by story. The movie is set in the near future and revolves around a sensitive and soulful man that earns his living by writing personal letters for people. He is left devastated after he separates from his wife and gradually becomes obsessed with a new complicated operating system, which is highly intuitive and can develop its own separate entity by evolving through space and time. He launches the program and meets Samantha a playful and friendly voice that is acted by Scarlet Johansson. Which is an operating system that consists of an earpiece and a small screen, the size of a cardholder. Throughout...

...Which Essay is Better: A Narrative or A Descriptive? Ever read a story and say to yourself, “What’s happening?” Whenever I read a descriptive essay, that’s what I would say. In this essay I would be comparing and contrasting two types of essays, a narrative and descriptive. I have chosen “Are the rich happy?” by Stephen Leacock 1916 and “Sister Flowers” by Maya Angelou, n.d. By writing my essay, I want to give my views on each and decide which I would rather write. Narrative Essay A narrative essay reflects a personal opinion that is based on your own experiences. This helps you bring a reader into your very own mind and shows him/her the topic you’re writing about through your eyes. Telling a story or event the way it happened for you. It also could provide a sort of lesson or moral to be learned from the outcome of the story as well as what the writer did that contributed to it or not. It’s more on a personal level that any one reading could say that happened to them or that they learned from the story by not doing whatever it was that the writer did. In Stephen Leacock’s “Are the Rich Happy?” the author writes about his experiences with his friends, with of modest income. Most of it, all in his opinion, points out the problems or troubles those with an existential amount of funds in their bank accounts. He goes on to give some examples that he encountered several of his friends going through. “A friend of mine who has ten thousand dollars a year told me the other...

...How successful is fledgling director Sunny Abberton in his creation of Anthony Hines as antagonist, villain and threat to the harmony of the Brotherhood of the Bra Boys? Abberton’s combined roles of filmmaker and participant, allow for personal bias to influence the controlling scenes, within the documentary Bra Boys, due to the director’s positive affiliation with the gang in two distinct ways. Through a heavily edited montage presented in the introduction of conflict in the narrative, Abberton reinforces the dangerous status of antagonist Hines as a harmful and destructive presence for the Brotherhood. The filmmaker achieves this through the use of composed newspaper scans, criminal photographs, and black and white images of Hines, which presents Hines as an enemy of the family and betrayer of the gang. Accompanying these images, Abberton employs eerie non-diegetic background music to anchor negative associations of this character for the audience. Combined within the montage these techniques assist in supporting the direct commentary by Steve Bligh, which reveals Hines’ dark criminal history and the fact his release jeopardised the lives of the Abberton family. Abberton’s controlled representation successfully engages the audience and influences their perception of Hines to align with the filmmaker’s. Through careful construction of mise-en-scène, the montage creates an authentic sense of vulnerability...

...Jesse Jacquez Com101-052 Narrative writting 09-07-13 The Beach Everyone needs a break in life. Chores, school, and work are all daily duties that people want to escape from. The beach releases me from all my responsibilities, so I try to visit the beach every summer at least once. I feel that all work and no play can be socially unhealthy. There should always be time for letup. Everyone needs to get out of work mode once in a while. My cousins enjoy the beach as much as I do, and my cousins always invite me to tag along with them. When I visit the beach, I can personally say that I always create new memories. This past summer, I only got the chance to go to the beach one time, but I still had an amazing time at the beach. The day I went to the beach was perfect. The sun was high in the sky, and the clouds provided just enough shade. The weather for the whole day was beautiful. The sand on the beach was warm to the skin. It felt as if I was walking on a bunch of pillows. As soon as I sat on the beach I completely buried my feet in the sand. The waves where flowing in because of the boat traffic in the distance. The sound of the waves were almost putting me to sleep as I laid on the shore. Many people play recordings of wave sounds to put themselves asleep at night, but the real sound of waves in person is extremely move effective. The water, the sand, and the sky was just exceptional. I could not dream up a better day. The setting of the beach was just right. The great...

...[pic] PLOT AND STRUCTURE: Checklist. • Plan a convincing /realistic story • Make sure some form of CONFLICT is at the centre. • CONFLICT between two or more people, someone in conflict with themselves (making a decision, perhaps), conflict between a person and society, or a person and nature. • Simple and personal ideas work well • Start from what you know and build/ elaborate on this. • Avoid fantasy fiction, ghost stories and complicated adventure stories. • Avoid a plot which ends with : ‘I woke up and it was all a dream/nightmare’ (although a dream might happen inside the story, in a paragraph, perhaps). • Decide whether to use a linear (chronological) structure- • Or a structure using temporal shifts/ time changes such as flashbacks. • Choose third or first person according to task and STICK WITH IT (although there might be an opportunity for selective use of embedded narrative- another voice telling the story). • Try to use narrative hooks- intrigue your readers, perhaps keep them in suspense or keep them guessing! • Plan a definite opening and ending. Task : plan a story using this classic five part structure- • Exposition (opening- it sets the scene and kick off the action) • Encounter – a meeting or key event involving two or more characters. • Complication or conflict- the difficulty. • Climax- the most intense moment of the story. • Resolution- the ending- sad, happy, mixed...

The persona in “The Meatworks” experiences conflict between his love for nature and his workplace, the abattoir, which causes a re-evaluation of his personal morals. To reconcile his passion for nature, he “settles for one of the lowest-paid jobs.” A brutal, one-dimensional version of manliness is revealed in the animalistic imagery evoked from “gnawed it hysterically,”...

...F. Scott Fitzgerald is in many ways one of the most notable writers of the twentieth century. His prodigious literary voice and style provides remarkable insight into the lifestyles of the rich and famous, as well as himself. Exploring themes such as disillusionment, coming of age, and the corruption of the American Dream, Fitzgerald based most of his subject matter on his own despicable, tragic life experiences. Although he was thought to be the trumpeter of the Jazz Age, he never directly identified himself with it and was adverse to many of its manifestations. The life of F. Scott Fitzgerald was deeply divided, in that his early successes in the 1910’s and 1920’s contrast noticeably with the years full of personal happenings and self doubt. It was divided, among all, between the pursuit of the artistic ideal and the continual lure of easy success. He became a victim of the myth of success and money instead of the perpetrator. Nevertheless, Fitzgerald’s incredible prose style and beautiful talent shined through his tragic, disillusioned life and he was able to successful create a beautiful world for his readers to escape to. In the early 1920’s, Fitzgerald was accepted as a symbol of youthful sophistication. He became intensely aware of the strangeness and mystery behind the rich at a young age, and tried so hard to echo their actions through sheen curiosity and characterization. It was then that he established a rich and enduring symbolic value throughout his...
