The Big Trade

Although two people can be discussing what is virtually the same thing, the way it is described can result in two completely different stories. As I looked through the New York Times and the New York Daily News, I saw many articles featuring the same current event topics from all over the world. The topic that I decide to settle on was the shocking National Basketball Association trade that sent the star small forward Rudy Gay of the Memphis Grizzlies across the Canadian border to the Toronto Raptors. The different perspectives and takes by the authors brought the story to the reader in very different ways.
The small differences can be seen as early as the first line. The opening sentence of both articles describes the trade that has been completed, but from the perspective of opposite teams. The New York Times article comes from the perspective of the struggling Raptors, and how the acquisition of Rudy Gay gives them hope on a possible entry into the playoffs. Meanwhile, the opening line of the Daily News article focuses on the Memphis Grizzlies’ money motivated makeover. Although it is only the first sentence, the difference in the use of words by the authors makes the outcome of the trade seem happy on one side, and somber on the other. This sets the tone for the rest of both the articles. The NY Times article makes the trade seem like a simple business move. The single quote used in the article comes from the Raptors’ general manager and his happiness in acquiring a new asset. On the contrary, the Daily News article takes a more personal view on the trade. The main quotes come from a few of the players and their sadness in leaving the places they have come to call their homes. The Daily News article also features a quote from one of the general managers. Unlike the other general manager who was celebrating the move, he instead discussed his sadness in parting with one of his long time players. I was surprised at how more in depth the Daily News article went than the NY Times one. The Daily News brought opinions of several players on the trade which is something that was not featured in the Times. This use of evidence brought readers a bit of a consensus on what the feedback of the trade was. The use of language can represent truth in many different ways. Although both articles were virtually on the same topic, the different perspectives of both authors strongly differed the two articles from each other. We sometimes do not recognize how much perspective can change our outlook on what is being said. What is true in our eyes may not be true in someone elses. Just like in the way one author perceived the trade, the other author’s opinion on it differed. They both conveyed the same story, but through their own truth and words.

Background Globalization is simply becoming world-wide or making it world-wide. It exists at a lot of places in different sizes. Globalization is to create a good world economy. This could be done by big multinational companies. The reason why I mention the multinationals is because of the influence that they (can) have on the economy worldwide. After all, the world trade plays the biggest part in it. However globalization and the free world trade don’t automatically mean that the well-being is divided all over the world. But where did it start? Who started it and why is it so important for the well being of the world? Well, the globalization existed during different levels/steps. People/companies with power from the past created our current globalize civilization. The first level was when the South conquered the North and applying economical structures. Consequences were the slavery. The second level was the colonization. The North plundered the South, recreated maps and set up one religion and forced their language to be the official language. The third level...

...intervention in the depreciation of the Renminbi (RMB) or (CNY). The depreciation of the RMB against the United States of America’s Dollar (USD) puts the USA’s firms and factories at a massive competitive disadvantage (China Currency Overview, 2010). There are two economists’ viewpoints when it comes to the undervaluation or overvaluation of the RMB against the USD and against other world currencies. There are economists that argue that the RMB is overvalued against some world currencies beside the Euro and the USD (Yuan is Overvalued, not Undervalued: report, 2010). Other economists argue that the RMB is undervalued against the USD, and this would be the major focus of this research paper. The RMB’s depreciation allows China to unfairly gain trade advantages over other trading nations. Economists views varies on the level at which the RMB’s undervaluation affect other Chinese trading partners. But most economists agree that currency flexibility would be of great help to decrease global imbalances (China Currency Overview, 2010). This research paper will discuss the different component of the Chinese protectionism policy for its exchange rate, and its effects on other nations such as the USA. The focus will be in showing the advantages and disadvantage for the USA and China in the trading balance. Historical background of the RMB: Preceding year 1994, China had a dual exchange rate system. The dual exchange rate system was practiced in two different ways, which are the official...

...of open ended mutual funds. These open ended funds are still hailing the demanding curse of present age. Using the mutual fund scheme was more beneficial for the investors and was less fruitful for the manager or the body managing and investing the funds. Therefore to make more money from limited funds a newer system was stemmed into the fabric of trade. That system was to engage poor into this business by investing money in the form of blocks. This trick helped the managing body to withdraw more money out of the flow in the form of commission. On the contrary it involved less investment share which was easy to contribute by an average investors. Hence it had the characteristics of close ended mutual fund accompanied by replication of index. This system was easy to manipulate and friendly to the traders. In a nut shell the trade of funds took place in exchange of securities. It was a simple game that could be played without time limit. It had small shares than mutual funds, was more idealized and encouraged by majority of traders and investors. This scheme of investing the funds was given the name of exchange trade funds. It is the combination of index fund and close ended fund. Exchange...

Effect of Fdi on Bilateral Trade

...Effect of FDI on Bilateral Trade Abstract Contemporary literature refers to trade and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as alternative strategies. The debate is mainly between two notions: (1) that FDI displaces trade, and (2) that FDI and trade complement each other. Literature on FDI talks about the effect of foreign investments on trade. Lipsey (2002) mentions that outward FDI may decrease or increase (or have no effect on) exports of home country. These effects depend largely on the competitiveness of the host country and the motives behind investment by the home country in the host country. This paper is aimed at studying the effect of FDI on bilateral trade as well as effect at the aggregate level especially in the developed-developing nation paradigm. Introduction Literature suggests that there are a number of motives on which FDI takes place across nations. Most of the firms in the developed countries will go for foreign investment once they fulfill their domestic market and they in order to grow will go to foreign market. In this case the main motive of a firm is to tap new markets. This entry of one firm in to a foreign market will create a bandwagon effect thorough which their competitors will also enter that market. Again, when the competition sets in the foreign market, companies will be forced to take cost reduction measures to achieve higher profits will look for other destinations which have lower cost of production and thus the motive will become efficiency...

Country a and Country B Both Have the Same Gnp and Balanced Trade

...Country A and Country B both have the same GNP and balanced trade, however their trade value are of a big difference. Country A’s import and exports value 100 while that of Country B is 1,000,000.From their trade volume, we can figure out that Country A is relatively less active in engaging international trade and it’s close to a closed economy, while that of Country B is very active in international trade indicating a free trade economy. Given GDP= C +I +G+X-M, with open market to trade and larger trade volume, investors will invest more in country B and thus country B will have a relatively larger share in investment in the GDP component. Moreover, consumption in country B also shares a relatively larger proportion in the GDP than country A does because a more open market with larger imports favor consumption as choices are more and at lower prices while large exports increase local wages and thus push consumption. On the other hand, in a closed economy, with very little trade, consumption and investment will be relatively weak but government expenditure will be overwhelming to cover up the relative less weighted consumption and investment so as to equalize GNP with country B. Therefore, with lager trade volume, and greater consumption and investment driven, country B has a faster economic growth in terms of real GDP. However, country B, having a faster economy growth compared with country A, is supposed to have a greater GNP as well. But the case is that both the countries...

...International Trade and Finance Speech 1 Name ECO/372 Date Instructor Name International Trade and Finance Speech 2 People often ask what happens when there is a surplus of imports brought into the U.S. Many think that we just have more of what we brought in to be able to hang on to and sell at a later date but that is not the case. When there is a surplus of the products that have been brought in then the price of what the surplus is will drop. Unlike when there just isn’t enough for the demand for the product then the price will raise. The reason that the price will drop is due to the products already have been paid for and now they are storing the products which cost money. When the price is dropped then this allows for the product to be moved quickly and make room for more product and different kind of product. By doing this the price will go up or down on the products based on the supply and the demand for the product. For example in car sales if they cut 10,000 off the price of a car that is 50,000 does it make much sence to sell it at 40,000 if they could get 50,000 out of it. They do this to be able to move the product and get new ones in. The effects of international trade to GDP, domestic markets and university students have a great affect on the GDP. The U.S. is one of the largest contributors to the international trade and our GDP is overwhelmingly impacted due to the huge import consumers. The U.S. relys heavily on products from other countries...

Stratsim

...Summary More than one million Americans are employed in manufacturing motor vehicles, equipment and parts. But the industry has changed dramatically since the U.S. “Big Three” motor vehicle corporations (General Motors, Ford and Chrysler) produced the overwhelming majority of cars and light trucks sold in the United States, and directly employed more than that many people themselves. By 2003, most passenger cars sold in the U.S. market were either imported or manufactured by foreign-based producers at new North American plants (so-called “transplant” facilities). The Big Three now dominate only in light trucks, and are being challenged there by the foreign brands. The Big Three have shed about 600,000 U.S. jobs since 1980, while about one-quarter of Americans employed in automotive manufacturing (nearly 300,000) work for foreign-owned companies — and that excludes Chrysler, which was acquired by Daimler Benz of Germany in 1998. These changes have had major effects on the structure and location of the U.S. motor vehicle industry. Michigan has been the state most directly and adversely affected, losing about 100,000 auto industry jobs since the late 1970s. Most other Midwest auto belt states have either held steady or posted gains in total industry employment, even if they have lost Big Three jobs. Some southern states, notably Kentucky and Tennessee, have been the largest net gainers of jobs in the industry. The transplant vehicle manufacturers virtually...

Deindustrialization in America

...how the Mont Pèlerin Conference changed America view of manufacturing and trade. First I will explain what in general the Mont Pèlerin Conference is, which economic view they represented. Moreover I want to deal with people who are allowed and why they are allowed to join this Conference and which goals they pursue. In general the Mont Pèlerin Conference depended on a meeting which was formed by Friedrich von Hayek in 1947 at Mont Pèlerin in Switzerland. He invited 36 people who followed in a strict sense of liberalism, particularly the economic liberalism. Under these people were above all, economist, but, e.g., also philosophers, historians and politicians. Under it were also some Nobel Prize Laureates in economics and peace. Most of the people were Europeans, only two reluctant Americans took part on this meeting. Surprisingly this meeting was most supported from the american free market and libertarian groups. The goal of this conference was to discuss the view and the roll of the liberalism after the Second World War. The scholars gave on the meeting to level-economic and state interventionist's broads attempts a refusal and looked at a restoration of political freedom and free market economy as an inalienable condition of a lasting future protection after the Second World War. Thus the uppermost aim of the Mont Pèlerin Conference was the creation of a free market economy, above all to free trade and and the world peace originating from it. They thought that the economist...
