“Wisdom is the ability to use your experience and knowledge in order to make sensible decisions or judgments ” (Collins Dictionary). Being wise does not always mean being the smartest, it’s about how someone takes information that is given to them and by using their knowledge, being able to make smart choices. In the play The Boys Next Door, written by Tom Griffin, Lucien Smith does not seem very “smart” to the readers but once they learn about him personally, they find out he knows more than we think which shows that he is very self aware. In the play, out of the four men, Barry, Norman, Lucien and Arnold, Lucien is the wisest because he can tell when something is wrong with others, he always tries his best, and he is the most self aware.
Even though in the play Lucien doesn't seem the brightest, he can easily tell if something is wrong with someone. Jack, the social worker, enters the house with a cut on his hand and Lucien goes and wraps it in his rag and says,”It’ll fix it better” (Griffin 36). “Just tell me to, and I’ll be going to the hospital” (Griffin 37). This quote shows that Lucien sees that Jack is hurt and tries his best to help him out. …show more content…
While Lucien was cleaning for the surprise party, he was spraying an aerosol can everywhere and on everything, Arnold says,” Lucien, if you don't stop spraying, we’re all gonna catch asthma and die” (Griffin 58). Lucien replies with, “I be making it smell clean” (Griffin 58). Impatiently Arnold explains to him,” Lucien, this is furniture polish. You don't use this to freshen the air. This is for polishing furniture” (Griffen 58). This quote shows the readers that Lucien was trying to make the house smell good for the party but instead of using air freshener he used furniture polish wish is kinda

A House In The Sky Literary Analysis

..."Adam carried in several plastic bags, thrusting them in our direction with what I read to be pride, gesturing for us to open them” “ Adam had bought me a notebook and a pen, a bottle of Head & Shoulders two-in-one shampoo/conditioner, some perfume, a bar of soap, a toothbrush, and a family-sized toothpaste” (Lindhout 157-158). These acts of kindness were very rare although could make her living conditions tolerable. The second quote describes one of the many ways Lindhout gets by every day. “Sometimes, as Nigel dozed on his mattress, I told him long made-up stories, personal fairy tales, that culminated each time with me happening upon a whole pound of dark chocolate or a big pile of M&M’s and eating it all up” “In my version of paradise, the air was always cold and the rivers ran with candy” (Lindhout 180-181). Tunnel Vision Suspense

...The next element that Shaw uses throughout her novels is suspenseful mood, which she uses to make the reader think about what the novel is about, and to keep the reader interested. According to an academic journal on gale databases written by Rebecca Hachmyer, “Readers will find themselves deep within Liza’s shell-shocked mind as she and her father enroll themselves in the witness protection program” (“Shaw, Susan: Tunnel Vision”). Shaw makes sure the readers stay interested in the novel by creating such suspense and mystery with Liza having to be on the run the whole time. This suspenseful mood is seen in Tunnel Vision. Liza states in the book, “Life felt so unreal. Mom was dead, someone had attacked me with a knife, and now we were living in Kansas” (Tunnel Vision 101)....

Will Grayson Conflicts

...I walk out the main door—the air cold, the sun warm—and down the steps” (Green 218). When I read this quote I pictured a boy depressed and all alone. I chose a picture of a boy by himself with tears running down his face. He is somewhere that looks to be a dark, desolate place. This picture is better than others because it is a picture of a boy. Most of the crying pictures were of girls. This picture also is unique because you can see his tears. Review I think John Green and David Levithan made a superior novel. I would recommend Will Grayson, Will Grayson. They had thought of so many creative novels in the past, but working together was a great idea. They came up with a way to talk about two different guys with two totally different life stories and brought them together to create Will Grayson, Will Grayson. I think the novel was confusing at times and definitely a challenge to read. I had to look online and...

Next Term We'Ll Mash You

...Next Term, We’ll Mash You Would you like to go to a school, which your parents have chosen for you and where the other students beat up the new kids? That is what Next Term, We’ll Mash You written by Penelope Lively is about. In the short story we are introduced to Charles, the protagonist, and his parents, who take a visit to St. Edward’s Preparatory School, which is a very fine school. While the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Manders, speak to the headmaster, the wife of the headmaster shows Charles the school and let him talk to some of the student. She leaves Charles and the inquisitive student alone and in between all the questioning the words “Next term, we’ll mash you” are said. The main theme of the text is expectations from parents. There is another side theme which could be defined as wanting to please your parent or being obliged to speak up for your own sake. A different and third theme could be social status or ones position in society. The text is a short story because there are few characters involved. The plot takes place over a short period of time and is told chronologically. The narrator is an all-knowing 3rd who has the ability to reveal the characters thought. Mostly, it is the parents thought we hear about and not Charles. We can only imagine what he is thinking on the basis of his appearance. Charles appears as an uncertain and indecisive boy. It tells from these quotes “The child hesitated, stood up, sat, then rose again with his father” (p.2,...

...an important statement when he says, “ I do not trust any animal with more than six legs and two eyes”(Quammen 40). I find this statement to be so important because here we have David Quammen an author with a true love for nature and he struggles with his personal bias against animals. It is in this facet of the chapter in which I am able to connect my personal struggle with a bias. When walking into my first day of high school I was extremely nervous, not knowing exactly what to expect I didn’t go into the situation with an open mind. As I sat down for my first math class a foreign boy entered the room gazing for a seat. I remember vividly, for some reason not wanting the boy to sit next to me so I stared down at the desk, refusing to look up. Starring down at the desk I heard as the foot steps became louder and louder. Finally looking up I watched the foreign looking student sit down directly next to. After an awkward 15 minutes of no conversation the student turned to me and introduced him self saying his name was Egzon and that he was from Albania. Class after class we would have small conversations and I would do my best to seem uninterested. It was not only until our fifth class together till I realized how ignorant I was being. As I thought more about my situation going into high school, I soon observed that Egzon was the only kid that had made an effort to talk to be and become my friend. So from that day fourth I made a promise to myself that I would do my best to get...

...silence frustrates our normal perceptions.” (para. 3, 383). Jean-Pierre Jeunet used silence as a way to make the “Speechless Kiss” scene more profound and poetic. The scene begins with Nino entering Amelie’s apartment. The only diegetic sounds are their footsteps and their respiration. The silence is then interrupted with a loud noise occurring from the closure of the front door. “With carefully interplay between sound and silence, a filmmaker can produce a new rhythm for the film” (para. 3, 383).
