Led on by the Truman Doctrine of 1947 and anti-communist propaganda, Americans strongly believed communist spies were among them. Taking into account this belief some might consider the full scale investigation launched by the Senate Committee at the whim of Joseph McCarthy justified. However, fear was not the only cause of such scrutiny.
