...Current Events in Business Research RES/351 July 28, 2014 Annette West Current Events in Business Research For the purpose of this assignment I ended up going in two totally different directions. Initially I wanted to research “burn out” on the job as I personally feel it and I personally see it every day at work, but in the end I decided to research on a second issue at my place of employment and that is “working off the clock”. I began working for my current employer, the federal government, in 2009. Since that time I have noticed the common practice of the expectation of my fellow workers and myself, without specifically being asked, to perform our duties and not report our time that was in excess of eight hours per day. Most recently I was asked by our local Union to become a Union Stewart and since accepting that position I wanted to research as to why this is normal practice and how we can go about correcting this issue. In researching the University’s Electronic Reserve Readings I have decided to use a paper labeled “Working off the Clock and Its Impact.” To begin with I believe it is common knowledge that it is against federal law to allow any employee to work outside of their normal working hours without compensation. According to the Department of Labor’s (DOL) website “the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) prescribes standards for wages and overtime pay, which affect most private and public employment. The act is administered by the Wage and Hour Division....

...employment and way work is performed (Loudoun, et al., 2009). This paper will define collective and individual agreements, analyse the differences between them, examine the role of employee voice, trade union involvement and the role of the State and regulation of the industrial relations system. It will consider the impact of the agreements upon both employees and outcomes achieved by businesses and will make the argument that the most efficient and productive form of workplace arrangements for business are collective agreements. Collective Agreements Collective agreements are formal contracts that are negotiated between an employer and a group of employees that stipulate the terms and conditions of employment. This type of agreement exists in a more centralised industrial relations system, and this system is based upon compulsory conciliation and arbitration, a system that has been established since the Conciliation and Arbitration Act of 1904. Collective agreements exist in a pluralist work relations environment. The pluralist theory identifies that there are different sources of authority and loyalty within organisations and that these sources may have differences of interest. Some interests may be in common between the employer and employees, but where there is a perception of inequality conflict can inevitably arise (Loudoun, et al., 2009). Collective Agreements recognise employee representation (trade unions) in collective bargaining which...

... 1 Team Assignment Disparity of Wages on the Labor Market part 2 RES/351 University of Phoenix Team Assignment 2 What are the research questions? 1. Do minorities get penalized when it comes to hiring and wages? 2. What is the average annual wages for each job type in the local region? 3. What qualities affect the wages earned annually by employees? These questions will help to lead the direction of our paper, as well as to help ensure that our group can keep the focus of the paper to stay where we want it to be. Identify one dependent variable among the variables in the Data Set for the organization assigned to your team. This variable must be the most suitable one among the variables whose values change with the changes in the values of other variables in the Data Set. For this project, it has become clear that the dependant variable in our data set is wages. Independent variables that are a driving force, in this case, are going to be race, experience, and gender. These things can have an effect on wages that are to be set but being a Union member does not seem to have an impact on that. We also noticed that education did not seem to have an impact on the wages set for employees. What ethical considerations must you take into account? We need to stop and think about the important ethical issues at hand...

...J & J Financial Services Risk Identification, Ranking and Monitoring The J & J Financial Services is a project in the making. It is designed to provide short-term loan to qualified customers within the rural community of Grand Gedeh, in the Eastern Region of Liberia, West Africa. The proprietor of this set up contacted me to assist him in developing a risk analysis for his project. Giving my training and knowledge of what I have studied and know from my PM course, I advised him that the way to begin is to start a brainstorming session in order to explore and identify the potential risk for this project. The brainstorming process as indicated by (Cooper, 2005) allows for those involve in the risk identification process to exploit their creative capacity in the preliminary identification of a wide range of risks. Hence, in following this approach, an arranged meeting was scheduled for the J&J Financial Services’ proprietor, the Prospects Consultant Group, (PCG) Executive Manager and I to meet at the Offices of the (PCG) offices to begin the Process. The below outcome is what emerged as an initial risk assessment for the J&J Financial Services. Brainstorming Session The PCG offices provided the space and resources that were used to begin the process: a manual whiteboard, board markers, note pads, and other essential logistics were made available. Identifying and Defining the Elements 1. Inadequate transportation 2. Fire hazard 3. Competitor’s threat ...

...Definition As citizens of the greatest country in the world, The United States of America, we acquire many rights. A few of the many rights that we acquire are the right to freedom of speech, the right to choose our religion, the right to vote for whomever we feel will run our country to his or her greatest potential, and most important of all, the right to equality. Equality is the one thing that many Americans before us have fought and lost their lives over for centuries. Whether it be for race, religion, or the right to marry whichever gender we please, equality is the most profound rights that we have not only as American citizens, but as human beings. In this paper I will discuss my views on same sex marriage and analyze how the states Massachusetts and California are more liberal than the state of Kentucky when it comes to the issues of same sex marriage. The states Massachusetts and California are more liberal than the state of Kentucky when it comes to the issues of same sex marriage. In my opinion all American states should follow the state of Massachusetts and allow the right to same sex marriages. Granting legal marriage rights under the law must extend to gays and lesbians to ensure that all citizens enjoy full human rights. Same sex marriage is not only the marriage of man and man or woman and woman, but the marriage of two human beings who are in love. Love sees no gender, and my location should not play a role in who I can and can not marry. Literature...

...federal minimum wage. Minimum wage has continuously increased throughout the years due to interest rates and the value of a dollar. Since its introduction the minimum wage has risen from 25 cents an hour to 7.25 dollars per hour in 2009. In President Obama’s recent State of the Union Address he states, “Working folks shouldn’t have to wait year after year for the minimum wage to go up while CEO pay has never been higher.” He hopes to raise the minimum wage by 2014 to 9 dollars per hour. Following the President’s support on minimum wage increase Sen. Tom Harkin (Democrat-Iowa) and Rep. George Miller (Democrat-California) formalized a proposal known as S.460, the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013 to increase the minimum wage by 2015 to $10.10. This proposal includes increasing the minimum wage (in three incremental increases of $.95) and then indexing it to inflation (“as prices rise, so would the minimum wage” (Cooper, Hall 2013)). Also, the tipped minimum wage (the minimum wage paid to workers who earn a portion of their wages in tips) would be increased in $0.85 increments from its current value of $2.13 per hour, where it has languished since 1991, until it reaches 70 percent of the regular minimum wage (Cooper, Hall 2013). However, in the current tough economic times many people argue that an increased minimum wage will only hurt and that the minimum wage should be abolished altogether. We will further look into controversies on the federal minimum wage in the United States and...

...The implications of the diminution in union forms of representation for the efficiency of employee voice within the workplace In the first decade of the 21st century, HR has been set a large significant number of issues and many subjects such as employee relationship, strategic HR approaches, employee rewarding, people resourcing, management ethics and so forth have attracted great deal of attention, concern and study to analysis their role, effect and contributions in organizations. Even though there are wide ranges of subjects playing different roles in human resource practices, an appreciation of operating the relationship between employees and employers has become an essential position of business and management recently. Traditionally, employers in employee relationship tried to maintain the control of the workforce with the goal of enhancing business performance. Clearly, if workers are treated fairly and respectively, in addition, they have appropriate influence on managerial decision-making, it could better for them perform improvably. ...Communication Monographs Vol. 73, No. 4, December 2006, pp. 406 Á433 Take This Job and . . . : Quitting and Other Forms of Resistance to Workplace Bullying Pamela Lutgen-Sandvik Adult bullying at work is an unbelievable and, at times, shattering experience, both for those targeted as well as for witnessing colleagues. This study examines the narratives of 30 workers, some of whom where targeted and all of whom saw others bullied. Their responses paint a complex picture of power in bullying situations that reframe the ‘‘power-deficient target’’ into agents who galvanize a variety of resources on their own or others’ behalf but also place them at considerable risk. In some cases, employees evaluate the abusive situation and quickly resign. Others protest but, if resistance fails to stop abuse, they also leave organizations. The paths of resistance, case outcomes, and dialectic nature of resistance and control are discussed. Keywords: Workplace Bullying; Verbal Aggression; Organizational Communication; Resistance; Power Adult bullying at work is a shocking, frightening, and at times shattering experience, both for those targeted and for onlookers. Workplace bullying, mobbing, and emotional abuse*essentially synonymous phenomena*are persistent, verbal, and nonverbal aggression at work that include personal attacks, social ostracism, and a multitude of other painful messages and hostile interactions. Because this phenomenon is perpetrated by and through communication, and because...

Boxer, Naor- Panther ID 1228549 “FIU Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management- HFT4413 RVC/RPC” July 16th 2015 Abstract In this paper I talk about how a young man from Israel who really grew up with very little worked his way up in the restaurant industry and I go into detail on his many struggles and his many triumphs. I speak about how he worked his way up from line cook to restaurant owner, and what he is doing now in his own restaurant after working many years in other people’s restaurants. I speak about what he is doing to become successful and how he was able to turn his knowledge of the restaurant industry into a flourishing business. I go deep into the understanding of a kosher restaurant and how there is certain guidelines in the kosher food industry. I speak about his competitors and what he can do to overcome his short comings. Mikes burgers is a unique blend of fast food and fine dining and I go into that as well. The restaurant industry is changing. As the world speeds up, people have less and less time to sit down and enjoy a meal with their families. What’s more, they want the food they do order to be cheap and quickly prepared. At the same time, there are dozens of restaurants opening all of the time, each looking for a competitive advantage over the other. Restaurants post deals on Twitter, and reach new potential customers on Facebook. They advertise on...

...Work Pressure and Stress How do symptoms of stress differ from male to female? According to Hans Selye, acknowledge internationally as the “father of stress research” (1936), defined stress as “the nonspecific response of the body to any demand placed upon it”. Researchers continue to struggle today in an effort to agree on exactly what is stress and how it can be measured (AIS, 1979). Stress is a word that comes from the Latin word stringere meaning to draw tight, Cannon (1929) defined stress in terms of the internal physiological state of subjects exposed to threatening or exciting situations, e.g. the raised adrenaline secretion that can be observed in the well-known ‘fight or flight’ reaction (Arnorld and Randall et al., 2010) For several decades, occupational health researchers have been concerned with factors at work that may cause stress (Innstrand et al., 2012). Work-related stress and work pressure draw attention of many researchers due to the increase...

...Abraham Lincoln Research Paper Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 close to Hodgenville, Kentucky. His family moved to Indiana in 1816. When Lincoln was ten his mother died from poisoned milk. His father remarried the next year to Sarah Bush Johnston. Abraham liked her very much and even later recalled her "his angel mother. (Encarta)" Abraham had less than one year of formal education during his life. He was self-educated and taught himself how to read and write. When he was not in school, he worked on the frontier farm clearing out forests with his axe. When Abraham Lincoln was 21 he and his family moved to Illinois. There he worked on a farm growing corn. But more importantly here was where he gave his first political speech. In 1830, the same year his family moved to Illinois, he went to a political rally and was convinced to talk for a candidate on his behalf. According to a witness there, Lincoln "was frightened but got warmed up and made the best speech of the day. (Encarta)." Abraham Lincoln's political career started in the spring of 1832 by running for a seat in the Illinois' House of Representatives. However an unusual turn of events happened a month after he announced he was running. The store he was working at went bankrupt and he lost his job. Very shortly thereafter Native Americans rebelled and the governor of Illinois asked for volunteers to help put this down to which Lincoln promptly volunteered for. He never experienced actual combat, but during...
