...ATTITUDES AND SOCIAL COGNITION The Dark Side of Creativity: Original Thinkers Can Be More Dishonest Francesca Gino Harvard University Dan Ariely Duke University Creativity is a common aspiration for individuals, organizations, and societies. Here, however, we test whether creativity increases dishonesty. We propose that a creative personality and a creative mindset promote individuals’ ability to justify their behavior, which, in turn, leads to unethical behavior. In 5 studies, we show that participants with creative personalities tended to cheat more than less creative individuals and that dispositional creativity is a better predictor of unethical behavior than intelligence (Experiment 1). In addition, we find that participants who were primed to think creatively were more likely to behave dishonestly than those in a control condition (Experiment 2) and that greater ability to justify their dishonest behavior explained the link between creativity and increased dishonesty (Experiments 3 and 4). Finally, we demonstrate that dispositional creativity moderates the influence of temporarily priming creativity on dishonest behavior (Experiment 5). The results provide evidence for an association between creativity and dishonesty, thus highlighting a dark side of creativity. Keywords: creativity, ethics, morality, moral flexibility, unethical behavior Evil always turns up in this world through some genius or other. —Denis Diderot (1713–1784) The ability to generate...

...Product Innovation at Bank of America By Cindy Murray What financial institutions can learn from inventions and innovations in other industries. owhere is innovation more essential to survival than in the banking industry. In the payments domain, for example, nonbank competitors less constrained by bank regulations and therefore more agile are changing the banking industry’s grip on the public perception of banks as the only trusted brand for holding and moving money. However, innovation is challenging for banks. Many products, like payments, are a commodity. A vast number of products and a complex infrastructure require continual upgrades to keep apace with technology advancements and comply with evolving regulations and security requirements. This article describes how Bank of America fosters a culture of innovation. Pivotal to an innovative culture is the direct engagement of clients in the innovation process. We highlight some of the ways that Bank of America achieves this. But first we’ll look at the role of innovation process in building brand loyalty. N Build Brand Equity Through Progressive Transformation Change can occur by redefining a problem or redefining a solution. According to Robert Sternberg, a leading creativity expert,1 creativity is the ability to redefine a problem. Innovation can be viewed as the ability to redefine a solution. Successful innovation is a process over time—one that typically happens in increments rather than leaps. Rarely is a single innovation...

...perspective that suggests unorthodox solutions (Business Dictionary, 2012). The purpose of creativity is to add value to a business, organization, or society for a thriving outcome. For this case study, Jack Dorsey is considered a subsequent innovative and creative up and coming leader behind the greatest American innovator of our time, Mr. Steve Jobs. Jack Dorsey was named in 2008 by Technology Review as one of the top innovators in the world under the age of 35 and considered a source of wonderment in the business world (Technology Review, 2008). Widely known for his conception of Twitter and invention of the Square, Dorsey is recognized as changing communication in social, business, and financial arenas. Twitter was created primarily to network online, build traffic to a company’s websites, promote brand forms from a personal or business aspect, and communicate in real-time (Tech Tips Salon, 2012). The concept of Twitter started off as an extension of social media and this marketing tool has evolved into a powerful business model. Mr. Dorsey creatively responded to the need to bring a tangible way for society to have access and communicate with entertainers, top level management, government officials, and various other entities that everyday people would not ordinarily have access to. Unlike Twitter, the creation of the square was a simple approach to receiving and making mobile payments. This innovation directly addresses limited ways for sellers and buyers to do business...

...competition due to the fact that traditional ways can hardly keep up with the pace of increasing complexities and differentiated needs. As a result ,This essay will discuss the necessity and importance of creative thinking for success in business. Serrat (2009) argues that human resource is the most important factor to produce creativity and the world will remain the original level without innovation. This is especially true when we look back the history of social developments that illustrates new ideas and innovative products are produced by some employers with creative thinking skills. Therefore, companies should invest substantial money in training programs in order to encourage employees to develop the awareness and ability of innovative thinking. It is also important for executives to recruit experienced professionals by offering more attractive payment, and to make some specific plans like some themed activities to foster creativity of the employees. What is more, upgrading and reorganizing the working environment is also one the most effective and common ways adopted by many international giants to stimulate employees’ passion and creativity. For instance, Google has been voted as the best workplace in many countries like Canada and India. However, micro-kitchens, tech stops and lavalamps in the lobby are only a small part of the most innovation-oriented environment that Google provides. The success of Google in terms of working conditions mainly lies in different decoration...

...When creativity is used within an organization, innovative and creative performance is encouraged among management and employees. Imagination and creative intelligence is the total reflection of creativity. “Creativity intelligence depicts how the world is perceived through personality, individuality, beliefs, behavior, and character. The desire to accomplish something new, achieve a different outcome, or thought process is the focus of creativity. Creative intelligence consists of four styles: intuitive, innovative, imaginative, and inspirational (Rowe, 2004).” This paper will explore the four styles of creative intelligence and how they influence an organization’s strategic management process. Also, the influence the five forces have over the mental models and mindsets will be evaluated, and examples demonstrating how mental models and mindsets can limit the decision-making process of an organization will be mentioned. Intuitive The intuitive style guides decisions based on previous experiences and the results that occurred from the experiences (Rowe, 2004). Jack Welch, the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of General Electric was a strong leader that led a company out of near ruin to revitalization. His strategy was to focus on the results and action. He is described as being a tough and charismatic, yet fair leader who believed that the key to a business being successful is people. Welch believed that every person had possibility, and that creativity within...

...the product they may not purchase it. How many people today in Pakistan need I-pod? How many people really need Mobile + Internet + Camera + TV all in one set? Can we call it marketers created their needs? Looking at advertisements today the word 'free' is the most common denominator found in the ads, free is used in combinations such as free home trial, free inspection, and buy one get one free, free installation, free parking, free demonstration and free consultation. The word free is usually a powerful catalyst that springs the consumer into buying that particular product or idea even though he or she might not need it. I think it also attract people into buying things they don't need. Also terms such as 'no payments till 2010' or 'money back guarantee' 'no down payment' 'offer good while supplies last' encourage customers to try the product . Therefore it creates needs, we will need something that didn't even exist a year ago but now we can't live without. So what really helps creating and satisfying needs? The best answer to that would be NEW AGE MARKETING! Social Networking: In the same case many products and services are spoken about through Social Networking sites...

...so it’s not the traditional song. He uses harmonizing chords, as well as, changed some of the words in the song to make it his own creativity. I am going to decide whether or not Bobby Bandleader will owe royalty payments to Johnny Singstealer simply because he uses the melody of the song and the basis of the song, HBTY. “Happy Birthday To You” is a song that is known throughout the world as the birthday song (Cold Case: The Happy Birthday Song Edition, 2011). The origination of the song was copywritten by Preston Ware Orem and R.R. Forman many years ago. They were the first to actually write out the song in which they received the copyright because of that and were estimated at $5 million dollars in 1990. The copyright isn’t due to expire until 2030, but has now been passed down to Johnny Singstealer in which he now owns the copyright. The purpose of copyright laws and royalties is to afford the copyright owner a fair return for his creative work and the copyright user a fair income under existing economic conditions (Proceedings by Copyright Royalty Judges). Bobby Bandleader has not sung the song, “Happy Birthday To You” verbatim. He has taken the liberty to change some of the words of the song and add some harmony to make it his own rendition. With that said, I don’t feel that he really owes Johnny Singstealer any royalty payments at all. I would say he would, if, the song was song in public exactly how it was copywritten. Mr. Bandleader adds other musicians...

...such an interesting and complex company culture and organizational structure. EBay is a leader in the tech, e-commerce, and payment industries, causing it to require a unique organizational structure which optimizes all its employees ideas and talents. Corporate culture is the moral, social, and behavioral norms of an organization based on the beliefs, attitudes, and priorities of its internal community. In a big organization such as eBay, there are many sub-cultures running from division to division, even office to office. However, across all these sub-cultures, eBay strives to be a diverse and socially responsible company, encouraging creativity and group efforts. EBay focusses on the belief that the ability to empower their business starts with individual ideas, and that these ideas are meant to be shared, creating collaboration, communication, and new ideas. EBay is all about “cultivating ideas that will create new opportunities for customers.” Although this culture is spread throughout all of eBay’s workforce, many employees feel that there is a lack of work/life balance. In addition to this, hiring outside the company for upper management positions has created the feeling of there being little room for advancement within the company. The organizational structure at eBay Inc. is centered around two different business segments, marketplace and payments. While CEO John Donahoe oversees many functions of the...

Kirsti Paakkanen’s Leadership and Vision:- Her leadership style can be described as “emotional management”. This includes all the principles that have guided her through life, such as emotion, respect, truth, enthusiasm, discipline, rewarding success, community spirit, taking full responsibility and caring about things. It is based on valuing people and on the belief that every individual has his own ability, original creativity and skills. This is why teamwork is the most important working method at Marimekko, and it has allowed the joy and even ecstasy of success to be experienced. Kirsti Paakkanen does not believe that the intrinsic creativity of design can be delegated, nor is it generated by organizing or planning, even though people often seem to think that is the case.
