...Thesis Some of the Christian knights participated because if they died in battle their sins would be forgiven, while others wanted fame and fortune also escaping the law and traveling the country were some reasons that the knights joined. Source #1 Pope Urban’s Sermon at Clermont (1095) The Turks and Arabs were conquering the land of the Christian people so Pope Urban gave a speech influencing Christian knights to do God’s will and defeat the enemy. The knights had a peace of mind in the beginning of this journey because Pope Urban had told them that if a knight would fall in battle, their sins would be forgiven. The Pope had also shown a way for people that were going down dark paths in society, to redeem themselves and achieve glory. Robbers and thieves could become knights while brothers that had been in quarrel with each other could come together to fight side by side against barbarians. Source #2 Ekkehard (1102) About one hundred thousand men became soldiers of God to defeat the enemies of the church. The west Franks were quick to take action do to their homeland was ruined with civil war and famine. Not just normal men participated, high ranking individual's took part also due to the influence of prophets that had appeared to them. It is stated that “A great part of them started forth with wife and child and laden with their entire...

...The Caped Crusader, the Worldʼs Greatest Detective, the Dark Knight, defender of the innocent, crusader for justice, and defender of Gotham City. Now that sounds like a real superhero and someone to look up to. Playboy, Spare Parts Man, alcoholic; does that sound like someone youʼd call a hero? Batman and Iron Man are very different kinds of heroes, but the men behind the masks seem to be very similar on the surface. While Batman has a very strict moral code and refrains from killing anyone when he can, Iron Man has no qualms about killing. Both Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark are billionaires, both seem to be good with the ladies, and both are extremely intelligent. Neither have any real “super-powers,” but both used their intellect to make themselves into heroes. Bruce Wayne outside of his suit could hold his own in a fight with his martial arts background. Tony Stark, on the other hand, seems to have no desire to better himself in hand-to-hand combat. As a child, Bruce witnessed his parents being murdered and swore to keep the city safe. While being held hostage by a group of terrorists, Tony makes the Iron Man suit purely to save himself. After these life changing experiences, both take to the vigilante life but for different reasons: Bruce to protect citizens so that no one else would have to feel the pain he felt, and Tony for the recognition and fame. Letʼs talk about motivation. Batman began because a little boy was left devastated and traumatized. Bruce Wayne was orphaned as...

While recuperating , Gordon promotes Blake to detective, with Blake to detective, with Blake reporting directly to him. Blake-who has deduced Batman’s identity-and Gardon encourage Batman to return, but Alfred Pennyworth resigns after a failed attempt to dissuade him, including informing Bruce that Rachel Dawes had intended to marry Dent before she died . ...authority and become the ruler of the public scene of the travelling pilgrams. This is done in order to counter the male domination that she encounters in her life and use her tale as a “powerful instrument”. Through this power, the Wife alters the conventional chivalric tale by having the knight be a rapist, and the quest is comprised of finding out what women want. This is also a form of the Wife creating a framework where the women have power from the beginning of the tale. The enjoyment from the Wife is seen through her employing her power in dominating the knight, and imaging herself being young and beautiful like the transformed old hag...

...a giant bat is no mean feat. It's a fundamentally ridiculous idea, and Nolan knew that the only way to do it was to really dig down into the mindset…” (Emma Dibdin, Global Features Editor at DigitalSpy) Detecting the intertextual relationship between DC’s Batman comics from the Golden and Silver Ages and the 2005 movie adaption, Batman Begins directed by Christopher Nolan enriched my understanding of American identity. Robert Kane created the Caped Crusaders in the 1950s with the intention of creating a source of escapism for the young men and boys through an iconic character to distract them from the perils of the Cold War (1942-1991)[1]. Nolan’s Batman Begins on the other hand creates a neorealist platform for the Dark Knight to reinvent himself and display the transformation of American Identity over the life of the Batman franchise. The creators of the comic book strongly endorsed the war effort and patriotism as a heroic action every young man should follow, while tucking away the destruction caused by the war, while Nolan focuses on the post-9/11...

...beliefs. The only thing that binds these two individuals together is the “Good Man” speech. The Grandmother’s trying to convince the Misfit to question his morality. He disagrees with her stating “Nome, I ain’t a good man… “I” “didn’t kill my daddy”… “He died of the epidemic flu” (O’Connor 17, 19). The Misfit was abused by his father, the alpha of the household. Even though his mother loved him she couldn’t challenge his father because that would put her at risk for getting thrown out into the streets. The effects of this domestic abuse would have been anxiety, PTSD, and a dramatic personality change. During the Misfit’s first appearance in the short story he wore “spectacles that gave him a scholarly look” (O’Connor 13) similar to a teacher or a professor. He felt like he was not intelligent enough. The Misfit frequently uses slang and tells the Grandmother that he was “never shown” his “papers” and that’s the reason why he “signs” himself “now” (O’Connor 21). This lack of education caused the Misfit to drop out of school and call himself the “Misfit.” The Misfit says that his name signifies his awareness of the disproportion between his actions and their punishment (Desmond 131). He changed his name to leave his old life behind and start a new one. It signifies a rebirth for him. The Misfit’s father considered his son to be failing at life. In Christopher Nolan’s 2008 film The Dark Knight, The Joker is a sociopath as well because he identifies his actions as being barbaric...

...beautiful even in its flaws. Among these, a haunting and mesmerizing Era captures the thought of literary critics – the Medieval Period. A period marked by powerful beliefs, conflict and self-knowledge, and inhabited by a spirit torn between Christianity and paganism, between virtue and sin, between light and utter darkness. An Era portraying a country trying to adapt to drastic changes brought on by the Norman Conquest of 1066, a country fighting to establish its own history in order to gain independence. A Period of knights and ladies, of valour and good faith, which gives life to some of the highest ideals mankind has ever known. It has introduced us to concepts such as chivalry and courtly love, pure expressions of spiritual essence. Of these ideals poets and authors wrote with lively passion, embroidering them in poems such as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, or The Wife of Bath. Although its poet remains unknown, the story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight remains instilled in our minds as one of the prime examples of chivalry, Gawain representing the chivalrous ideal of the period. His story begins at New Year, in a court filled with joy and happiness, during a banquet thrown by the legendary King Arthur. In the midst of the merriment, the King expresses his desire to behold a marvel, refusing to eat until he had done so. His desire is soon to be fulfilled, as a mysterious creature of the purest green strides in the castle atop his steed, which was also green. This creature...

The room was dark, it had some light sources, but it seemed unusually dark. “The cultist bitch must be out?” Jhorlia grumpy from the failure said. Heswyn nodded as she lit some candles to help liven things up, but her face showed sorrow. “Yes, mistress. She is speaking to the Grand Summoner. She won’t be back till later.” Spoke with a voice of melancholy. Jhorlia raised an eyebrow as she felt something was amiss. Heswyn while usually apologetic when she failed or messed up seemed to be abnormally sad. Dismissing it, she asked her for some...

...of the Roman Empire, the Eastern Mediterranean fell into the hands of the Muslims. So, since 638 AD, Jerusalem had been governed by Muslims. The Muslim Caliphs were, at heart, capitalists, and they tolerated Christian pilgrims because the tourist money helped the economy. But then, in the 1070s, Turks (who were recent Muslim converts) conquered these Holy Lands and mistreated the Jews and Christians, not realizing how useful their good will (and money) could be. The Byzantine Empire was also threatened by the Turks. Emperor Alexius asked the pope for assistance. Pope Urban II, a skillful orator, seeing an outlet for the violent energy of Christian knights, made an urgent speech calling for them to take back Jerusalem. Thousands responded, resulting in the First Crusade. Dates and Leaders of the Crusades: Urban II made his speech calling for Crusade at the Council of Clermont in November, 1095. He combined the idea of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land with waging a war against the infidels. When he also promised complete absolution past present and future, his message was irresistible! This is seen as the start of the Crusades. (However, the reconquista of Spain, an important precursor to crusading activity, had been going on for centuries.) The First, 1095-1099, called by Pope Urban II and led by Peter the Hermit (The Peoples’ Crusade), Walter the Penniless, Godfrey of Bouillon, Baldwin and Eustace of Flanders, Prince Raymond of Toulouse,...
