George and Martha are husband and wife with 4 children. They live in a valley full of corn and bean fields. Their future look promising but both the parents are unfaithful to each other. George and Martha are like mice. Mice don't marry or stay faithful. Their definition of bright future is just mating and have babies. Researchers have studied rodents for over 25 years and learned that their mating behaviour and family values are not very different from humans. Rodents usually prefer to mate with one partner, but when another female comes, 50% of the males will deviate. It is in their nature. A sociologist at the University of Washington claims,” We're not an animal that finds it in our best interest to screw around,” but studies shown that at least 1/3 married people cheat. The feeling of love and lust are not always parallel. Sometimes they run off in different direction. Our brains have evolved this way over millions of years. Lowell Getz, a retired professor of University of Illinois, was the first person to discover that voles were monogamous. He started his study in 1972. He set traps to monitor and tag the voles. Getz wanted to learn more about the animals so he contacted Sue Carter, a lab scientist. Carter studies how sex hormones influence behaviours. 2 hormone called Oxytocin and Vasopressin bond male and female and mother and babies. Vasopressin found in human male may promotes jealousy. Testosterone is the hormone that promote sex drive. When a person is sexually aroused, the amygdala and right prefrontal cortex were suppressed. These 2 parts of the brain give the person depressing and negative emotions. In many cases, romantic love becomes compassion love. Oxytocin and Vaspressin are whats keeping the couple together.
