In Provoked and “The Disappearance” by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, they describe how the Indian women leave their native country and immigrate to Western countries due to the arranged marriage that they have no rights to choose. Although the Indian women try to learn and integrate into Western culture, their husbands expect them to be a traditional Indian woman who should stay home and take care of the children, certainly isolated from mainstream society. If the Indian women try to rebel or challenge their husband’s authority, they are subject to their husband’s abuse in the fact of their machismo culture. This is because men try to retain their authority in the household as well as their status in the house.

Indian traditional clothes represent the style of dictatorial, conservative and restrictive as they usually cover the body while Western clothes represent the freedom of expression that we can add our own tastes to form a new trend. In “The Disappearance”, Divakaruni mentions, “Once in a while, of course, he had to put his foot down, like when she wanted to get a job or go back to school or buy American clothes. But he always softened his no’s with a remark like, What for, I am here to take care of you, or You look so much prettier in your Indian clothes, so much more feminine” (2). This demonstrates how the husband attempts to convince her wife that she is prefect without making any alteration. Kiranjita’s husband asked his wife to remove the new jacket and put on the traditional clothes before thay can go out (Provoked). This illustrates how Kiranjita’s husband is a stubborn person that he does not change his attitude easily that he requires his wife to listen to him. In Provoked and “The Disappearance”, the Indian woman’s husband forbids his wife to wear any Western clothes as he tries to prevent his wife from absorbing the Western culture. This is because he is afraid of his wife will become a modern Western woman who will eventually question his authority in the family. In order to gain freedom, one needs to confront the hindrance or restraint by speaking out and accepting the challenges. In Provoked and “The Disappearance”, the Indian woman and Kiranjita had been subject to their husbands abuse for many years and had not told anyone. This is because their husbands had prohibited their wives from learning English, which become a barrier for them to communicate and show the details of the situation to others. This led them to bury their suffering and pretend their lives were happy. If they expressed their problems earlier, they would not beat up. Nonetheless, they chose to continue to live under their husband’s dominant until major event occurred to change their lives. In “The Disappearance”, the Indian woman decided to escape from her husband and seek out a new life. In Provoked, Kiranjita led her husband resulting into death while she was convicted to murder and sent to the jail. At once she felt she is free as she can be the one she wanted to be. In Provoked, Kiranjita states, “I came out my husband’s jail and enter the jail of law, it is here that at last that I have found a kind of freedom” (Provoked). This signifies that she has more emotional freedom in the jail than in the house as she can finally open her mouth and open her heart to voice her thoughts. Starek's Disappearance

...On a cold and sunny afternoon in mid-November 1952, Estragon “Gogo” Belmont and Vladimir “Didi” Starek were seen walking down a country road on their way to meet their friend “Godot” and have not been seen since. This case report details their disappearance over 50 years ago and its aftermath. Little is known of the circumstances surrounding their disappearance; detectives only know that they lived in Fourcés, France with their families prior to their vanishing. Their case is one of the most prolific among French detectives, due to the mysterious identities of the men and of the person they were seeking, “Godot.” As family members dwindle and the men’s stories start to fade into the history books as yet another cold case, new eyewitness accounts and personal writings bring new information about the duo, shedding some light on potential reasons for their disappearance. Estragon Belmont was known as an eccentric child, which caused him to behave erratically later in life. Belmont’s aunt told police when he vanished that Estragon was “prone to inaction most of the time. Then he’d get a sudden idea in his head and go off on an adventure,...

The Disappearance of Childhood

...Initial Thread In lesson 3, the presenter discussed Neil Postman's article, "The Disappearance of Childhood". I agree that electronic media, such as television fails to show children in their place. Children are exhibiting various behaviors that do not represent God and what he wants for his people. The presentation states, according to Postman, "When literature disappears, education disappears. When education disappears, shame disappears." Children are no longer shameful of their actions, not because of be uneducated, it is because society accepts the behaviors and allows it to continue. Understanding the minds of the young will help one to be able to minister according to God's word. Raising children as if they are your own in the right direction will help our youth to be what they once were. Literature is very important for Christians and for everyone. Gaining insight on how to be a more spiritual person and even including spiritual literature in your daily lives in order to add more spirituality to one’s family can ensure that we bring the child back to childhood. Watching children act like and carry themselves as children is what Christians want to see. Children are our children’s role model and some want to reflect the ones that are seen. As a parent, I understand Postman’s point and by wanting to working the educational system, I know how easily influenced our children are. Bringing the importance back to literature in education is going to take a lot of time...

Mayans Disappearance

...they declined so rapidly, from the late eighth through the end of the ninth century, something unknown happened, normal cities in the southern lowlands were abandoned, and by A.D. 900, Mayan civilization in that area had collapsed. The reason for this mysterious decline is unknown, though scholars have developed several different and similar theories (History.com). Many people have participated in the quest to find the reason for their mysterious vanish act, a variety of explanations have come to the surface. Some of these could have included “overpopulation and overuse of the land, endemic warfare and drought” all of these could have been the reason for their dissaperance (History.com). Some scholars believe the only reason from their disappearance is because of a dramatic climate change that resulted in a massive drought that hit the Mayan cities. To test their hypothesis Arizona State University analyzed archaeological information from across the Yucatan to reach a better understanding of the environmental conditions when the area was abandoned. During their research they found, severe rain reductions in this area, and a rapid rate of deforestation. Deforestation is when a forest or wooded area is reduced in size rapidly. We know the Mayans did this by burning and chopping down more and more forest to clear land for agriculture. Another way Mayans set themselves to certain...

Being descended from Mayans, I have a great curiousness on many aspects about my heritage. I would take advantage of this opportunity to learn and observe the Mayans and their culture. Learning their basic routines and day to day activities would enhance my knowledge over the culture and allow for understanding of what caused their disappearance. Rainsford's Disappearance

...Rainsford faked his disappearance and swam back to the island where General Zaroff lived and hid while the general ate. “General Zaroff had an exceedingly good dinner in his great paneled dining hall that evening. With it he had a bottle of Pol Roger and half a bottle of Chambertin. Two slight annoyances kept him from perfect enjoyment. One was the thought that it would be difficult to replace Ivan; the other was that his quarry had escaped him; of course the American hadn’t played the game--so thought the general as he tasted his after-dinner liqueur. In his library he read, to soothe himself, from the works of Marcus Aurelius. At ten he went up to his bedroom. He was deliciously tired, he said to himself, as he locked himself in....

The corners of this legendary triangle were between three axis points: Miami, Florida; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Bermuda. After some question this so-called triangle gained the name "Devils Triangle," serving to peoples superstitions that the devil was fooling with lost travelers. It also brought to question whether aliens had a selected spot on earth for abduction or could it be a vortex that warps the living to another dimension. The Mysterious Bermuda Triangle

...ocean off the coasts. None of the found planes were reported missing. That could be because of the numerous amounts of planes that disappear in the Bermuda Triangle. Charles Berlitz explains the number that disappear, "In the period 1974-76 more than six hundred yachts and other pleasure craft have disappeared off the coasts of the United States, a considerable percentage of these losses occurring within the Bermuda Triangle"(13). He also talks about an interview with the press, "Recently, during a press interview in San Francisco, I was asked by a reporter whether any disappearances had been noted recently. I replied that a plane had vanished the previous weekend suggesting that the disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle, far from being a footnote to the past history of the sea, are still continuing on the average of a plane about every two weeks and a ship or yacht almost weekly"(15). There are many disappearances within the Bermuda Triangle that we can't be told about. (Only because they happen to the Navy or the Coast Guard.) "These probable reasons include the...

Pregnancy During Dirty War

...started as a result of economic and political insecurity that ensued from public disorder beginning in 1969 (Chasteen). The Dirty War lasted from 1976 to 1983 and began as a result of a military coup of a government that was put into action during the presidency of Isabel Martinez de Peron in 1974. The purpose of the military coup was to develop a stabilized government by systematically removing leftist activists, seen to be “terrorists” (Finchelstein). The Dirty War involved the systematic kidnapping, murder, and torture of thousands of citizens including pregnant women and children. The Dirty War involved kidnapping, murder, and torture of thousands of citizens that were virtually invisible to the public and as a result called "disappearances”. Captives from all walks of life were systematically tortured, raped and murdered, sometimes drowned and other times buried in mass graves. Approximately 30% of the disappeared were women. Some were abducted with their small children, and some were pregnant, or became so while in detention, usually through rape by guards and torturers (Finchelstein). Pregnant prisoners were routinely kept alive until they had given birth. Hundreds of pregnant women were forced to give birth in secret detention centers before “disappearing.” Subsequently their newborns were given to military families or allies, who raised them with a completely different identity. Many pregnant women were kidnapped, and in captivity they endured all kinds of...

Though Gaddis first came up with the phrase, a much more famous name propelled in into international popularity a decade later. Charles Berlitz also had a strong interest in the paranormal.
