Mutual funds generate returns in three ways: through dividend payments to shareholders, distribute capital gains resulting from the sale of securities within the fund, and through mutual fund share price appreciation (p. 611). 2. Open-end mutual funds differ in the fact that they are open to investors which means they will sell shares to investors at any time (p. 609). They also allow investors to sell the shares back to the fund at any time which closed-end cannot (p. 609). 3. Load funds are promoted by registered representatives of brokerage firm, who earn a sales charge upon the investments in the fund between 3 and 8.5 percent (p. 615). Investment Strategy and Portfolio Management

...securities. Investors in Kaplan are yet to start making withdrawals from the fund but are due to begin in June 2012. This report looks at current issues in the investment environment in the UK, Europe, and the rest of the world which have an impact on Kaplan’s operations. It also examines strategic asset allocation and investment strategies that Kaplan should employ to achieve its goals. In addition, the report recommends areas in which the fund’s management should actively manage investments and those areas in which passive management would be the better option. Overview of the Investment Environment In recent years, the global fund sector has continued to register robust growth in many countries with developed financial markets. Collective investment schemes are becoming the most preferred investment vehicles for investors because of their obvious advantages including diversification, professional management of investments, liquidity and investment advice for investors and superior returns (Roll, 2008). Indeed, as by the end of 2011, the global investment fund industry was worth US $11.7 trillion which translates to 17 percent of primary securities holdings around the world. Roles of Imf and World Bank

...Q5) International Monetary Fund (IMF) role is to stabilize the international exchange rates and promote liberal economic policies. IMF will also provide short-term loan to assist members to overcome short-term imbalance of payment problems. On the other hand, World Bank offers loans to members to finance productive investments as well as assisting developing countries in its economy so as to reduce poverty within the country. Singapore joins both IMF and World Bank under the Bretton Woods Agreements Acts in 1966, 3 August. Before we join to become IMF as a member, during the Singapore-Malaya separation, we had sought for their technical assistance and to act as a broker in the negotiation with Malaysia for a common currency and banking system. In order to so, IMF first conducted a preliminary study to identify the concerns of Singapore and Malaysia regarding the common currency issue. IMF then acts as a broker in the final round of negotiations between 10 June 1966 and 5 July 1966. Before joining World Bank as a member, Singapore had sought for 2 loans where the first loan of US$15 million was used for the construction of the first phase of the Pasir Panjang ‘B’ Power Station and the second loan of US$6.8 million was used to construct Johor River Water Project. As a pre-requisite for the loan, the World Bank then requested our government to set up statutory authority (Public Utilities Board [PUB]) to manage the utilization and repayment of the loan. The advantages...

Portfolio Composition

...Portfolio Composition Portfolio Composition These days there are all kinds of investments. There are equities, options, bonds, and many others that can go into a selection for any kind of investment vehicle be it an index like the Dow 30, or a mutual fund like MYHAX from Mainstay. What makes things more complicated is when people need to contend with not only the selection process, but also issues with regulation and what the parent company would like to see. Classifications coupled with the current investment environment can make for a very complicated investment selection process. This paper will go into detail about some of how that process can affect organizational decisions concerning portfolio composition. It will choose a Dow 30 organization and the mutual fund, MYHAX from Mainstay as examples. The kinds of assets a mutual fund will buy are first brought about by a prospectus. This is a document that states all of the things the mutual fund managers can do when they get investors funds. They are bound by this document to invest the way it says they will. For the most part, the assets they are going to buy are somewhat laid out in this document. For a mutual fund like MYHAX, they are buying discounted bonds, or what some might refer to as junk bonds. The manager is MacKay Shields LLC, in fact, they are so good at what they do that same management was hired by First Trust portfolios to manage FSD, an ETF. They pick asset classes as it says on the prospectus. They...
