July 17 2012 The Godfather The film opens up with Don Corleone; the head of the family oversees his daughter’s wedding. Michael his last child had just returned from the war, but he doesn’t intend to join the family business, later he becomes the savior of Corleone’s family. 2. Turk a drug dealer requests Vito for investment and protection of his drug business through his political connections but Vito declines and disapproves the drug business. Vito says that his business [gambling] does not conflict with Turk’s. Later we see Vito sending Luca Brasi to spy on Tattaglia family but he doesn’t return. During chrismas, we see Michael and Kay celebrating and buying gifts while on the other hand Hagen is kidnapped, Sollozzo tries to assassinate Vito which lands him in the hospital. Michael stands as godfather during christening of Connie and Carlo’s son. As the christening proceeds, Moe Greene is assassinated on Michael’s orders. After christening Michael questions Carlo on his involvement in setting his brother’s [Sonny] murder and Carlo confesses he was approached by Barzini.Michael orders that he goes back to Vegas and he is escorted to the car, Clemenza kills him. Connie confronts Michael of her husband’s murder but Michael denies it. 3. Women in Corleone’s family were not involved in family business. Sonny is a married man but he fools around with other women. The role of the women in Corleone family is to cook and have children. Connie [Vito’s daughter] is married to an abusive husband. Even though she is Vito’s daughter she has no place in the family business.Luca Brasi’s wish for Vito’s daughter’s wedding is that the couple’s child be a “masculine child.” Towards the end Vito tells Michael that women and children can be weak but not men. 4. Vito’s morality is first portrayed when Bonasera asks him for justice when his daughter was beaten and transfigured. Bonasera states that the State has denied him justice, he asks Don Corleone to kill them but Corleone points out that, “that is not justice. Your daughter is still alive.” Bonasera tempts him with money but Don is above that. Don tells Bonasera that he will give him justice as a gift on his daughter’s wedding day. Though Don is violent, he refuses to do “murder for money,” as seen in Bonasera’s case. He also refuses to participate in Sollozzo’s drug business because he knew that wasn’t right. He wishes Sollozzo good luck in his business. This portrays that the family and his integrity are more important than money. He knew if he accepted the offer he could be risking his life. Michael started as a civilian to becoming the savior of Corleone’s family. Michael distances himself from the family business. He tells Kay a story about Jonny who wanted to be released from a band but the bandleader refused. Michael says, “My father made but he refused…..Luca Brasi held a gun to his head, and my father assured him that either his brains or his signature would be on the contract.” Michael tells Kay, “That’s my family, but not me.”After two assassinations attempts are made against his father, Michael volunteers to kill the two men responsible of this conspiracy-Sollozzo and the corrupt police captain. Michael was prepared to sacrifice his ethic in order to survive their enemies. 5. Michael in Silican is struck by the beauty of one of the girls-Apollonia. Michael tells her father at the restaurant that he meant no disrespect or offense to him or to his daughter when describing her beauty .Michael tells Vitelli, ”My name is Michael, I am an American hiding in Sicily…..there are many people who’d pay a lot of money for that information….but then you would lose a father….instead of gaining a husband.” Michael may sound threatening but this reflects his authority and strength which we see him use to save his family. After Michael introduces himself at Vitelli’s home, they develop a romantic relationship. In a village church in Sicily, Michael marries Apollonia in a traditional wedding. Michael’s enemies learn of his whereabouts and plant a bomb in his car. As Apollonia prepares to start the car, she is killed in the explosion that was intended for Michael. 7. Religion in this film acts as a protection that guides the family. Baptism of Connie’s son covers Michael’s slaughter of his enemies. Michael renounces Satan after Clemenza kills Don in the elevator. As the priest pours the holy water on the child, blood pours from the bodies of Michael’s victims. Ritual is portrayed with Michael standing with the child, the priest and a big crowd of witnesses, but the murders represent Michael stepping in the same title, ‘Godfather’ as the role of the leader in his crime family. The priest as he finishes the baptism tells Michael to go in peace and may the Lord be with him. Michael gazes at the priest for a moment, understanding the irony. The outward expressions of a comprised religion in this film are ineffective in stopping the violence.

Religion and God Our Father Almighty Wohoo

...thing I have learned that is something new to me is that commitment is one important aspect of living a religious life. One should be committed in a sense that when you live out God’s teachings, you must fully devote yourself to being a portrayal of his life. Being committed not only resembles Jesus’ devotion to his Father’s plan, but it also resembles your commitment to the people around you. C. What message/s is/are trying to convey to the readers? - The message that the author, Stephen Bevans is that to live a religious life, one must not go into priesthood to achieve this. Throughout the article, the author has proven that living religiously that does not only revolve around priesthood. On the contrary, religious life is being one with God and living out his teaching and applying them to everyday challenges and situations. D. Identify value/s you have...

God as the Father

...reference God. To me, the most significant and meaningful term used for God is “Father”. Growing up, I had a father figure, but he wasn’t a very good one. I won’t really get into that. And although I had him as a father figure, I didn’t count him as someone to look up to. So for me, when the Bible eludes God as Father, it strikes home. There are many incidences where this reference occurs, and sometimes it’s very subtle. In my opinion, I believe a father should have certain qualities that include forgiveness, being kind, being reliable, and caring for their child. All of these are exemplified in the Bible when God is talked about and talked to. Forgiveness is displayed throughout the entire Bible since God allows for repentance. However, one line that sticks out to me is in the Book of Numbers. It says “Then the Lord said ‘I do forgive, just as you asked me…’” (Numbers 14:20) This is an important factor in fatherhood because I feel a father should always forgive you and still love you, no matter what you do. That is the main reason it stood out to me. With my real father, if I did something he didn’t approve of I would be judged and looked down on, which is not right. Now, the motto I live by is “forgive me to gain forgiveness”. I’m not going to waste my time with someone who won’t forgive, but wants forgiveness. Being kind is a big deal as well because with kindness comes a closer relationship with another. That is why God is considered...

Symbolism of God Father Death

...is constant, and death is fair. The father in this story searches for a godfather for his thirteenth child, a son. The first person he comes to is God. He sees God as unfair and biased toward poor people. He states he does not want him as the godfather because he feels God does not disperse wealth equally; this stems from him being poor and having twelve and now a thirteenth child. As the father comes across the Devil as his next choice, he discredits the Devil by saying “you trick men and lead them astray” (Grimm 12). To speculate on this, the father may have had an experience with the devil himself, or his beliefs may stem from biblical readings. The next possible suitor is Death. The father accepts Death as the god father; Death treats all people equally and does not discriminate. Poor and rich alike are taken without biases by Death. The father thinks this is Hunt 2 the one to be the godfather based on his own opinions of how good, evil, and death are represented. There are several noteworthy symbols in this story. To begin with there is the thirteenth child. Thirteen has been for centuries marked as an unlucky number. Dating back to biblical times at the last supper, where twelve disciples and Jesus sat down to eat and Judas arose to betray Jesus (Guiley). Only twelve were bonded. Judas, because he betrayed Jesus represented sin, rebellion, and subsequently the number thirteen (Elev8). The father may have...

Holy Spirit

...The “Person” of the Holy Spirit Of the three “persons” to the concept of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit is often shrouded in more mystery than the other two. While the person of God the “Father” as the creator and sustainer of creation is well established in the scripture and the history of Judaism and Christianity, and while the person of Jesus the “Son” as an actual person in the course of human history is well documented in history and scripture, the person of the Holy Spirit is a person whose characteristics are not well defined. While the responsibilities of the Holy Spirit are often documented throughout scripture, the question of how to address the Holy Spirit is sometimes vague. While there is plenty of scriptural attestation to the Holy Spirit, and while Jesus does use personal pronouns to describe the Holy Spirit, the modern depictions of the Spirit are often amorphous, lacking definition, and sometimes even pictures that do not infer personhood as much as substance, such as depictions of the Holy Spirit as a, “tounge of fire.” Some theologians have pointed to the scripture to attest to the personhood of the Holy Spirit in the same way as Jesus and the Father (with some scripture point to personal pronouns such as “he”) while others are more concerned with the function of the Holy Spirit rather than the form. This begs the question as to whether or not it truly matters what the Holy Spirit is rather than who the Holy Spirit is. The Holy Spirit is first mentioned...

...Religious Calendar is Pentecost Sunday!!! What in the world is Pentecost??? The word “ Pentecost” designates the 50th day after Passover, which was a Feast Day. Also known as the Feast of Weeks or Feast of Harvest. It was on this day, in the Book of Acts, that the Holy Spirit was poured out on 120 Followers of Christ who were gathered in an Upper Room in Jerusalem. It was on this day that the Church was born, in a burst of flames and Glory. This is a day that ought to be never forgotten. You see, it is said that The Average Christian And the Average Church are Somewhere Bogged Down Between Calvary and Pentecost. Yes. They have been to Calvary for Pardon, but they Have Not Been to Pentecost For Power. Bethlehem means God With Us. Calvary means God For Us. But Pentecost means God In Us. Now, Those statements will transform your understanding of the person and the work of the Holy Ghost. I believe that the average Christian is much like the Ephesians believers when the Apostle Paul came to them in Acts 19:2 and said to them - Did You Receive The Holy Ghost When You Believed? They Replied that they didn’t even know that there was a Holy Ghost. Many Christians do not understand the role of the Holy Spirit and they have not appropriated the power of the Holy Spirit in their own personal life. I believe that the churches today are Fat and Out Of Breath Through Prosperity. The church around us seems to be muscle-bound through over-organization. But what we Need Today Is Again - The Wind And...

Life

...tells one of His disciples what He came to bring or restore to the lost, “I am the way, the truth and the life…” is what the Saviour says. In John 3:16, we are told that God the Father loved the world so much that He “gave His only begotten Son [Jesus] to the world that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” it’s amazing that the only condition to getting this eternal life is simply believing in Jesus. Apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 1:13 that “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise” now Paul here simply echoes what is written in John 3:16 that all one has to do is to believe in Jesus and thus have eternal life. Paul however also tells us how and at what point does God our Heavenly Father seals us and marks us as His children. Paul tells us that when we “believed” the gospel of our salvation and in Ephesians 1:5, he tells us that this is something that our Heavenly Father predestined “according to the riches of His grace” and if you read from verse 4 you see that the motive of this predestinated plan of salvation was love, something which is also revealed in John 3:16 and also John in his epistle wrote about if you read 1 John 3:1. The love in which God has showered upon us is something that one could go on and on about because his love is everlasting. Any ways back to the Life [Jesus]. John wrote very intimately about...

Sons of God

...| The Sons of God | | A Sermon (No. 339) Delivered on Sabbath Morning, October 7th, 1860, by the REV. C. H. Spurgeon At Exeter Hall, Strand. "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God; and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together."—Romans 8:16, 17. Y brethren, what a contrast there is between the present and future estate of the child of God! The believer is here the brother to the worm; in heaven he shall be next of kin to the angels. Here he is covered with the sweat and dust which he acquired by Adam's fall; there his brow shall be bright with the immortality which is conferred upon him by the resurrection of Christ. Here the heir of heaven is unknown; he is in disguise, full often clad in the habiliments of poverty, but there his princely character shall be discerned and acknowledged, he shall be waited upon by angels, and shall share in the admiration which the universe shall pour upon the glorified Redeemer. Well said our poet just now, "It doth not yet appear, how great we must be made." I think I need not remind you of your condition here below; you are too conversant with it, being hourly fretted with troubles, vexed with your own infirmities, with the temptations of Satan, and with all the allurements of this world. You are quite conscious that this is not your rest. There are too many thorns in your nest, to...

...image of God and explain how this belief affects the way someone with a business degree would interact with someone within their field of study. I will also discuss that just like a manager has their employees come to them during a critical decision making process, we turn to God for his guidance during a time when a decision that we need to make could be a life changing one. Should we turn to our managers for help even when the decision is easy? Should we pray to God more even when times are good? Since mankind is created in the image of God, I should be more understanding to my employees when they make a mistake. Who am I not to forgive an employee when they make a mistake on a project? Is our God not a forgiving God? As a manger I am not above the rules nor above God. A manager will make mistakes just like each and every one of us will. They will be held accountable just like we will be held accountable for our sins by God. Even though we are being held accountable, it does not mean that we have not been forgiven for our mistake at work and forgiven by God. “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.’ ‘But if you do not forgive men of their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” (Matthew 6:14-15) An employee does not want a mistake to be held over their heads. They want to use it as a training piece and move on from that mistake. A good manager will not hold their mistake against them just as God will not...

Biblical Worldview Assignment

...Biblical Worldview Essay Theology 104 Introduction: A foundational aspect of the Christian faith is the belief that humanity is created in the image of God. Only three times is the term “image of God” found within the Bible. Genesis 1:26-27 and Genesis 9:6 both speak of man being created in the “image of God”. Jesus is also referenced as the image of God in 2 Corinthians 4:4. We can assume that the scriptures contained in Genesis refer to how man reflects God’s character. The image of God in man gives us the ability to discern morally. Some of God’s characteristics are; He is good, faithful, loving, merciful, patient, and wise. Being created in his image gives us these characteristics. Example 1: At my current place of employment I do my best to be a reflection of God’s character. One way that I live out being created in the image of God is by being a faithful and honest employee. I work in an environment where it is easy to perform at the status quo or slightly below that. Theft of merchandise is also a problem that affects everyone at my workplace. “You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another” Leviticus 19:11. Many of my coworkers do just enough to get by with no real interest in helping anyone but themselves. I do my best to always show up on time, do more than is expected of me, and most importantly, have a positive attitude while doing it. One of God’s characteristics is that he is patient....
