The History of the Sandwich
Well before any written records were kept sandwiches go way back in the ancient times. Not always were they called sandwiches to start though. Most people would admire John Montagu as the creator of this so called sandwich. Even though sandwiches were not imminent in many cookbooks, they originally started as being considered “restaurant fare” in England. Even though according to the rules of sciences governing nutrition some says the sandwich should never have been developed. John Montagu a well-known Englishman and the 4th Earl of Sandwiches was known as a gambler. He once went 24 hours straight playing cards and gambling. During this time in 1762, while on his gambling streak he was hungry and wanted something that would not be a mess or get in the way of his games. So he instructed the cook to prepare such a thing. The cook later proceeded back with a “sandwich” which consists of just their normal everyday meat between two pieces of toast. This was the perfect finger food to go along with his gambling as it required no use of utensils, and he could still keep his cards in one hand and eat in the other. Even though the cook presented such a meal he was not named as the real creator of the sandwich and was not recorded for successors. Over the years the sandwich evolved too much more than just toast and meat. Recipes were not commonly used in cookbooks in America during the creations of new recipes because many colonial cooks during the 18th century did not think highly of mimicking the British culinary developments and styles of the sandwich. Though some American’s may still have made some type of sandwich they were not blabbing about it in public. After the Revolution and the War of 1812 during the late 1830’s, the Americans began speaking and creating sandwiches widely and publicly without considering copying the British anymore. But there was a difference between American sandwiches and English sandwich. Americans meat of choice was ham and the English traditionally used beef. Now in today’s time cookbooks are full of hundreds of recipes for sandwiches with very different ingredients from the traditional just meat and toast sandwiches. Some of the first sandwiches to be made into recipes were the BLT, and the Club. The term “BLT” , which was known as slang was said to come from the Ancient Romans dating back to the 16th century. The BLT was a sandwich that consists of toasted bread, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, and bacon. As for the Club which is very similar to the BLT, it is made up of three pieces of toasted bread to include mayonnaise, turkey and lettuce on the first layer topped with a piece of bread then another layer of the same ingredients but tomatoes and bacon were added as well before topping it with the last piece of toasted bread. These sandwiches were greatly enjoyed and made often. So for John Montagu he contributed greatly to recipes for sandwiches used worldwide today. Even though each culture and country has put their own spin on sandwiches it is and will always have the same concept of the original meat and toast creation. As time continues sandwiches will never nonexistent or stop being made, if anything hundreds of new sandwich recipes will probably continue being created.
