...door to a rich yet shy figure named Gatsby. Gatsby throws parties all the time, but nobody seems to know who he is. As the story goes on, we find out that Gatsby is in love with Daisy, Nick’s cousin. Behind all of this, Fitzgerald uses light imagery to convey Gatsby’s love for Daisy to show the hope involved in this relationship. A green light across a lake doesn’t seem like anything, right? In the novel, Gatsby is caught by Nick staring across the lake at a green light with his hands in the air. Nick later realizes that the green light across the lake is Daisy’s house. Furthermore, Jordan, Nicks friend, reveals that Gatsby bought the house on that particular spot so Daisy can see it lit up. The green light in the novel represents hope, which later we find out, is part of Daisy and Gatsby’s relationship. “He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and far as I was from him I could...

...In the novel, “The Great Gatsby”, by F.Scott Fitzgerald there is plenty of unending hope to go around. For example, Myrtles unending hope to be with Tom isn't as interesting as Gatsby's unending hope for Daisy. Gatsby goes over the top just to get Daisy's attention, first he buys a Mansion just to throw parties for her, he also gets to know Nick just to use him to get to Daisy, and lastly he forces Daisy to tell Tom that she never loved him. Gatsby had already planned every single step in his head that he never realized how bizarre his unending hope for Daisy actually was. “There was music from my neighbor's house through the summer nights. In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among whispering and champagne and the stars....

...“‘Texts explore, support or subvert notions of identity.’ Discuss this statement making detailed reference to the excerpt from The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros.” • The except “The Three Sisters” is chapter 41 from the novel The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros published in 1984. • The chapter starts of by talking about three sisters, aunts, and they are las comadres and that is a Spanish term given to Godmother, ‘one with laughter like tin and on with eyes of a cat and one with hands like porcelain’. This gave a thought of maybe witches and further research of the novel/chapter reveals that they are representations of the “three fates” of ancient mythology and these are women who decide, death, birth and lengths of lives. • Lucy and Rachel’s baby sister died, and there was wake or a viewing that happened in their home, ‘anybody who had ever wondered what color the walls were came and came to look at that little thumb of a human in a box like candy’. • Esperanza then makes a wishes and the sister who had ‘marble hands’ called her over to tell her something. o “When you leave you must remember to come back for the others. A circle, understand? You will always be Esperanza. You will always be Mango Street. You can’t erase what you know. You can’t forget who you are. … You must remember to come back. For the ones who cannot leave as easily as you.” • “The story approaches the fantastical here (in Esperanza’s point of view), as the sisters seem to read...

...Looking at the first few pages this quote really captivated my attention. If you were to rapidly read it, there would be no meaning but when you seek deeper, there is. This long quote mostly describes the perfect house Esperanza’s family dreams of living in one day. Although the description is not the actual setting of the book it builds imagery for the reader. The words she chooses to describe the house illustrates the splendid neighborhood with all the big houses looking similar and where all the neighbors get along. It’s those types of houses people can only dream about. The choice of house compared to her old houses allows me to infer that her family went through some hard times. The mood of the story seems to be hopeful. I say this because...

...the American Dream are Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club and House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III, coming from the late eighties and late nineties, respectively. However, unlike the previous novels mentioned, these novels express the success in pursuing the ‘correct’ American Dream. Despite the contrasting plots of the two novels, both are able to depict the Dream as the ultimate hope and motivation of the main characters. In House of Sand and Fog, Andre Dubus III plays around with the concept of the American Dream by using the house on Bisgrove Street to serve as an ultimate symbol of the American Dream. Although the main characters’ American Dreams are dissimilar, both characters, Kathy and Mr. Behrani, use the Dream as their greatest motivation and hope throughout the novel. For Mr. Behrani, this dream is a quest for the reclamation of his youth and dignity. The reason Mr. Behrani had come to the United States in the first place is because of the hopeless state of his home country. Despite having the ability to flee to anywhere in the world for refuge, Mr. Behrani chooses America because of the hope so commonly associated with the American Dream. Later in the novel, the acquisition of the house seems to reinvigorate Mr. Behrani when he feels most hopeless concerning his dwindling supply of money. Dubus III highlights the hope of the American Dream when Behrani says, “Perhaps it is the seized property [referring to the house on Bisgrove Street] I must begin to view, the used, the...

...to the House of Commons I beg to move, That this House welcomes the formation of a Government representing the united and inflexible resolve of the nation to prosecute the war with Germany to a victorious conclusion. On Friday evening last I received His Majesty's commission to form a new Administration. It as the evident wish and will of Parliament and the nation that this should be conceived on the broadest possible basis and that it should include all parties, both those who supported the late Government and also the parties of the Opposition. I have completed the most important part of this task. A War Cabinet has been formed of five Members, representing, with the Opposition Liberals, the unity of the nation. The three party Leaders have agreed to serve, either in the War Cabinet or in high executive office. The three Fighting Services have been filled. It was necessary that this should be done in one single day, on account of the extreme urgency and rigour of events. A number of other positions, key positions, were filled yesterday, and I am submitting a further list to His Majesty to-night. I hope to complete the appointment of the principal Ministers during to-morrow. the appointment of the other Ministers usually takes a little longer, but I trust that, when Parliament meets again, this part of my task will be completed, and that the administration will be complete in all respects. I considered it in the public interest to suggest that the House should...

...With Slavery Comes Hope The slavery stories portrayed in the short stories of Amnesty International delivered a newfound empathy for the people that have gone through these horrors. Article four is essential when discussing the Universal Decleration of Human Rights due to the overwhelming amount of slavery that has taken place around the world already. Although these are written, and encouraged to never be taken lightly, they still happen around the world today. Slavery will always be prevalent around the world in some way or another. In the short stories, a life of hope mixed with terror is a constant part of these people’s daily lives. Katya is one of the women portrayed in the short story under article four. In this story she is held a slave to the underground sex trafficking world. She was promised a waitressing job in the Balkans but instead was put to use in ways she never thought would happen to her. After Katya realized she wasn’t going to be a waitress she tried to leave, “So she decided she wanted to run back to mummy” (pg. 37 Lewycka). The owner wasn’t about to let her go after having spent good money on her. The owner of the whorehouse had Branko, the owners nephew beat her and eventually fractured some of her ribs and broke her foot. The owner seemed fine with this mistreatment of Katya but could not condone the other more horrendous treatment of her. “The bruises in her mouth and cigarette burns on her cunt I can’t condone” (pg. 38 Lewycka) The owner continually...

...The novel That Eye, The Sky thoroughly explores many different aspects of hope and faith through religious beliefs and symbolism and on how it can impact people’s lives, however faith is what is really trying to be expressed through this novel. Ort’s father, Sam, went into a come as a result of a car accident. Ort looked up to his father as some kind of God like figure and now that he’s gone, Ort has looked to the sky for help. The sky and the light play an important role in understanding and what is happening. The light above Ort’s house that only Ort can see is representing religion. Ort perceives the sky to be the eye of God, creator of all things and the source of light in human beings. This same light is also represented in the sheep seen over his house which further enhances the fact that he is being watched day and night. Winton is trying to emphasise faith in God in this novel by sending his message using the story of an innocent boy’s life to further support the fact that faith is around us all the time in the simplest forms. The simplest, yet most powerful message is shown in how Ort looks up to the bright sky as if it is God. The light that the sky gives off is also portrayed in the sheep, as if they were some kind of fluffy white cloud, that are above Ort’s house, which develops the idea of the fact that Ort is being watched over by God day and night. This also leads to a religious symbolism as this small light could be equivalent to the Star of Bethlehem shining...

... Habitat for Humanity is a leader in battling poverty housing. Since being founded in 1976, it has helped to build or repair over 600,000 homes, sheltering more than 3 million people worldwide on five continents and in 3,000 communities. Habitat for Humanity’s vision is to help “build a world where everyone has a decent place to live. “ Built on Christian beliefs, Habitat’s mission statement reflects these beliefs as the organization “seeks to put God’s love into action, by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope.” However, Habitat does not discriminate against other religions, nor do they discriminate based on race, gender, color or sexual orientation. The organization sends a message of hope to the more than 2 billion people worldwide who live in slum housing, with more than 100 million being homeless, that they can and deserve to live in a decent, healthy and energy efficient home. In order to make this hope a reality, Habitat uses a volunteer workforce and donated materials to make these homes happen. Under the supervision of a trained and experienced leader on site, volunteers are assigned tasks such as building the framework, putting up drywall, installing cabinets, and painting. The potential homeowner is also required to contribute approximately 500 hours of “sweat equity” into the building of their home, as part of the requirements for owning a Habitat home. The selection process for choosing who will receive the opportunity to own...

...The one window in the apartment represents the one opportunity that the Younger family has to improve their lives, buying the house in Clybourne Park. There are numerous examples of how Hansberry uses the single window to symbolize the Youngers’ only opportunity. One of these is in the opening stage directions: “The sole natural light the family may enjoy in the course of a day is only that which fights its way through this little window” (I. i, 24). This quote says that the only window in the Youngers’ tiny apartment is providing all of the light and hope that the family needs. That single window in the apartment gives the family Another way Hansberry used the window to signify the family’s opportunity is when Beneatha gets angry and yells at Walter for losing the rest of the insurance money. “Then [Mama] closes the window, straightens her body with effort and turns around to her children” (III. i, 139). When Mama closes the window, she is essentially “shutting out” the family’s opportunity to get a better life. When Walter loses the money, the entire family loses their...

...现代欧美戏剧名篇赏析 Discuss about the Miracle in A Doll’s House 院 系:经济学院 专 业:国际金融系 姓 名:陈卓佩 学 号:11307100212 日 期:2013年6月6日 Abstract This article focuses on the miracle Nora mentions in Act Three of A Doll’s House. The miracle Nora hopes for “in terror and hope” is for her husband to change and accept responsibility. But Torvald’s initial reaction towards her sacrifice is panic, then incomprehension. This makes Nora realize that she is only a doll dependent on man. The miracle she has always been waiting for never comes. However, I think the fact that Nora decides to leave and live independently itself is a miracle in that social and historical context. Some people doubt about whether Nora will succeed in becoming independent. Judging from her personality and what she has done, I believe she will. This miracle then spread to the whole Europe, China and other countries, which greatly affected the feminist movement. Key Words:A Doll’s House, miracle, Nora, feminist movement Discuss about the Miracle in A Doll’s House 1.
