...not adapted to the changing times. On the other side of this picture you have individual people that what to experience what artist of music, movie and software present to the world. What I am presenting to you is world around illegal downloading of copyrighted material. The question I present to you is this, how can we bring both sides of this picture together with both sides being able to get what they want? To begin lets go back a few years to around 1998. I am sure most of you have heard of Napster. For those that didn’t think was a new file sharing program that was able to download copyright material digitally. The processed worked by taking small parts of the overall file from multiple sources and piecing them back together on your end as a whole file. This was a huge problem to the recording industry and as such saw their record sales fall. Instead of the recording industry trying to work with the leaders of Napster and other programs to come up with a solution, the recording industry along with some artist sued Napster for lost revenue. In the end Napster lost their court battle, but this was not the end of illegal downloading of copyrighted material. Since this time the recording, movie, software and pornographic industries have seen their profits continue to fall due to broadband internet becoming the norm. These industries have not changed their business model to adapt, but instead have increased the number of lawsuits against people that download content. In the...

...to exercise a monopoly on the use of product/creation/idea for a limited period of time. For most of companies, IPR is the only way to protect their products and compete in the worldwide market. Same as the companies, IPR encourage inventors to develop new technologies and ideas. • IPR infringement has reached a critical level in many countries. The sectors mostly hit by this phenomenon are software houses, luxury companies, music/movie industries, and pharmaceutical products. Illegal downloading of software, music, movies, and imitations & counterfeit products became one of the biggest problems for all these sectors which lead to large loses in terms of income. • The countries most affected by IPR infringements are China, North Korea, Russia, Brazil, and India. According to the Business Software Alliance, in China, 79% of the software and 85-90% of music records have been pirated. Issues: • There are two major problems related to IPR infringements for the companies: the loss in income and the loss of reputation/image. • The piracy market is flourishing despite all the laws which protect copyrights, trademarks, and so forth. • The Chinese government seems not so interested to protect IP until some of its domestic firms will start to be threatened by this phenomenon. Same policy is adopted by many other developing countries. • Without an adequate international system which protects efficiently the intellectual...

Laws and Regulations: There are some specific laws and regulations under which the movie rental business like Redbox should operate. But due to the growing popularity of renting videos through mail, online and kiosks, most of these laws will probably have to change or modified to fit the new way of people renting and watching movies. Age of Renters – This law for who can rent specific videos follow the same guidelines set by Motion Picture Association of America. These guidelines are based on their content, language, sexuality, violence and themes. Privacy Laws – This law protects the video rental records of individuals as the records can be damaging to a person’s reputation and they cannot be disclosed without written consent. Public exhibition – Videos and DVDs are not allowed to be publicly exhibited outsides of a persons home unless for non profit use or educational purposes without a license. Federal Copyright Act – This law governs how copyrighted materials can be used and distributed. The movie studios who own copyrights are the only parties who are authorized to license sites to display movies for protection of their intellectual properties. This paper will examine the impact, both positive and negative, that the internet has on the entertainment industry. Media coverage indicates that, among the entertainment industry, the film and music industries have been most affected by the World Wide Web. However, the other forms of the entertainment world have, albeit to a lesser extent, been affected as well. The least affected area of show business is theatre. ...Journal of Intellectual Property Rights Vol 18, September 2013, pp 457-464 Piracy in the Internet Age Nikita Hemmige† ILS Law College, Law College Rd, Pune 411 004, India Received 17 December 2012, revised 12 August 2013 The Internet has created boundary-less territories and has helped in evolving a unique method to share and transfer information, growth of e-commerce and in creating a global platform for all nations and its citizens. Online piracy is a major flipside to this development. Rampant intellectual property (IP) infringements by way of unlawful reproduction and unmonitored downloads is a matter of concern. It is significant to take note of the laws that various countries have enacted and enforced in order to curb or at least regulate online piracy and related activities. Further, though the Copyright Act, 1957 and Information Technology Act, 2000 in India deal with certain facets of piracy, they do not conclusively deal with this menace. It is the need of the hour for India to draft and enforce laws which will address the current problem and also take into consideration the technological advancements that are likely to give rise to more of such complex issues. Formulating such a law in the near future will be a welcome change and will definitely give India the IP advantage. Keywords: Online piracy, copyright infringement, jurisdictional barriers, Internet laws, intellectual property The Internet has become the first port of call for anyone in search...

Scott Bluemel Marketing Plan: Phase I Overview of the Organization The entertainment industry is a vastly changing business, although the ideology has stayed the same throughout history. Since the earliest documented cases started appearing, stories and music were used to overcome and surpass dark times in cultures throughout the world. In more recent historical examples, during the great depression, the largest break through for the entertainment industry began to show by way of movies, musicals, radio and early television. Movies really began to dawn as a way to escape the realities of everyday life and live vicariously in a world of wonder and enchantment, or love and drama, for those who had more serious worries in the real world. With the progression of technology, movies have become a literal escape, with millions of followers across the globe. The movie industry has made such dramatic leaps in technology that the demand for movies and theaters has grown largely over the past 20 years. At Regal Cinemas, being one of the largest franchises across the globe, business has been remarkable. “Regal Entertainment Group (NYSE: RGC) operates the largest and most geographically diverse theatre circuit in the United States, consisting of 6,862 screens in 538 theatres in 38 states and the District of Columbia as of February 21, 2013, with over 211 million attendees for the...
