The Internet is Bad...Or Not:
An Analysis of “What Adolescents Miss When We Let Them Grow Up In Cyberspace” by Brent Staples
The internet that I am using right now to type this essay has been a topic of controversy since it became available to the average person in the 1990’s. One of the largest issues that people(mostly adults) have with the internet, is the way it grabs children into its clutches and drags them into a swirling abyss of misinformation.
Anecdotal introductions are my favorite type of introduction, because theythe author a chance to share something of themselves with the reader. This can go long way, especially if the information they’re sharing relevant to the story. Staples starts off by introducing us to a social challenge of his childhood, which is common among us all as meeting a friend's parents. Wanting a chance with the girl of his dreams, he faces her extremely terrifying and intimidating father. Something that someone these days, would have been able to skirt around using the internet.
Of course there are positive aspects to the internet, as Staples mentions,“Teenagers these days are more connected to the world at large than than ever”. In that aspect the internet is an appealing construct because if used correctly it can end up bringing people together that would have probably never met in circumstances without the wide spread global communication. The internet was, according to Staples, created to “enrich our social lives”, which works well for elderly people and others who originally learned basic social skills.
Parent's inabilities or reluctances to monitor their children’s online social life things have gotten slightly more out of hand than they needed too. Though this essay was written in 2002, it is more relevant 12 years later than it was when

...companies localized monopoly power in order to correct for ‘natural monopoly-style’ market failures. The states argued that the cost advantages caused by overwhelming economies of scale allowed the winners to establish monopolies “naturally” threatening public well-being. This idea of a “public interest” and the “greater good” was extended to also regulate other critical public services such as the water and gas utilities. Recently, in January of 2014, a federal appeals court ruled that regulations enacted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) unfairly treated Internet services providers as if they were public utilities. This decision halted the expansion of these ideals to regulate additional industries, namely the Internet. This landmark decision begs the question, should the Internet be considered a public utility? If so, is this the best solution to the problems facing Americans regarding the Internet service provider industry? Before I jump into a discussion of what...

The Bad Effects of the Internet on the Teenagers

...The Bad Effects of The Internet On The Teenagers Brent Staples is an editorial writer for the New York Times. In “What Adolescents Miss When We Let Them Grow Up in Cyberspace”, Brent writes about how teenagers nowadays spend too much time on the Internet to communicate with each other, and forget to interact with families and friends in the real life. Using the Internet too much cost the teenagers don’t have socializing, the real world experience that would allow them to leave teenagers behind and grow into adulthood. (Staples 18) I strongly agree with Staples that many teenagers spend too much time on the Internet for chatting and playing online games than for studying and socializing. When teenagers spend too much time on the Internet, they will miss out the experience of talking face-to-face and don’t know how to communicate to a job later. Indeed, the Internet seriously takes away the socializing time of teenagers and makes them don’t have any social skills to communicate with the people in the real world. Over the past few months, I found out Facebook has become increasingly prominent in the lives of UC Davis students. Conversations are no longer made in real life person. Instead, many UC Davis students log in to their free Facebook accounts to communicate with each other. Moreover, I saw many of my friends send messages through Facebook to their next-door neighbor instead of walking a couple steps to meet with their neighbors face-to-face. They are seriously missed out...

Bad Effects of the Internet on Teens

...Less Face-to-Face Communication Young Soo Shim of the University of Southern Illinois compiled a study that highlights the impact of the Internet on teenage communication. The study, based on responses from students at an Illinois high school, found that some teens might attempt to use the Internet as a way to escape from the real world or avoid personal contact. As a result, the more time they spent using the Internet, the less likely was their desire to see and talk to with family members and friends. Cyberbullying Teens sometimes use the Internet to bully other teens. Sometimes it starts with insulting someone or sharing personal information about another teen on social networking sites in an attempt to embarrass them. It can escalate to stalking and physical violence. A 2010 ABC news report, "Mean Girls: Cyberbullying Blamed for Teen Suicides," called attention to cyberbullying, which means using social media sites and email to harass and ridicule others. The report says that this type of harassment has been responsible for teen suicides. Time and Risks When teens spend many hours per day using the Internet, they reduce the time they have to spend with family and on school work and physical activities. In addition, according to an article written by Kate Fogarty, assistant professor with the Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences at the University of Florida, a teen who goes online for two or more hours, three or more times a week, faces a higher risk of falling...

Internet Addiction

...Internet Addiction In today's world, most Americans use the internet daily for daily needs. It has become very common to go online because it makes research and socializing easier. The internet is a great place for social networking and meeting or communicating with people across the world. Nicholas Carr, author of the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid”, claims that using the internet can make people less intelligent. After spending a number of days researching on the topic of internet use, I have came to agree with Carr. I not only agree with him, that using the internet does make internet users less intelligent, I also believe that using the internet too often can make a person addicted to the internet. Once a person is addicted to the internet, they not only become less intelligent, like Carr believes, but they also develop mental and psychological problems. People should be more aware of internet addiction. The signs and symptoms should not be avoided when someone sees themself in the addiction situation. Once they become addicted, it is like a real drug, it will pull them in slowly and be hard to get away from. DSM IV and the International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) define addiction in terms of substance dependence or pathological gambling. To define internet addiction, it would be someone that meets at least three of the following criteria: tolerance, salience, withdrawal symptoms, difficulty controlling use, continued use despite negative consequences...

Along with the excellent opportunities for meaningful communication in this new atmosphere, the Internet has evolved as an open, democratic cyber society marked by free speech and volunteerism. It is a community gathering place for people to share ideas, concerns, stories and opinions, and to give help and assistance to one another. (Mills-Scofield) There has also arisen a series of problems. Whenever any major development in society is conceived, such as when telephones were introduced, problems ensue. ...Ads by Google ► Internet Dating ► Dating Chat Rooms ► Phone Dating ► Children Stories Home Our Blog About Us Contact Us Search Welcome to the Dangers of Internet Dating The day has come when internet dating is considered a legitimate way of meeting new people in the endless search for the right person. Chat rooms have replaced bar rooms, and internet dating sites and personal ads no longer have the "stigma" that they once did. You may still get a raised eyebrow when telling people you are using the internet for your search for the perfect date, but no where close to the reaction you would have gotten years ago. Internet dating has gained popularity by leaps and bounds, and unfortunately, so have the dangers and horror stories some have encountered. The anonymity of internet dating has afforded con artists a new playground for scams, and has allowed people to be anyone they think you want them to be because they are engaging you primarily through the written word. This site is not meant to bring forth the message that its impossible to find love through internet dating, but to inform people of the dangers that are out there. Internet dating is still a relatively new way of people connecting with people from all over the globe, and people need to understand the dangers out there so they can make their search a safe one. Social Network (Essay Analysis)

...Social Network Is social networking a bad thing? Going back in time to about forty years ago, there was no such thing as social networking. Technology has become a major part of society. It has also impacted the youth of this generation. Now social networking is a part of most teenagers’ life, which most times lead into an addiction. My article is titled, Study Finds Teenagers’ Internet Socializing Isn’t Such a Bad Thing by Tamar Lewin (676). Although it captivates its reader’s attention with the use of logos and ethos, the evidence used in it, and its appeal to the audience, the purpose of this article is not entirely effective. It lacks information (evidence and support), about the main subject, which would answer the question, “How does internet socializing benefit teenagers?” The use of egos and logos was thorough and well used in this article. For example, in the article, Ms. Ito, a research scientist in the department of informatics at the University of California, Irvine, said that some parental concern about the dangers of Internet socializing might result from a misperception (Lewin 677). This is a good example of logos, and how the author integrates the information of credible sources. The author also integrates the studies of the MacArthur Foundation, which is part of a $50 million project on digital and media learning (Lewin 677). This leads to show that Tamar Lewin put logical and legitimate sources in his article. Tamar Lewin himself seems credible in the...
