The Letter
Dear Jenny: It has been nearly a month since last time we met. How’s college life for you so far? Recently, I’ve encountered a maze. It was already late night. My room was so quiet after my roommates went to sleep. I, wide-wake, turned on my table lamp and opened the Allsen’s book “Mongol Cuisine”. The first page was about the office of ba’urchi, which translated as “cook” in the Mongolian. Staring at the strange letters that consisted the exotic, weird word-ba’urchi, I envisaged a bustle image of the cooks, wearing gowns that cut out from wolf skins, prepare food with horseflesh, mutton and cheese. I was also amazed by how they respect food, in distinctive and extreme ways, nothing like other cultures. The mutton is preserved by drying, freezing, jerking, and smoking. When they kill an animal by making an incision in the chest, they “squeezing the heart” and thereby “retaining the blood in the carcass for later use”. I definitely saw myself there also, standing right next to yurts on the grassland, watched local people making fire and rounding up the sheep or cattle, preserving food in a persistent and faithful way. But, I, strived to put myself inside the picture to understand why, still failed to get close.

Eye ache, cervical bitter, I closed the book filled with disappointment and pushed it away. Lay inside the blanket with the mild moonlight through the window and curtain, I, felt so unsure. The annoying uncertainty disturbed me like a far deeper itch I could never scratch. I witnessed the display of the nomadic culture at food and hunt. I read every detail of the various activities of people who live in Mongolian plains age after age. The vague feeling about Mongol culture sprang in my heart, but was stuck inside my chest. It is too dim to articulate. Just like the gentle moonlight, it walks through the window and splashes itself all over the quilt in front of me. But it is a light that I cannot touch. The only exist evidence of it will even disappear when I closed my eyes. Something is definitely missed. I murmured to myself. But I have no idea what is missed exactly.

As a young biologist, Wilson made a fieldwork directly across the peninsular base to collect samples of ants and other small animals. On the Hunon forest, he observed the Bird of Paradise, attracted by the marvelous display of the birds’ unique behavior and appearances alterations, enchanted with the power of natural selections throughout thousands of generations. Somehow I felt just like him, maybe in a different way. I engaged with the contexts of Mongol instead of animals on science. “The improbable spectacle” in my case, is the ways of Mongol people treat their food. In “The Bird of Paradise The Hunter and The Poet”, Wilson indicates “What humanists dislike most about science” is that “it reduces nature and is insensitive to art.” However, through pointing out science is also synthetic, which uses artlike intuition and imagery, he reveals the interconnection between science and art: “in the synthetic phase even the most elementary activity of these biological units is seen to create rich and subtle patterns.” It sudden reminded me of the time I traveled at Inner Mongolian. It was during mid July, the long summer just after I graduated from middle school. We ridded Jeep from the local towns all the way to Hölün buyir grassland, expecting to to take a look on native people’s life as tourists. Almost dehydrated under the sultry sunlight and dry air, we arrived right in front a yurt. The yurt was surprisingly beautiful, with long colored ribbons on the dome flying every time with the rare breeze under the azure sky. The host, a man of giant stature, led us into his “house”. In side the yurt, the decorum was so simple. No extra furniture. From the whole yurt itself, which is basically a huge tent extend over the field with detachable timber structures, to the exquisite embroidery carpets under my feet and the low dark-colored tables near the window, everything was moveable. It seemed like the whole family is about to pack all their stuff and leave. His wife, a woman with red sunburnt face, brought us server bowls of butter tea and traditional homemade cheese sticks. I took one sip of the turbid tea. I couldn’t help to grown while the greasy, salty taste occupied my mouth violently. It’s nothing like tea, the smooth tea mixed with milk that I used to have at lazy afternoons. And the cheese is so hard and dry. I was even hesitate to call it food. In “ The White Bird”, a little prose I read before, people are able to sees the construction steps and the carving skills when staring at those homemade wooden birds. However, those simple white handcrafts, usually hung on a thread from a beam, move with the air currents, are figurative symbols of people’s hope of stable happiness and believe of security under bleak natural context. “The art is the mirror of nature”. The aesthetic emotions derivate from how people experience on natural environment. I didn’t really access into the weird taste of these traditional Mongol foods until I had my first Global Asia lecture last week. The Professor came in with his typical amiable smile. After the students tricked in and took their seats, he said:“ Today, we’re goanna begin with a map, a moving map”. At the same time, a dynamic map flash of China through out history was showed on the projection screen. The changing territories were marked with different colors. The boundaries of the country slightly changed as time goes from dynasty to dynasty. At the time period 1271 to 1368, a yellow territory that was bigger than any one of dynasties appeared before suddenly occupied most of the screen. From North Sea to the Sea of Japan, the Mongols built a vast empire across much of Asia. The natural conditions shaped the way they lived and their spiritual life. It is the harsh living environment and scare resources in which they gained the ability to adapt and thrive in any situation and on any terrain as nomads, eared the title of “the Devil’s horsemen”. I imagined the view of Mongol people herding horses, milking cows, but failed to see the window coated in frost when temperature plummets and hear the wind begins to howl at sever winter night. I, wondering how many connections behind the map changing were left outside consideration, started to gather up the missing parts and piece up together a fuller picture of what I am looking on the Mongol Plain. The whole viewing and comprehending process demands detailed surface examination as well as traces of causations beneath the configuration. With the biological information, the original impression of the amazing mate-season dance will no longer be limited within mere appreciation; with the congruence of emotion and natural experience, people feel less mysterious and able to meet a point of affirmation in front of the wooden birds made by peasants during long winter; with knowing the causes and reasons behind the Mongol Cuisine, I realized the kitchen was only the starting point. It is already dawn now. I can actually feeling the warm temperature of the morning sunlight. I know that I will be even closer to the Mongols when I reopen the book tonight. Hope everything is well. Best wishes, Agnes

The Symbolism of the Letter in the Scarlet Letter

...Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter includes many profound and important symbols. This device of symbolism is portrayed well in the novel, especially through the scarlet letter "A". The "A" is the best example because of the changes in the meaning throughout the novel. In the beginning of the novel, the scarlet letter "A" is viewed as a symbol of sin. The middle of the novel is a transition period, where the scarlet letter "A" is viewed differently. In the commencement of the novel, the letter is taken as a label of punishment and sin. Hester Prynne bears the label of the letter upon her chest. She stands as a label of an outcast in front of society. She is wearing this symbol to burden her with punishment throughout her life. She stands on a plank where her punishment is given, "'Thus she will be a living sermon against sin, until the ignominious letter be engraved upon her tombstone'"(59). Society places its blames upon this woman. It is because of this one letter that Hester's life is changed. The letter's meaning in Puritan society banishes her from her normal life. The Puritans view this letter as a symbol of the devil. The letter also put Hester through torture: "Of an impulse and passionate nature. She had fortified herself to encounter the stings and venomous stabs of public contumely wreaking itself in every variety of insult but there was a quality so much more terrible in the...

...Writing/Business Communications/Letters Professional and Technical Writing/Business Communications/Letters Business Letters Business letters are written messages to a person or group within a professional setting. Business letters are used when the writer would like to be formal and professional. Letters may vary in length depending on the writer's objective, purpose, and message of the letter. The letter can address anyone including, but not limited to: clients and customers, managers, agencies, suppliers, and other business personnel or organizations. It is important to remember that any business letter is a legal document between the interested parties. These documents can be held for up to seven years, so it is important that all information is honest and legitimate. The Difference Between a Business letter and other letters The main thing that differentiates a business letter from other letters is that a business letter is a legal document. The writer can be held liable for anything written in the letter. For example, if it is stated that a project will be completed by a certain date in a business letter, the project legally must be completed by that date. However, if the project can't be completed by that date, another letter can be written stating that the project is behind schedule and why. For this reason, business letters must be written differently than letters used for personal use. A business letter is...

Scarlet Letter

...AnnaLeis Dibert Mrs. Eron English 2330 April 9, 2014 Each Sin Letter Humans are naturally sinful. With that being said, just because every human being knows he or she is sinful does not mean the entire human race needs to know of our sins; however, in “The Scarlet Letter” the reader learns the importance of his or her sin coming forth in ways they did not expect. The letter represents the ways our sins come forth in the world. Reverend Dimmesdale lives in constant fear of his letter being exposed for the entire world to see. Yet, Hester Prynne tries countless times to hide her letter from the world but cannot because her letter is pinned on the outside for the world to see and judge. In “The Scarlet Letter”, Hawthorne’s choice of characters and their sinful nature is a perfect example of human’s sinful nature and the ways we try to hide. Hawthorne chooses the character of Reverend Dimmesdale to represent the humans who are prideful, and “too perfect to sin”. In the religious community, the reverend is someone the citizens look up to; someone they want to follow and in their footsteps to mirror. After all, a reverend or outspoken religious leader should be someone who mirrors Christ’s image on a consistent basis. With that being said, hypocrisy plays a major role is Dimmesdale’s sins. He realizes he is being watched by the citizens and takes pride in knowing the town is looking to him for religious advice or encouragement; however, Dimmesdale’s sin could never be found...

Scarlet Letter

...The Scarlet Letter Study Guide Published in 1850, The Scarlet Letter is considered Nathaniel Hawthorne's most famous novel--and the first quintessentially American novel in style, theme, and language. Set in seventeenth-century Puritan Massachusetts, the novel centers around the travails of Hester Prynne, who gives birth to a daughter Pearl after an adulterous affair. Hawthorne's novel is concerned with the effects of the affair rather than the affair itself, using Hester's public shaming as a springboard to explore the lingering taboos of Puritan New England in contemporary society. The Scarlet Letter was an immediate success for a number of reasons. First and foremost, the United States was still a relatively new society, less than one hundred years old at the time of the novel’s publication. Indeed, still tied to Britain in its cultural formation, Hawthorne's novel offered a uniquely American style, language, set of characters, and--most importantly--a uniquely American central dilemma. Besides entertainment, then, Hawthorne's novel had the possibility of goading change, since it addressed a topic that was still relatively controversial, even taboo. Certainly Puritan values had eased somewhat by 1850, but not enough to make the novel completely welcome. It was to some degree a career-threatening decision to center his novel around an adulterous affair (but compare the plot of Fielding's Tom Jones). But Hawthorne was not concerned with a prurient affair here, though the novel’s...

Scarlet Letter

...Symbolism in The Scarlet Letter Hester Prynne’s scarlet letter is a hardworking symbol, it represents: adultery, sin, hard work, skill, charity, righteousness, sacredness, and, of course, grace. At first, there is no doubt that it symbolizes the sin of adultery, and Hester wears it as punishment. From the very beginning, she is not willing to let it dictate the terms of her punishment. “On the breast of her gown, in fine red cloth surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread, appeared the letter 'A.' It was so artistically done, and with so much fertility and gorgeous luxuriance of fancy, that it had all the effect of a last and fitting decoration to the apparel which she wore; and which was of a splendor in accordance with the taste of the age, but greatly beyond what was allowed by the sumptuary regulations of the colony” (Cain 630). By embroidering the "A" so finely, Hester takes control of her own punishment. She acknowledges her punishment and owns up to it. The letter showcases her talent and artistry, skills that allow her to make a living as a single parent in Puritan Boston. These qualities of strength and independence set her apart, as does her love of beauty, since we meet the Puritans as a crowd of "bearded men, in sad-colored garments and grey steeple-crowned hats” (Cain 626). As Hester Prynne builds a new life, her hard work and charity end up altering the letter's meaning. Some people even "refused to interpret the scarlet...

Scarlet Letter

...The Puritan “A” Essay Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter” tells the story of a woman, Hester Prynne, who conceived a child through an adulterous affair. As punishment for her sin she must wear a scarlet letter “A” on her dress. This story took place in the Puritan town of Boston; in the Puritan society “A” is a symbol of adultery or affair. Hester was forced to wear this letter as a constant reminder of her shame and so that everyone would know what she has done. The townspeople automatically began to mistreat her and her daughter so that they would leave and their society could remain pure. Although the original Puritan meaning of the letter “A” is adultery, throughout the story “A” takes on different meanings such as able and angel. Initially the Puritan society sees the “A” as a mark of punishment for sin but over time their outlook changes. In spite of all Hester endured throughout her years of being labeled as an adulterer she still remained strong. “Such helpfulness was found in her,—so much power to do, and power to sympathize,—that many people refused to interpret the scarlet A by its original signification. They said that it meant Able; so strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman’s strength” stated a member of society (13.3). She worked to redeem herself of the wrong she had done; she was a helper to those that were in need, sick, or poor. Her actions caused many members of society to change their viewpoint and no longer view her as an adulterer but as someone...

The Scarlet Letter

...The Scarlet Letter “He had been driven hither by the impulse of that Remorse which dogged him everywhere, and whose own sister and closely linked companion was that Cowardice which invariably drew him back, with her tremulous gripe, just when the other impulse had hurried him to the verge of a disclosure” (Hawthorne 134). Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale constantly battles between these two emotions throughout Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. In the story, Dimmesdale struggles to manage the sin of adultery in his life, as the evil Roger Chillingworth, husband of Hester Prynne, impresses upon him. Hester must also deal with this sin, through the exhibition of a scarlet “A” on her bosom, as she struggles to raise Pearl, the child that she conceived through her sin with Dimmesdale. Both Dimmesdale and Hester struggle to be rid of the darkness that plagues their worlds, and their inmost beings. Hawthorne skillfully develops the theme of light versus dark in The Scarlet Letter. In each of the scaffold scenes, Hawthorne uses either light or darkness, not only to expose truth, but also to conceal it. In the first scaffold scene, which takes place in the daytime, “[Hester] took the baby on her arm, and, with a burning blush, and yet a haughty smile, and a glance that would not be abashed, looked around at her townspeople and neighbours. On the breast of her gown, in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread, appeared the...

Cover Letter

...All cover letters should: Explain why you are sending a resume. Don't send a resume without a cover letter. Don't make the reader guess what you are asking for; be specific: Do you want a summer internship opportunity, or a permanent position at graduation; are you inquiring about future employment possibilities? Tell specifically how you learned about the position or the organization — a flyer posted in your department, a web site, a family friend who works at the organization. It is appropriate to mention the name of someone who suggested that you write. Convince the reader to look at your resume. The cover letter will be seen first. Therefore, it must be very well written and targeted to that employer. Call attention to elements of your background — education, leadership, experience — that are relevant to a position you are seeking. Be as specific as possible, using examples. Reflect your attitude, personality, motivation, enthusiasm, and communication skills. Provide or refer to any information specifically requested in a job advertisement that might not be covered in your resume, such as availability date, or reference to an attached writing sample. Indicate what you will do to follow-up. In a letter of application — applying for an advertised opening — applicants often say something like "I look forward to hearing from you." However, if you have further contact info (e.g. phone number) and if...
