The little Match Girl
It was terribly cold it snowed and it began to grow dark; it was also the last night of the year, New Year's Eve. In the cold and the darkness was on the street a poor little girl, with bare head and naked feet; yes she had indeed had a pair of slippers when she left home, but what could it do? They were very large slippers, her mother had last used them so big they were, and those lost little as she hurried across the street to avoid two carriages flashed at a terrible rate over; one slipper was nowhere to be found and the other ran a boy; he said he could use to cradle when he had children.

In a corner between two houses, one went a little more to the street than the other, she sat down and huddled together; little legs she pulled up under her, but she froze even more and the home she dared not go for she had sold no matches, not a penny of money her father would beat her and it was cold at home as they had only roof to cover them and the wind howled, although that was stopped up with straw and rags in the largest holes . Her little hands were almost frozen with the cold. Alas! Perhaps a burning match might be some good. If she could draw it from the bundle and strike it against the wall, and warm her fingers. She pulled one out, " Ritsch " how it sputtered as it burnt! It was a warm , bright light, like a little candle , as she held her hand over it was a wonderful light! The little girl thought she was sitting by a large iron stove, with polished brass feet and a brass fire burned so blessed, warmed as well! No, what was it! - The little stretched already went out to also warm them - then extinguished the flame, the stove vanished, - she sat with a small piece of the burnt burning match in her hand.

Short Story

...For Children * Features * ------------------------------------------------- Top of Form Bottom of Form * Login/Signup The Little Match Girl by Hans Christian Andersen Although he is well noted for his fairy-tales, the poignant story of The Little Match Girl or The Little Matchstick Girl is a great example of Hans Christian Andersen's broad literary talent and ability. I personally like to read this story at least twice a year, once in Autumn as the holiday season comes into focus, and then again around the Christmas holiday. It's a gentle reminder of the value of compassion and charity. Most terribly cold it was; it snowed, and was nearly quite dark, and evening-- the last evening of the year. In this cold and darkness there went along the street a poor little girl, bareheaded, and with naked feet. When she left home she had slippers on, it is true; but what was the good of that? They were very large slippers, which her mother had hitherto worn; so large were they; and the poor little thing lost them as she scuffled away across the street, because of two carriages that rolled by dreadfully fast. One slipper was nowhere to be found; the other had been laid hold of by an urchin, and off he ran with it; he thought it would do capitally for a cradle when he some day or other should have children himself. So the little maiden walked on with her tiny naked feet, that were quite red and blue from cold. She carried a quantity of matches in an old apron, and she...

...Short Position Paper I have chosen to write my short position paper on case #1 Divided Loyalties. I feel the doctor should tell the patients family of his findings, that the father is an excellent match based on the findings that without the transplant the daughter will die. I found when reading this particular case I was very sadden by the father and couldn’t believe that someone would be so shallow to let their own flesh and blood suffer. After researching the case and trying to find the particular moral issues besides the obvious I found that the parents and siblings all gave their consent to have the testing done to find the match. By giving implicit consent we are morally agreeing to accept something regardless of the outcome. All of the family members are aware of the test and if the results come back in her favor that one of the matches will give their own kidney. I found that the physician is put into a situation where many ethical and moral issues are jeopardized when asked to lie to the family. The relevant facts are stated in my argument. The patient is a very young girl with many years left to live and it has been made clear that without the kidney transplant she will not make it. Also she has already been through dialysis and has suffered a great deal from her condition. She has a 90% survival rate which makes the case much more relevant due to the fact that it is such a strong outcome. Not to mention the rest of the family...

Women’s Position in Stories

...events. For example, the “humpty dumpty” story was about a man who tried to commit suicide several times and succeed at the end. Also the “little red riding hood” story masked the ending of little red riding hood falling victim to a rapist. Unlike a folk tale which has cultural background, a fairy tale involves magic and fantasy. Examples of fairy tales are, “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, “Beauty and the beast”, and Disney’s “Cinderella”. Usually fairy tales include fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, giants, gnomes, and talking animals. Since folktales usually mirror the values and culture of the society from which they originated, a fairy tale can be a folk tale. In essence a fairy tale can also be a subgenre or genre of a folktale. Up until 1450 folktales were passed on orally, so not all folktales were the same. Because Folktales have been told by so many different people there were many different versions. In 1450 the printing press was invented and the folk stories were written in books. People around the world began to put more of their efforts in recording their cultural history by collecting regional folktales into books. That’s how our wonderful folktales from the 17, 18th, and 19th centuries emerged. There are three distinct folktales that reveal aspects of how a culture idealizes women. Those folktales are “The Ash Girl”, “The little glass...

Silverberg Monologue

...Silverberg You know those little towns you find that didn't show up on your map? That's here, Silverberg. The story of this town started with two people. Or at least that's where we thought it started. Mark and Abby Jackson. Twins. The usual, same eyes, same hair, same perfect little fingernails. Their parents, Alice and Sam Jackson the founders of the town, own pretty much the everything. We thought that their lives were perfect, but we all changed our minds last October when both of them suddenly went missing without a trace. No one knew anything for sure, there were rumors but none of them were really believable. Like no one believes that their crazy parents murdered them and burned their bodies in the fireplace of their mansion. Or that...

Dbq Essay On Women Analysis

...Document 9 is a video of Ellen Degeneres humorously criticizing Bic’s line of pens called “For Her.” These pens are, “designed to fit a woman’s hand.” Degeneres also says, “they’re pink so they cost twice as much,” for the same quality as a generic pen made by the same company. Essentially, women are these delicate creatures that need special writing utensils to fit their “small and frail” hands and that colors that “match” their gender. Women are being put in their own category and within that category is the requirement that they must be delicate and need special treatment through special writing utensils with “gender appropriate”...

Emma-Jane Austen Book Review

...knowledge to become a matchmaker for her new little friend, Harriet. Emma finds out that she doesn't know as much as she thinks she does; while she discovers she misread quite a few of her acquaintances. She discovers that she didn't even know herself as well as she thought. The Regency era was a time of great social, political, and even economic change. The upper class lived extravagantly and spent huge amounts on pomp and show which caused a tremendous drain of money and this lead to large scale poverty. Jane Austen's portrayal of England's class structure in 1816 presents the idea that there are three distinct social classes, the lower, middle and upper class. All three join together in harmony to create the essence of Highbury, however there is a little discrimination present. In the early part of this period the ballroom dancing was prevalent in high society parties. Jane Austen features balls in her novels quite often. CHARACTER OVERVIEW: Emma is a young, beautiful and rich girl and finds herself a bit smarter for her match-making habit. She is a feminist character and thinks that she’ll never marry. Mr.knightley is Emma’s neighbor and also her sister Isabelle’s brother-in-law. He is a very good friend and critic of Emma and found to be wise in decision making. Harriet Smith, a very good friend of Emma, is an illegitimate child whose parents are not known. Eng100 Ethics Essay

...Devika Mathur ENG100 Ryan Bloom 10 April 2013 Baby’s First Word: Designer There was once a time when the term designer was used only in terms of style and fashion. It was a choice between brands such as Gucci, Prada, or Armani and never a choice between disabilities, skin color, or gender. It is sad to say the word designer no longer applies to just materials anymore, it’s reached a new level; genetics. There is nothing ethical about being able to essentially manipulate the genes of a fetus to reflect characteristics deemed suitable by the parents. The characteristics chosen by the parents, such as a medical miracle match of genes to another sibling, set the child up to become what the parents want and not necessarily what the child wants to be. Genetic alteration of the baby also contributes to the unfairness that is gender preference and gender based discrimination. The possibility of genetic hierarchies, to which those that are not genetically enhanced are considered inferior, will increase tremendously because of the increasing gap between classes. It is understandable that technology is moving humanity towards a better more advanced future, but what shouldn’t be forgotten is that some things created in nature cannot be replaced by technology. Designer babies are just one of the few gray areas in which science infringes upon the way of nature. Scientists claim that not everything about genetically altered test tube babies can be considered bad. Science has...

...her true gender. Abigail’s frustration of whether to take the Sex Reassignment Surgery (“SRS” for short) or not was exquisitely presented in the musical, so as to communicate with the audience and encourage them to have an in-depth review about the related issue. Why Abigail hopes to be a female rather than a male? To uncover the underlying reasons, let’s start with knowing more about her life in early stage. Being born as a boy, Abigail felt that he was a girl deeply inside his mind. Liked other normal little girls, he loved playing Barbie dolls and doll’s houses. Presenting girls’ characteristics in his childhood gave him a derogatory nickname, “Girlish Boy”, which was frequently called by his classmates in primary school. Trying to conceal his female mind, Abigail always made himself looks like stronger, self-reliant through behaviors, thoughts but seems that was not successful. His classmates continued to laugh at him with offensive languages. When he grew up, he felt much more natural and comfortable to play with girls while sensed shy to play with boys. In Singapore, boys who aged 18 had to serve their duty in military. During that period, Abigail took baths in late evening after all the other soldiers took their baths. It is because Abigail felt so embarrassing to show his nude body to other boys and he felt extremely shy when she saw the boys’ ones. After years of deep consideration and struggling, Abigail finally reached his mum and dad’s agreement mentally and financially...

The Day My Heart, Life and Soul Went from Complete Happiness to Crumbled Pieces

..."The day my heart, life and soul went from complete happiness to crumbled pieces" I was just a young, little girl. I was completely devoted to soccer, cheer leading as well as my grades in school. My family meant the world to me. I often say I had a "fairy tale" childhood with everything a child could ever dream of or wish for. I had a horse named Nutmeg, which together, she and I won many blue ribbons. I had a nice car when I got my license. We were members of the New Bern Golf & Country Club. Anything I wanted, I pretty much, always received. My family attended church together every Sunday. My siblings and I sang in the Children's Choir. My mom always had my two sisters and I dressed to a T, with ruffle socks or pantyhose. Our little brother always had an outfit on to match the three of us girls. We played T-Ball for our church. We participated in the Crop Walk every year. Mom always had her little angels in sponge curl rollers after dinner, prayers, book time and bath every Saturday night. We woke up on Sunday morning and had beautiful bouncy curls. Every Sunday morning, my whole family normally ate breakfast at Bojangles. We were the "precious little Outlaw's". We knew no harm, no violence, no profanity, and no exposure to alcohol, drugs or parents arguing. We were just simply four happy children with the best life a child thought they could or would ever have or ask for. After school one day, mom picked us up from school, took us to get a snack, as we did daily...
