...Mathematical Writing by Donald E. Knuth, Tracy Larrabee, and Paul M. Roberts This report is based on a course of the same name given at Stanford University during autumn quarter, 1987. Here’s the catalog description: CS 209. Mathematical Writing—Issues of technical writing and the effective presentation of mathematics and computer science. Preparation of theses, papers, books, and “literate” computer programs. A term paper on a topic of your choice; this paper may be used for credit in another course. The first three lectures were a “minicourse” that summarized the basics. About two hundred people attended those three sessions, which were devoted primarily to a discussion of the points in §1 of this report. An exercise (§2) and a suggested solution (§3) were also part of the minicourse. The remaining 28 lectures covered these and other issues in depth. We saw many examples of “before” and “after” from manuscripts in progress. We learned how to avoid excessive subscripts and superscripts. We discussed the documentation of algorithms, computer programs, and user manuals. We considered the process of refereeing and editing. We studied how to make effective diagrams and tables, and how to find appropriate quotations to spice up a text. Some of the material duplicated some of what would be discussed in writing classes offered by the English department, but the vast majority of the lectures were devoted to issues that are specific to mathematics and/or computer science. Guest lectures by...

... March 2012 Introduction In writing this second leadership analysis I will examine the Relational Skills Audit, the Task Skills Audit, the Leadership Style Audit, Church Structure, the Leader’s/ Church’s Core Values Audit, the Ministry Circumstances Audit, and the Pastor-Organization Fit. Leadership is a challenge that must be approached with much preparation, skill, and care. If the leader takes a half hearted attitude of the deep responsibilities that come with all facets of Christian leadership, people can be wounded and Christ’s church diminished in it’s ability to reach the world. It has been said that every assignment in Christian leadership is a divine calling. If indeed this is true then we must ask ourselves the following questions: 1. What difference will I make? 2. Why am I here? 3. Who sent me? 4. Is this assignment sacred because God placed me here? 5. What does God want me to accomplish here? [1] As we work through the different audits found in Aubrey Malphurs,” Being Leaders,” we will look at the outcomes of each audit and how each one relates to myself personally. My objective will be to expound on each characteristic and how I fit or perform in the context of the information listed. James D. Whitehead wrote,” Whatever responsibilities, we are guest authorities, serving for a time, at the pleasure of our...

...Seasonality and recruiting talent The Challenges Recruitment and retention have long been identified as one of the hospitality and tourism industry's biggest challenges. This is due in part to the highly labour intensive nature of the industry, especially in contexts where customer service expectations are high (Hughes & Rog, 2008). The Icelandic tourism season is relatively short which forces companies to hire a lot of seasonal workers for a short period of time. Thus, it can be hard to get the right people, at the right time for the right job. Seasonality is a big factor in the recruiting processes and can furthermore affect the development and retention within the company. When employees foresee only a couple of month recruitment, they´ll need some motivation, encouragement and benefits to consider returning again next season. NN needs to focus on the recruitment processes and select the employees who have developing potential and express a genuine interest in working for the company for more than one season. Recruitment is being carried out on a relatively large scale on a regular basis due to the fluctuations in the business. As said before, NN is located in the Northeast corner of Iceland some 480 km away from Reykjavík. The community consists of about 3000 inhabitants and is therefore dependant upon hiring transient workers as well as local people. Therefore, the way the company attracts and retains employees is of great importance. Seasonality Seasonality...

Why or why not?” ("Mgmt690-1404b-05 strategic management,") Thirdly, “what primary factors let us to this decision?” ("Mgmt690-1404b-05 strategic management,") Fourthly, “what would we say to someone who would dispute our position?” ("Mgmt690-1404b-05 strategic management,") And lastly, “how do we plan on evaluation the global marketplace in the future?” ("Mgmt690-1404b-05 strategic management,") ("Mgmt690-1404b-05: Strategic, the Problem ") Cultural Considerations in Business Phase 4 Individual Project Considerations To be able to remain competitive in any market a company needs to use analysis tools like SWOT. ...growing rapidly (with a total of 30% over the last 10 yrs) (inspite the of the economy crisis of 2008) & anticipated to sustain this annual growth of 3% till 2015. Although being in a promising industry, it’s obvious that burger king is facing a problem as we take into consideration that it accounts for ONLY14% of total FFHR in the US. The most important issues facing Burger king are the following: 1. Failure to scan its external environment & subsequently lagging behind competition : Burger king`s 12,174 restaurants doesn`t seem to compare to the 32,466 Mcdonald`s restaurants worldwide both in number & sales volume (Mcd. Sells twice as Burger king in US & is twice as profitable. 2. Decline in value of the company share price by half, in addition to a decrease in net profit (although the total revenue only decreased slightly) 3. Failure to recognize its potential opportunities by targeting a limited segment in the market.: ( young adults who were the most affected by the 2008 economy crisis) while ignoring a broader segment like kids & families. 4.Failure in adopting a successful business strategy leading to poor SOP by eating out its own sales by concentrating too much on value meals ( which only total around 20% of sales ) while ignoring other aspects of its menu (e.g its cash cow the famous WHOPPER ) By reading between the lines we also notice other issues that have affected the company over time. 5. Inconsistent Corportate strategy resulting...

...A Case Analysis for “TheVidSoft Triangle (A)” A Case Analysis for “The Vidsoft Triangle (A)” I. Summary In what could prove to be his defining moment, Alaji Babatunde, senior technical support manager of a medium-sized & multicultural software company, is facing a crucible in the form of an interpersonal conflict in one of his teams which necessitates his quick but calculated decision that would impact the employees‟ harmonious & effective interaction in his department and that could question the integrity of a procedurally correct business decision he made. Discerning the conflict‟s apparent origins & consequences and considering probable answers will lead Alaji to an evenhanded resolution to this intense trial and secure against a potential repeat. II. Analysis When VidSoft Technologies, an internet company, opened in 1996 it was developing enterprise software focusing on procurement for its customers. Both its revenues and employee base increased after going public in 1999. The rapid growth of the company could be mainly attributed to the customer-centric corporate strategy and team-oriented work culture that was introduced and implemented by the organization‟s mild-mannered and charismatic CEO, Keith Nash. Teams are highly treasured in the company. They satisfy most employees‟ need for affiliation as McClelland‟s theory of needs explains (Robbins & Judge, 2009:180). Teams in the company can be classified as self-managed as they „can not only solve problems but implement...

Macro-Finance Models of Interest Rates and the Economy Glenn D. Rudebusch∗ Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco Abstract During the past decade, much new research has combined elements of finance, monetary economics, and macroeconomics in order to study the relationship between the term structure of interest rates and the economy. In this survey, I describe three different strands of such interdisciplinary macro-finance term structure research. The first adds macroeconomic variables and structure to a canonical arbitrage-free finance representation of the yield curve. The second examines bond pricing and bond risk premiums in a canonical macroeconomic dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model. The third develops a new class of arbitrage-free term structure models that are empirically tractable and well suited to macro-finance investigations. This article is based on a keynote lecture to the 41st annual conference of the Money, Macro, and Finance Research Group...
