...Running head: POLICE OFFICER II: ON THE JOB POLICE OFFICERS II: ON THE JOB Sigfredo A. Collazo Excelsior College Abstract Police officers are people the society should always be seen as the epitomes of discipline and guardian of law and order; however police behavior in recent years has been nothing but exemplary thus rising to extreme bitterness and disbelieve in the community. The community no longer trusts or respects police officers levying all sorts of charges against them. Police officers behavior is indeed despicable in some cases, especially where minorities or women are concerned. Police subculture is responsible for providing officers a different working attitude and mindset. Their character and personality are profoundly altered by the views and values that they learn from existing in this subculture. The one most important thing about this subculture is the idea of insiders and outsiders that lie at the center of all its values. Police officers are continuously reminded of their part as protectors of good order and discipline which turns them into the community as they view everyone outside the police department as a potential criminal or suspect. Police culture is also primarily characterized by violence. Many officers are exposed to a subculture of violence in which they encounter death almost daily. The police are influenced by a flawed subculture that profoundly affects the attitude and performance of most police officers. On one hand, this...

...others on what to do; they need to be able to talk to each other throughout the job, the Army communicate through various ways such as hand signals, radio etc... If the Army did not communicate within the job they would not perform the job well; no one would know exactly what they were doing therefore the job would more than likely become very confusing. For example, if there was a conflict that begun and not one of the work colleagues communicated no one would know what job/position they are meant to be taking, therefore the job would become a shamble and would not be completed correctly, this is why communication is very important in the Army. In the Police communication is also vital as they need to know what is expected from them, if Police did not communicate then crimes that were committed would not be solved, therefore it would make the Police force looked very unsuccessful. For example, if Police received a phone call from a distressed person because their house had been burgled and police officers did not radio through, then the crime would not be solved, this is why communication is very important in the Police force. Communication has good and bad points, some good points are: Being able to communicate over a large distance, this is vital in the Army and Police as both forces work in a very large distance of one another. Body language, if there was an argument taking place and the police turned up all aggressive towards the people involved, then the people will not...

...11, 2012 Kimberly Gonzales Critical Issues Paper The job of a police officer can be a very dangerous and demanding job at times, but having new advances in technology can help make the job a little easier and safer for officers on duty. Some types of technology that law enforcement agencies use today are facial recognition software, fingerprint identification systems, global positioning systems, closed-circuit television, and cross. Facial recognition software is a database of criminal mug shots that is used throughout all police agencies to positively identify a criminal. Having this technology makes positively identifying a criminal faster and more reliable. The fingerprint identification system is very similar to facial recognition software but instead of faces, it uses fingerprints to identify criminals when they are brought in to police custody. Global positioning systems or (GPS) for short is a satellite-based technology that is used by law enforcement agencies to track the movement of patrol or specially equipped stolen vehicles like for example, bait cars. GPS can also be used to track criminals that have been released from incarceration and placed on house arrest. Before they are released from incarceration these criminals are fitted for some sort of tracking device, that is usually placed on the ankle of the individual, to make sure that they do not leave their homes without a good cause; such as a job, grocery shopping, or attending a rehabilitation program to...

...The Job of Police Officers A police officer’s duty is to maintain public order, preventing, and detecting crime. The concept of police officers, also known as cops, and law enforcement has been around ever since the since ancient time had a theory that an organization of “peacekeepers” would reduce the crime and violence being committed. This theory stuck with society and is still around today. People of law enforcement have a mission when they step into their police car, that mission is to enforce the rules of conduct or law. Of course, accomplishing this mission can be dangerous. Often when a cop leaves his or her house to go to work worries start to set it, such as “will I be coming back home when my day is over” or “will a simple traffic stop go sour and someone ends up dead?” These thoughts are a part of the stress that comes with the job and most people are trained to deal with this stress. Speaking of training, there are classes that a high school student can take to prepare for a career in law enforcement. Psychology, sociology, foreign languages, and computer courses are recommended for those students who plan to take criminal justice as their higher education major. Participating in sports can improve your chances on becoming an officer of law because it improves strength and endurance. Other student activities can be helpful in this career because they help to improve leadership skills and other publications. Every law enforcement agency has different requirements...

As an administrator overseeing the police department would be indeed the hardest of the three. Within a police department the chief of police would be the top administrator and in command of administrating the departments policies to officers, detectives, and supporting staff. This paper will discuss the roles of a chief of police and the negative and positive aspects he or she may endure. As an administrator of a police department, the requirements are more than just ensuring the officers follow the policies of that department. It requires the individual to be knowledgeable of federal and state laws, budgets, and public relations and must be able to communicate in a competent fashion in a written and oral manner and be a critical thinker. Other challenges a chief of police can face are ensuring the officers are well trained and have the proper equipment to do his or her job while out on patrol. A chief of police must be an ethical individual and an unbiased individual. Not fulfilling these requirements could result in a crisis situation within the department. The police department is not the only place a crisis can occur when the chief of police is not fulfilling his or her job as described in the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The public tends to demand the chief of police to...

...policing, one in which how they are treated within the work environment. Other things do come into play when trying to increase females in policing such as expanding on the diversity being accepted in police agencies. Many females think they are treated unfairly and unjust according to the system, it seems to always come back to the fact that women feel like they are being mistreated which needs to be changed. Females should not feel inferior to males within the workplace even if they are feeling belittled by other male officers. One way females can “vent” about what is being said or done to them, is mentoring within the workplace; this will help them with stress, and getting more comfortable with the job by being able to talk to someone about it. There are many positive affects that females have in law enforcement, and knowing that there should be a population growth with females in policing. Police departments are more diverse today than ever before. Females in policing are known to have a positive impact within all law enforcement, policing being most common. Many things come into play when females are within law enforcement, some being good, and some bad. Females do come across problems within the workplace, but so do males; this factor not setting them apart from males on the job. Females make a huge impact on policing in many ways, in which are positive to law enforcement. Although there are not nearly as many female officers to male officers, females still have a major influence...
