Condensation slides its way down the window, leaving behind it a ribbon of smooth, murky darkness. The sheer suffocating heat and humidity inside suggests the number of drenched bodies seeking refuge from the relentless onslaught of rain. In one corner, a single teacher loses the battle to restrain a group of shouting children and is swamped in a wave of uniformed bodies. Buzzing with anticipation, their instincts triggered by the promise of food, the mass of children charges past him into the canteen. Dragging back some small measure of control, he finally manages to stem the flow and continues to thin out the crowd at a steadier pace with many jealous glances towards the table where several of his fellow teachers lounge, indulging in a few sweet, children-free minutes. As the room fills, the shouts, yells and vague discussion coming from the hoard of tatty teenagers rise to a pitch and volume that could shame a football crowd. Wanting to live up to their reputation, the children continue their barrage of sound, undeterred by the half—hearted efforts of their teachers. Finally, however, as the initial rush of eager bodies reduces, the disruption falls to a minimum and the children split off into groups. At the centre of one such gathering sits a rather plain girl putting up with the unwanted attention of several of her social superiors. She is clearly used to this type of bullying, and she continues her meal in silence. Finally bored with watching their comments bounce off the girl without effect, the group turn their attention to a table surrounded by an invisible force field apparently coming from its dozen or so occupants. This group seems to reject any lesser being that attempts to come within three feet of their sacred ground. This creates a ring of admirers who look up to the mixture of reputation and charisma within. Those teenagers within this bubble of admiration seem to have no intention of letting any others into the group. Enough gold and fake diamonds to replicate the entire crown jewels covers the same uniforms that seem to repel any similar attempt by any other pupil. One particular girl, smiling with all the dazzling intensity of a chat show host, is obviously a new addition to the group. Ecstatic at her place in this most sacred of circles, she looks down from the Mount Olympus of the dinner hall at the insignificant drones beneath her, attempting to display some of the haughty dignity of the established members of the gang. As the initial lure of the dinner hall lessens, several of the hardier students decide to brave the weather outside and leave the overcrowded, damp stuffiness to those willing to endure it for its relative comfort and the knowledge that hours spent on hair will not have been in vain. Suddenly a loud crash echoes around the hall bringing most of the children out of their relaxed stupor. For once the whole student body is united in hilarity, all eagerly scanning the three-hundred or more people for the guilty party. The culprit (a minute, year seven boy) stands next to the offending pile of broken china and, as several of the older students begin to whoop, proceeds to flush a deep red as he prays for an escape from the blinding spotlight. Unfortunately, the hole in the ground fails to appear for him as it has failed so many others in similar situations and he is left at the mercy of hundreds of delighted teenagers. Finally, the yells subside, quelled by steely glances from several of the teachers, and they are replaced by the ominous tinny chime of the bell, forcing all the children out into the merciless rain.

Once Upon a Town

...Analytical Essay of “Once Upon a Town” by Bob Greene While the world was at war, and families were being separated from their loved ones, a tradition began on Christmas day in 1941 in North Platte Nebraska. “The Canteen” as it was called; actually a small railway station stop in North Platte changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people for the better, both visitors and volunteers. The Canteen became legendary and the small city of North Platte. It, along with many cities surrounding made history around the world because of their commitment to and sacrifices for the soldiers that stopped albeit briefly at the “Canteen”. The Canteen in North Platte was born by accident, but clearly addressed a real need both emotional and physical for the local citizens and the soldiers that stopped there on their way across country during a very difficult time. When a group of local families from North Platte were told the train arriving on Christmas Day in 1941 was to have the local boys of North Platte on the train they prepared to meet their families with food, and drinks. Items made by hand and with love for their loved ones. What they found when the train arrived were soldiers that in fact were not their loved ones. Although they were disappointed with the fact that the young men that arrived were not their family, they saw the young soldiers were so happy to be met by them. So much gratitude from the soldiers that stopped that day, and true appreciation for the kindness...

Obesity

...obesity that currently exists within Australia. Obesity is identified as one of the Australia’s National Health Priority areas. Globally obesity ranks as the fifth leading cause of mortality. Obesity is also a major contributor to the burden of diabetes at 44%, ischaemic heart disease at 23% and around 7 to 41% for certain cancers.1 In this essay I will be focusing on childhood obesity, where it is estimated that in 2010, 43 million children under the age of 5 years will be categorised as being overweight or obese.1 Queensland unfortunately has the highest rate of obesity within Australia at around 18.5% of the population. Of which 19 to 24% of Australian school age children are overweight or obese.2 Whilst researching this issue I came across Bowen Athletics Club who investigated the influence of improving food choices in their canteen had on their members. Many of their strategies incorporated initiatives that had been tabled within the Eat Well Queensland project, which looked at Social Determinants of health, productivity and cooperation from local and state governments and non-government agencies. I will then conclude that based on evidenced sourced that the actions and strategies that the Bowen Athletics Club used seemed sufficient enough in changing attitudes and behaviours of it’s members. Obesity is caused by an increase in body fat by inappropriate eating habits or a decrease in energy output and can also be a combination of both of these factors.3,4 Some aspects that...

...such as PESTLE, Porter’s Five Forces and Cash Flow, based on those researches, it seems that this business could success and have much developing space to improve itself in the future, for example, adding more recreational facilities in ‘Our Kitchen ’ to attract more customers. 2 Introduction The reason why I choose China as the target market is that I come from China and I am more familiar with the Chinese market than the United Kingdom’s, especially Chinese colleges and students. When I arrived at my new dormitory in the University of Birmingham, I was shocked by the big and bright kitchen for 15 students. There is no public kitchen in Chinese colleges, so almost all the students must have three meals in one or several crowded canteens or order takeout every day. As a new graduate from a Chinese college, I could realize that some students are eager to cook for themselves or host a party with their friends. What they calling for is a comparatively private and comfortable environment. At the same time, I know economic environment around Chinese colleges well. Thus I come up with an idea that launching a public kitchen for college students and it could be a brand new food service in the market of Chinese colleges. Moreover, if the idea were to come true, I could get sense of accomplishment when I am doing something more to improve the quality of life of Chinese college students. My business idea which will be explained later in details is setting up a company named...

She has two teenage children who do many different clubs in the evenings and she is the taxi. She herself is sporty and enjoys fitness classes twice a week”. Working in the school canteen would increase her stress levels due to having to make sure all the food is cooked properly and in time for all the children at lunchtime. She may always be feared about children being ill after they have eaten the dinner which could lead to stress. Due to the stress levels this is what could have triggered the IBS.
