The story starts out by introducing two main characters: racoons Bingo and J’miah. The first scene included Daddy-O and Little Mama (Bingo and J’miah’s parents) leaving their kids on their own to be Information Officers, a specialized branch of the Official Scouts. The Official Scouts (only racoons) watched over the Sugar Man Swamp. The Scouts were actually started by the Sugar Man himself. The Sugar Man is a being (like the Sasquatch) that inhabits Sugar Man Swamp, which is named after him. It also introduces Chap Brayburn and his mother, who live near the swamp and harvest its sugar cane to make their sugar pies (source of income) *picture= Daddy-O and Little Mama walking away from Bingo & J’miah

In this story, there are two forces that are both trying to destroy the Sugar Man Swamp: the Farrow Gang and Sonny Boy Beaucoup. The Farrow Gang is a group of wild hogs, consisting of Buzzie, Clydine, and their litter, who are planning eat all the sugar cane crucial to the Brayburns’ sugar pies. Sonny Boy Beaucoup currently owns the swamp and …show more content…
The problem is, the last time anyone’s ever seen the Sugar Man was 1949, and no one knows where he resides. All Bingo and J’miah have to go on is the fact that the Sugar Man lives in the deepest, darkest, quietest part of the swamp. When they find Gertrude (rattlesnake), the Sugar Man’s companion, she explains that the only ways that they could wake him up is by using a rattlesnake’s bite, or the smell of sugarcane. The problem is, Gertrude’s run out of it, and biting the Sugar Man awake causes him to be angry, which could prove disastrous to everyone. To get sugarcane, you needed to go to the sugar cane patch that the Brayburns use for their sugar pies, but the sugar cane patch is guarded by cane

Media coverage emphasizes that "straights can get it too" through promiscuity and a "fast lane" lifestyle.
