...This approach is used if and when a clinician is not secure enough in their ability in this particular area of their job. The clinician may only have to or need to go over example cases or they may require a mentor to help by giving them a broader view on this particular situation. Mentors are good in providing coaching and monitoring a clinician while also giving the clinician poise and assurance that is necessary to help the client. Refer is the next approach. The clinician may need to be referred for personal therapy by the human service manager. Personal therapy can and will help the clinician help the client throughout the clinician’s career in this field. The last approach is release and is considered to be the hardest. Release is when the human service manager has no choice but to let the clinician go. This could be a result of abuse of company policy, illegal activities, lack of improvement or after all other approaches have been executed. Scenario One: Tom Martin Tom Martin has been an employee of the agency for four years. Tom is an individual counselor for adult clients. During his four year employment with this agency, he has demonstrated mediocre counseling record. There have been a few questionable cancellations from four...

...James has no contact with his father, raising concerns around paternal attachment and possible negative lifeevents/experiences due to separation. The assessment will need to explore howJames and his family view this separation; again each may hold conflictingviews and this must be sensitively addressed. One must consider that the immediate familyunit, the extended family and professionals may all have differing perceptionsof families with same-sex caregivers; some view this as strength whereas otherswill see membership of a minority group as a risk. Family members themselvesmay negatively discriminate on the basis of sexuality. Prior awareness of thepossibility of conflicting opinions will enable the worker to reactthoughtfully and mediate effectively. The social worker should criticallyevaluate their own practice continuously, checking for assumptions, stereotyping and cultural bias. Preparation for the assessment should beginwith ensuring an appropriate social worker is allocated. The team managershould consider the field workers knowledge and understanding of the issuespertaining to this particular family (for example youth offending,discrimination/oppression based on sexuality/gender, attachment issues etc), aswell as ensuring the worker is an appropriate match in terms of race and gender. Once a suitable worker is allocated thecase, he/she will need to refer to all information gathered previously. Thiswill prevent the family repeating sensitive information again, and...

...Sociology Midterm - Video Analysis 1. Summary: The film I chose for this analysis is The Long Walk Home, directed by Richard Pearce. This film is about Odessa, an African-American maid in the Thompson family’s household in Montgomery, Alabama in the 1950s. On December 1, 1955 Rosa Parks ‘refused to obey bus driver James F. Blake’s order to give up her seat in the colored section to a white passenger, after the white section was filled.’ Ms. Parks was arrested and there followed the Montgomery Bus Boycott when the entire African-American population refused to ride any of the city buses. Odessa supports the bus boycott and starts walking to work. Miriam Thompson finds herself in the midst of the civil rights revolution when she helps Odessa by picking her up and driving her to work at her home two days per week. When Mr. Thompson stays home sick one day, he finds out about Miriam driving Odessa to work and makes Miriam call Odessa to tell her she will not be picking her up. While Miriam complies the first day, that evening she tells Mr. Thompson she will be running the household as she see fit which includes picking up Odessa. The following day, in addition to picking Odessa up, Miriam signs up to become a driver in the organized carpool system during the boycott. The movie comes to an end with a group of white men mobbing the carpool lot. Although frightened, Odessa, Miriam and the other African-American women there stand up to the men in a peaceful protest by holding...

...SAmbrose Saint Blessing and Official Opening of the New Building 8 October 2012 HEAD MASTER’S WELCOME "And if you have faith, everything you ask for in prayer you will receive." - Matthew 21:22 In June of 2006, after six fruitless years of campaigning for new buildings, Saint Ambrose College was selected to become a ‘One School Pathfinder’. This was to be an opportunity for the Local Authority and the College to set up and test a joint approach to educational transformation. The journey took longer than intended, six years instead of the allocated three; the Lord clearly wanted us to spend more time in the design and planning! The Celtic cross was chosen by Blessed Edmund Rice, our founder, to become a symbol of the Congregation of Christian Brothers. It is the cross which appears on the badges of all our schools and colleges. Now it carves out that shape in the Manchester landscape proclaiming our Faith to all. The interior of the building emphasises the religious community which is at the heart of our College. The learning wings provide enhanced teaching and sporting facilities and embrace the IT age like never before. We must always remember that this is not a new College, it is a new building. The College continues to be an amalgam of past and present students and staff whose shared commitment to Edmund Rice Education has made it unique. Edmund would be proud of what we have built but even prouder of how it will transform the lives and learning...

...duties were assigned as per the rules and regulation prevailed during that period in a particular society. The society grew and grew and became a nation and eventually the state. Thomas Hobbes very rightly said that in a "state of nature" human life would be "lonely, deprived, spiteful, violent, and petite". In the absence of law and order, everyone is powerful and everyone has the right to do anything - negative or positive. To keep the people away from this unlimited freedom and unlimited rights people established community and set up rules and regulation for living in a society. In this way they gained security against the absolute powers of the people and of the rulers/monarch or king (Social Contract, 2013). So life protection was the basic need. Abortion is also a life protection and is condemned on the same basis that a fetus should be allowed to grow and be given a chance to join this world. Killing a fetus is actually a murder, according to some school of thoughts. The author of the "Defense of Abortion" Mr. Thompson (1971) seems to be a representative of the females and has supported not the life but the women’s life. He furthered his arguments by giving an example of the violinist to be plugged in with some other person to save his life. The person plugged in should have been given a choice of living well within his own accord. He considered it a cruelty not to give a chance to the person plugged in. For sure, the violinist was dying and the person plugged in would...

In Honduras, the former president, Manuel Zelaya, was overthrown in a coup, in 2009, which brought up the new president, Roberto Micheletti. Micheletti created a new de facto government which had various effects on the citizens of Honduras, including censorship. Censorship caused by the de facto government led by Micheletti caused the killing of journalists, the raiding of media outlets, and the misinformation of citizens. These issues affect the economic and financial security of the country as well as the ability to immigrate...

...Andy Cheung, McDonald's Franchisee, Forced Out After Allegations Of Worker Exploitation The Huffington Post | By Bonnie Kavoussi Posted: 03/14/2013 6:52 pm EDT A franchisee who owns three McDonald's restaurants in Harrisburg, Pa., has left the company after allegations of worker exploitation. Foreign guest workers -- students from Asia and Latin America -- employed by the franchisee, Andy Cheung, allege that he forced them to work shifts of up to 25 hours and pay steep rent for living in his and his son's crowded basements, according to The Nation. The workers also allege that Cheung did not pay them for all of the hours they worked and that he retaliated against them for going on strike by locking them out of their living quarters. The guest workers paid as much as $3,000 apiece to come to the U.S. on temporary visas as part of a State Department exchange program, according to the National Guestworker Alliance, which is representing the workers. The group says Cheung deducted rent from the workers' paychecks, pushing their pay below the minimum wage. "We were living 6 men in a basement, on bunk beds that were clearly made [for] children and one tiny bathroom," Jorge Rios, an Argentinian college student who started working for Cheung in December, told CNNMoney. The workers have filed complaints with both the Labor Department and the State Department. Danya Proud, a McDonald's spokeswoman, told The Huffington Post in a Thursday statement that the company has taken...

...Children and Advertising Advertising is used by organizations as a marketing tool to create brand awareness, persuade consumers, and motivate them to buy. For organizations, consumers play a huge role in helping a firm determine the creation and implementation of an advertising campaign. In an article in Advertising Society and Review the author notes that, “American children view an estimated 40,000 commercials annually” (O'Barr, 2008). Thus, children have the potential to actively participate in family buying decisions. In order to successfully design an advertising campaign towards children, organizations must understand children’s role as consumers, the effect they have on the advertising industry, and how advertising to children helps businesses achieve their objectives. For advertising to children to be advantageous, advertisers must recognize a child’s buying behavior and purchasing power. Advertising to children is defined as using various advertising mediums to promote toys, food, music, films, and clothing to young consumers. Marketers refer to these young consumers as Generation Y. This generation that makes up approximately 28.6% of the population includes toddlers, tweens and teens. Generation Y makes up three distinct markets that include: 1) the primary market 2) the influence market – parental yielding and 3) the future market (McNeal, 1998). Within the primary market, advertisers must see children as an audience that has the capability to purchase...

...and not much more. I kept waiting for “it” to happen but no monumental or memorable event really ever occurred. The film begins with Charles Foster Kane on his deathbed as he whispers his last word “rosebud”, before dropping his globe and it shattering everywhere. The rest of the film is essentially a chase by a reporter named Jerry Thompson as he tries to find out what Kane meant by “rosebud”. Through a series of interviews that Thompson conducts, we get an in-depth look at Thompson’s life through flashbacks in the perspective of many people who knew him and were close to him. The setup of the movie was something I did enjoy. The film began at the end of Kane’s life and then progresses through flashbacks. I always find it interesting when movies are set up that way because traditionally a film has a conclusion at the end of a film while Citizen Kane showed us Kane’s fate right away. This film was one of the first to implement a storyline in this manner. Kane’s story unfolds in overlapping segments by different narrators who add information to Kane’s life. Another interesting aspect of the film is that every narrator may have a biased or slewed view or judgment of Kane for a variety of reasons and...

...Professional Studies Assignment Introduction For this essay I will be reflecting on an incident from practice, by drawing on developing knowledge, understanding and the application of professional studies. Reflection offers an opportunity to learn through an experience. This allows us to develop or sustain effective practice (Johns, 2000). I will be using the Gibbs (1988) reflective framework to structure my reflection (see appendix A). I find this framework very easy to follow, and as Clodagn (2003), explains it allows a person to implement alternative actions to an event, if followed. The incident will be described and the influence of key issues relating to ethical theories and decision-making, illness journeys and lay and professional perspectives will be explored. Principles of nursing models will be looked at and their contribution to individual patient care. I will also look at resource management, quality assurance and the role of evidence-based practice. For the purpose of this essay, to maintain confidentiality, the patient will be referred to as Mr Charlie Wood, (NMC code of professional conduct 2002; 5.1). Incident The incident occurred when I was a student on a medical ward. Mr. Wood, age 80 had been admitted to hospital following a stroke. From this he had lost the ability to mobilise and speak effectively. He was a very dependent gentleman and counted on the nurses to undertake all aspects of his care. His wife, whose name has also...

...about the communities and the environment; creating ongoing win-win partnerships with suppliers; and promoting the health of their stakeholders through healthy eating education.(Thompson, Peteraf, Gamble, & Strickland. (2012)) WFM has developed strategies to fulfill each of the seven core values which make of their mission. Highest Quality Goods WFM’s product strategy is to provide customers with the highest quality natural and organic products available in the market. In order to achieve this goal they work with the suppliers and personally inspect the quality of each product before it placed in their stores. They also work with local and regional suppliers to ensure that their customers receive the freshest most seasonal products (Thompson et al., 2010). They will own purchase products from those suppliers who are dedicated to sustainable agriculture which are environmentally sound.( Thompson et al., 2010) Satisfying and Delighting Customers The pricing strategy is to provide the best prices for the highest quality natural and organic products. WFM is able to this by purchasing most of their product from regional and national suppliers. WFM has purchasing power with these suppliers and in turn is able to take advantage of opportunity buys offered by the suppliers and volume discounts.(Thompson et al., 2010) This allows WFM to offer their consumers lower prices on various products. WFM also offer store brands and value programs which...

...McDonald’s and Leadership. McDonald’s is a well-known company that many people have frequented at least once in their lifetime. McDonald’s, like many other companies, started with a dream and a vision. Back in the 30’s when the McDonald brothers started selling hot dogs; little did they know that they would have a profound effect on what would become the fast food industry and American culture (How McDonald's Works, 2012). In 1948, the McDonald brothers reinvented their business, their products and their processes and it paid off. They expanded their business and became a franchise, and it was during this expansion that they would encounter the man who in 1961 bought the whole business, and who takes credit for the McDonald’s corporation, Ray Kroc (How McDonald's Works, 2012). It has been Kroc’s determination, vision and goal to advance McDonald’s into the fast food giant that it is today. As one can see, McDonald’s is an ever changing and evolving organization. This research paper highlights four areas of McDonald’s management; planning, organizing, leadership and control. Planning: McDonald’s Corporation has a “Customer-Focused Plan to Win” plan (Strategic Direction, Company Profile). The plan is more of a guide for operating that is adaptable to change. It involves Five Elements (the 5 P’s): People, Products, Place, Price, and Promotion; along with being financially responsible. They continue to train all employees at all levels to keep them updated on...

...nation and is occasionally revisited in junior high and high school, and then again if the person makes it to college. What typically is not taught or touched on, though, is the mental and emotional struggle the slaves endured. Because slavery is no longer prominent and that generation has passed, it is very difficult to dig deeper into what actually occurred during the time period in order to reach a level of empathy that perceives slavery as something more than just a historical fact. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass serves as a fundamental primary source that pulls the reader into the everyday life of a slave and allows them to go beyond history to focus on the human foreground of the narrative. Douglass’ first person point of view is what makes the narrative so valuable and effective. The reader is able to witness exactly what Douglass endured during his time in captivity and during his time of freedom, which is necessary when studying this time period. History books and scholars tend to bypass mentioning the severe psychological suffering slaves were exposed to, simply wanting to focus on the monotonous details and facts that are...
