...“Whose house is this?” The first four words of Toni Morrison’s new book greet — or assail — us before the story even begins. They’re from the epigraph, which quotes a song cycle written by the author some 20 years ago and therefore, it seems safe to say, not originally intended for this book, but an indication, perhaps, of how long its themes have been haunting her. And “haunting” is a fitting word for the lyric itself, in which a speaker professes to lack both recognition of and accountability for the strange, shadowy, dissembling domicile in which he finds himself. The atmosphere of alienation makes the song’s final line even more uncanny: “Say, tell me, why does its lock fit my key?” Thus the stage is set for “Home”: on the basis of its publisher’s description a novel, on the basis of its length a novella, and on the basis of its stripped-down, symbol-laden plot something of an allegory. It tells the story of Frank Money, a 24-year-old Korean War veteran, as he embarks on a reluctant journey home. But where — and what — is home? Frank is already back from the fighting when we meet him, a year after being discharged from an integrated Army into a segregated homeland. Since then, he has wandered the streets of Seattle, “not totally homeless, but close.” He has gambled his Army pay and lost it, worked odd jobs and lost them, lived with a girlfriend and lost her, and all the while struggled, none too successfully, against the prospect of losing his mind. The action begins with...

...Even just a quick read of this book tells you about Hammett's faithful (Bible-related) analysis of something written to argue for Baptist ecclesiology. His valid and heavy (Bible-related) analysis of something written is central to his work as a whole, which makes it not only worthy of something to think about for all Christians, but also is good evidence of Hammett's intelligent wholeness or completeness. His arguments are all (Bible-related) based. Hammett views this as necessary and built-in to the Baptist faith: "Since Baptists are people of the Book, a Baptist approach to the nature of the church begins with Holy written work" (26). This is seen in the very first chapter. In his explanation of the Greek word εκκλησια, Hammett argues for...

...Summary of the Books of the New Testament Books The Gospel of Mark The Gospel of Mark is the second book in the Gospels and is easily considered a Gospel. It was written by Mark, cousin of Barnabas and companion of Peter the apostle. This Gospel covers the events that took place and the run-ins that people had with the resurrected Jesus. Mark deals more with the miracles Christ performed than the other gospels. It starts with John the Baptist and Jesus’ baptism then goes on speaking of the moment when Satan had to test Jesus and he sent him away into the wilderness for forty days then comes out triumphant. The final section of the book completes with the empty tomb. It focuses a lot on the last week of Christ’s life in Jerusalem. The recipients of this Gospel that Mark aimed for was the suffering church and it was written around 60 or 70 ad and is the earliest of the canonical gospels. Acts The next book in the New Testament is Acts and it has a narrative history to it and includes several sermons. There are many key characters in the book of Acts such as Peter, Paul, John, James, Stephan, Barnabus, Timothy, Lidia, Silas, and Apollos. This is the conclusion to the Gospel of Luke and was also written by Luke because he wanted to tell the story of how the believers were empowered by the Holy Spirit and worked to spread the Gospel of Christ. It tells of how the Holy Spirit empowered the apostles to take Christ’s message forward to the ends of the...

...2 Esdras Summary: The book of 2 Edras starts with Ezra receiving a prophetic call from God. He explains that God is upset with Israel because as time goes on, they keep on sinning. He continues and says that they are going to be driven out of their land and that there will be a people coming from the East (1:38). His prophecy ends with God saying that he will judge Israel and protect the church that is to come. Then there is a cut and we jump into Ezra’s discussions with the angel Uriel, and he his three visions. Ezra talks about two main things, the first being his struggle with sin and how God is disappointed with Israel. The next big topic is Ezra’s visions about things to come and the end times. Ezra struggles to grasp God’s decisions and actions and Uriel makes it clear that man cannot comprehend God’s actions. The last two chapters of the book talk about God’s judgment on people and cities that oppose him, such as Babylon. From here, the writer encourages believers to stay strong for there is much persecution to come. Date and Evaluation: Many scholars believe that 2 Esdras wasn’t written by Ezra or during the time he was alive, but rather the book was written by Christians in the first and second century A.D. After reading through this book I understand that the author has many questions about why things are what they are. We read over and over again that “Ezra” is disturbed by questions about God’s chosen people and sin. More than this, I see that Ezra really respects...

...example, Ezekiel stood as a watchman on the walls of Zion ready to trumpet a warning against religious apostasy. He warned the people against political and military alliances with foreign powers, the temptation to become involved in idolatry and Canaanite cultural worship and the danger of placing excessive confidence in religious formalism and sacrificial ritual. While the prophets functioned in various ways as they communicated God’s message, they occupied one major role in Israel’s religious system; which was the role of a royal diplomat or prosecuting attorney indicting the nation for violations of the Mosaic Covenant. The Major Prophets In listing there are Five Major Prophets that stands out: Isaiah Isaiah is called the book of salvation. The name means “the salvation of the Lord” or “the Lord is salvation”. There is no other book in history that covers the same amount of time or the comprehensive aggregation of people and cultures as found in the pages of the Bible. The mysteries and wisdom of the Bible have held the attention of Biblical and non-biblical scholars for centuries. We know from the study of history that not all Jews agreed on which books belonged in the Bible. As a matter of fact Christians also debated what to include and exclude in the New Testament Scriptures. This was a major problem in the first two centuries of Christianity. Biblical historian Paul Johnson wrote in his book entitled History of Christianity, “After more than two centuries since the...

...Numbers The book of Numbers is a narrative that explains how the fledging nation journeyed from Sinai to the Trans-Jordan. The book of Numbers was written by Moses between 1450 and 1410 B.C. The narrative begins at Mount Sinai. This includes, Kadesh, Mount Hor, the plains of Moab, the Sinai desert, and it completes at the boundaries of Canaan. Numbers is a census that helped as an organizing structure. These numbers were the numbers that showed how many men were able to go to war. It also served to help provide insight on how to divide the land. These numbers where used to help impress the ordinance. Another purpose for the census was to be able to show gods ability to sustain the whole population of people who were wandering around the desert for forty years. Then the second census showed how god was able to maintain the strength of the nation. The story of numbers was meant to show gods faithfulness. Joshua The book of Joshua is a book of laws that are to help guide the people in the gods path, it is stated within the book “Do not let this book of the Law depart from your mouth; mediate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.” Within the first chapter of the book of Joshua, it shows changes that occurred to the people, such as the inexperienced nation of Israel, which was the first time departing from Egypt the people had been without Moses. ...1 (a) Explain the arguments surrounding the dating of Luke’s Gospel. There has been arguments predicting the date of Luke's gospel and the possible dates are the AD60’s, AD80’s (middle late first century), AD180’s (late second century). The argument for the dating to be the AD60’s is that the book of acts had to have been written before AD62 as the book suddenly ends with the imprisonment of the apostle Paul. The book of acts ended with Paul’s imprisonment which was unexpected as it did not include any of the other important events that happened after the imprisonment took place for example: James martyrdom the brother of Jesus and the leader of Jerusalem which happened in AD62, also Paul’s martyrdom and the persecution of emperor Nero etc. Another example of evidence that Luke’s gospel was written before AD62 is that there is no mention of the fall of Jerusalem in the book of acts which happened in the AD70’s this was quite a big event that took place and was still not mentioned. The book of acts only seems to focus on the events that were relevant before the fall of Jerusalem. If the book of acts was written before AD62 then the gospel of Luke was written a short time before this. Luke’s purpose was to present the progression of the gospel from Jerusalem and Rome. Another possible date that is argued is the AD80’s as Luke’s knowledge of the great fall of Jerusalem as an event of the past is more apparent compared to Matthew and mark. Luke depended on marks gospel which...

...The Book Of Matthews Terrell Campbell Theology 210 Professor Lombardo April 29, 2015 The gospel according to Matthew is one of the four canonical gospels, one of the three synoptic gospels, and the first book of the New Testament. The book of Matthew basically tells how the Messiah, Jesus Christ, rejected by Israel, finally sends the disciples to preach his gospel to the world. It does not so much indicate a literary genre but characterizes the contents of the book: good news about Jesus Christ. The book of Matthew may be considered a Midrash theological interpretation on the gospel of Mark. Matthew, whose name means “gift of the Lord,” was a tax collector who left his work to follow Jesus (Matthew 9:9–13). In Mark and Luke he is called by his other name, Levi. Although the author did not record his name within the text itself, the first book found in the New Testament has historically been credited to the writing of Matthew, a tax collector and one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. Some New Testament scholars doubt the authorship of Matthew. The Gospel of Matthew, like all the other New Testament gospels, was originally anonymous and only attributed to Matthew, the disciple of Jesus, later in the second century. The author relied on Mark's Gospel for everything he knew about the life and mission of Jesus. There are two lines of evidence that proves the authorship of Matthew, the superscription of the ancient manuscripts and the patristic witness. According to...
