Theoretical Foundation for Nursing Roles and Practice
The nursing shortage is clearly a problem, and although the healthcare industry has acknowledged the shortage for decades now, the aging population has sealed the reality with an alarming force. Contributing factors include an aging population, along with its rapid increase of chronic diseases, and the limited capacity of nursing schools. As the population ages, the demand for healthcare services also escalates (Grant, 2016). The three million nurses in these United States contribute to the largest segment of the healthcare workforce, making nursing the fastest growing occupation.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has determined that there will be 1.2 million vacancies for registered nurses …show more content…
There are nurses who see the shortage as a financial opportunity since they can work as many hours as they like. However, it concerns older nurses who have to be aware of how the stress from their workload affects their bodies and have the added tasks of going behind coworkers to correct tasks. Older nurses are in unity that providing the best care requires being well rested. Efforts to combat the nursing shortage have helped with our hospitals offering flexible work hours, such as a four-hour shift, and bringing in agency nurses.
The nursing shortage is critical with no relief in sight. There have to be incentives for individuals to be drawn into the nursing profession with efforts deployed in staff retention. To achieve sustainability, there has to be more listening done by leaders to nursing needs.
Brief Summary of the Problem The nursing shortage has been publicized for what appear to be decades. The thought in the minds of all concerned is that it should have been resolved with the implementation of strategies when first identified. Registered nurses are close to the top of the list as regards job growth (ANA, 2017). One of the major concerns is that the latest reform in the healthcare industry has now allowed millions the access to the health care system. Due to the nursing shortage, we are inadequately prepared to meet the healthcare demands of a compromised population (ANA, …show more content…
The [components] that are essential to the nursing profession to get the job done with competence, includes skills, knowledge, years of experience in specific specialties which are incorporated in the care extended to these assigned patients (McGwen, 2011). Quality care, patient satisfaction, trust, comfort, which is expressed in the synergy model, is compromised when there is a nursing shortage. The nurse is not able to promote trust, foster patient satisfaction, or provide quality care when there are too many patients to be cared for.
