"There Is Nobody Like Jesus"
Hebrews 1:1-3

Introduction

1. H. G. Wells, the brilliant and noted historian, once listed the ten most famous and most important men of all of history, and he listed Jesus Christ as number one, now at first glance you might think that is marvelous. You might think that he did Jesus a favor.

2. Well I beg to differ, think it was an insult of the highest order. Because Jesus was not just a man among men, he was God among men. There is nobody like him. Never before was there one like him. Never since will there be one like him. Because there is nobody like Jesus.

3. Some anonymous author wrote this years ago: more than nineteen hundred years ago there was a man born contrary to laws of life. This man lived in poverty and was reared in obscurity ....only once did he cross the boundary of the country in which he lived; that was during his exile in childhood....in infancy he startled the king; in childhood he puzzled the doctors: in manhood he ruled the course of nature, walked upon the billows as if on pavement, and hushed the sea to sleep....he never wrote a book, and yet all of the libraries of the country could not hold the books that have been written about him....he never wrote a song, and yet he has furnished theme for more songs than all the songwriters combined.... He never founded a college, but all the schools put together cannot boast of having as many students.... Though time has spread many years between the people of this generation and the scene of his crucifixion, yet he still lives. Herod could not destroy him, and the grave could not hold him....he stands -forth upon the highest pinnacle of heavenly glory, proclaimed by God, acknowledged by angels, adored by saints, and feared by devils, as the living, personal Christ, our Lord, our savior and our God.

My World View Christianity

...another faith, or without faith) and politics. Both normally lead to frustrated feelings from both sides because one couldn’t convince the other to his view. Of course throughout class it is obvious I have a Christian world view, and it is difficult to comprehend those around me (in my culture) may not have the same world view. I believe the only way to Heaven is to be saved by professing Jesus as our Savior, and asking for forgiveness of our sins. We are spiritually born again into a new life with God and His teachings as our guide, and also for our reason to live. God renews our faith, cleanses us of our wickedness, and refreshes our soul. Then we are also baptized, a symbolic way of washing away our sins and through the grace and mercy of Jesus our slate is wiped clean. One aspect of Christianity that non-Christians can’t seem to understand is that clean slate may get a little soiled now and again. But when you have faith that Jesus has saved you and will forgive you, there’s a real comfort that is called hope. We aren’t perfect and we know it. If we had to be perfect I suspect Jesus would be lonely in Heaven! We would also have no hope of eternal life with him, and I can’t think of anything else that could be worse. One of the most chilling quotes is from Dante’s Inferno, “Abandon hope, all ye who enter here.” It is unfathomable for me to imagine a life without hope. Until the last few years, when we started having blogs and comments on articles from magazines...

Character Analysis- the Misfit

...This is a character analysis on the Misfit from “A Good Man is Hard to Find” (1953) by Flannery O’Connor. The story is about a family, including the grandmother, Bailey the father, the mother who is unnamed and their two kids named John Wesley and June Star, that is about to take a family vacation. The grandmother wants to go to Tennessee instead of Florida like the rest of the family. To try to convince them she tells them about a newspaper article about an escaped convict named the Misfit that is going towards Florida. Nobody pays her any mind and the next morning they are all in the car and on the road going from Atlanta to Florida. The grandmother convinces Bailey to take the kids to see an old plantation she once visited. As they are going down a winding dirt road to get there, the grandmother is so startled by the realization that the plantation is actually in Tennessee that she bumps the basket containing her cat which jumps out on to Bailey’s shoulder. They have a terrible accident but everyone is alright. Soon after the Misfit and his two lackeys come along. The family initially thinks they are going to help them until the grandmother recognizes the Misfit as the escaped convict. The Misfit talks with the grandmother while his lackeys take first, the son and father to the woods to kill them and then the mother, daughter and the baby. After a comment the grandmother makes, the Misfit shoots her three times in the chest in a boil of emotion which is quite striking from...

Christ, the Paradigm of Leadership

...that can steer us in the right direction? The answer is in Matthew 20. There are various ways people view or even approach leadership. Many people spend hours trying to find ways to be better leaders, always trying to find that “edge”. Many books are written about possessing certain qualities or characteristics, even applying certain principles to their way of leadership. Principles are not invented by us or society; they are the laws of the universe that pertain to human relationships and human organizations.” While some of these views can be good advice, it tends to shun the very model that we are supposed to follow in the first place. I will focus this paper on one main topic-Leadership; Leadership that is modeled by out Lord, Jesus Christ. Management paradigms in the business world change constantly. Christian organizations often print or even recommend books or some type of media that relates to these paradigms. Why do they feel the need to publish...

...of five children (Virginia, Anne, Ruth, Franklin, and Ned Graham) and also dedicated husband to Ruth Graham (Back bone of the Graham family). Billy Graham has raised his family in the mountains of North Carolina, a small town fifteen minutes from Asheville called Montreat, a small town fifteen minutes from Asheville (Graham 2). Most importantly, he is a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ. Billy Graham has given his life for the purpose of teaching the Word of God too many lost countries around the world. Since graduating from Wheaton College, his first major success was as a traveling evangelist for Youth for Christ (YFC), which was founded in 1941 (Eskridge 85). Graham was the star of the foundation from early 1945 through 1947, speaking at hundreds of rallies that taught teenage audiences the gospel of Jesus Christ (Eskridge 86). During his YFC days Graham found a way to reach the youth that reluctantly helped him in his years ahead: “We used every modern means to catch the attention of the unconverted—and then punched them right between the eyes with the gospel” (Martin 90-94). He used tactics like upbeat choruses, instrumental solos, and Bible trivia contests which were marvelous tools used to...

Ways in Which Steinbeck Makes Violence so Important in the Novel

...on people he met; Lennie’s character was based on a man who killed a ranch foreman and stabbed his boss in the stomach with a pitchfork.

One way Steinbeck portrays the importance of violence in the novel is through the way in which characters treat each other to determine status. When Curley is introduced in chapter two, he “glanced coldly” at George, his arms “gradually bent at the elbows” and his hands “closed into fists”. Curley “stiffened” and “went into a slight crouch” making Lennie “squirm” and “shift his feet nervously”. His actions foreshadow his malevolent intention to assault Lennie in chapter three in order to regain his status in the hierarchy. However, the direct opposite occurs when Curley was “flopping like a fish”, his fist “lost in Lennie’s paw”. Steinbeck uses animalistic imagery reflecting Curley’s loss of power and Lennie’s aggression which momentarily places him further up the hierarchy. Curley’s treatment of...

The Brutality Of Humans In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

...admit loneliness is something he is afraid of, like how all humans have that inner fear of being alone or dying alone. When that burden was gone, and George no longer had to fret about being held down, "George's voice was almost a whisper. He looked steadily at his right hand that held the gun" (107). The narrator is explaining how George now registers what Lennie really represented in his life. After losing grasp of the most important relationship of his life, he now realizes what it truly meant to him, like how humans never appreciate others in their lives, but only complain. Steinbeck has shown that how one might take the people who make our days great for granted, and how vital relationships are in our life. Another concept which drives our lives, and keeps us going is hope. It drives determination, happiness, and fulfillment in our lives, although it is another case where humans are not valuing it in their lives. Many characters are losing hope in this novel, and are giving up as they have no drive anymore. They are discerning what it meant in their lives while they had it. Candy is a prime example, as being an older worker, he has lost everything. When talking to George, upon the shooting of his dog he said, "'You seen what they done to my dog tonight? They says he wasn't no good to himself nor nobody else. When they can me here I wisht somebody'd shoot me"'(60). As stated before, hope actuates other forces in our lives, like happiness and the willingness to live. Candy...

Snow Storm Descriptive Writing

...Anyone who has ever lived in New York City knows there’s a lot of snow during the winter months. One winter we had a snow storm. I was lying in the bed with my sisters, warm and toasty. Out the window, I could see the wind blowing the snow across the field. It wasn’t enough snow to close the schools down. I could hear my Mother calling us to get up for school. Mom came into our bedroom and told us to get dress because the schools in New York were not closing today. Mom was getting ready for work. She was a nurse’s aide at a senior citizen facility. Before our Mom left for work, she told us not to cut across the field in front of our apartment building to get to school. “The snow is too deep. Go the long way around. Are you guys listening?” We all said...

The Pastoral Role

...Pastors are a gift to the church. Now, at the risk of making what reads like an arrogant assertion, we must consider what the Bible tells us, for we know from scripture that after His ascension, Jesus gave gifts to the church, and one of those gifts was pastor, “And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers” (Ephesians 4:11). This passage proceeds to shed some light on the purpose of these gifts, “For the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the status which belongs to the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12-13). This singular purpose, of equipping and building, produces an equally singular result – maturity in the life of the believer. There certainly are a number of other tasks and functions for the pastor to fulfill, but as I read these verses in Ephesians, the purpose of the pastor seems clear. Over my fifteen-plus years of fulltime, vocational ministry, I have seen some disturbing trends. I believe that ministry, pastoral ministry specifically, is a powerful and significant call, but I have seen many pastors fall into the trap of operating in an office outside of that which they have been called to. Sometimes this is based in a desire for notoriety, other times a desire for more money, or perhaps even because their intentions were good...

Notes from of Mice and Men

...IN STEINBECK'S OF MICE AND MEN A Sermon by Dean Scotty McLennan University Public Worship Stanford Memorial Church July 25, 2004 There are two different accounts in the New Testament of Jesus' disciples asking him how to pray. What has become known as the Lord's Prayer comes in two different forms, this one in today's gospel lesson from Lukei being shorter and less familiar than that in Matthew.ii They seem to stem from separate liturgical traditions in the early church. Matthew has seven petitions, while Luke has only five.iii But Luke alone follows the recitation of the Lord's Prayer with a fascinating parable about the potential limits of friendship in the middle of the night. The point of the parable seems to be that if one is persistent in asking something of a friend, even when it's very inconvenient, one's petitions will be answered. How much more will one be blessed, then, if one is persistent in praying to God, our heavenly Parent?iv John Steinbeck's short novel Of Mice and Men is all about friendship in the middle of the night -- that is, under very difficult circumstances of rural poverty during the Depression. Following my sermonic theme of the last couple of weeks -- not only loving God with all of one's heart, mind and soul but also loving one's neighbor as oneself -- I'd like to explore Steinbeck's understanding of friendship with you this morning. Ultimately, I hope it will illuminate what it means existentially to knock at the door and then have it opened unto...
